Construction of underground structure requires higher standard of planning and design specifications than in surface construction. However, high construction cost and difficult working environment limit design level and construction quality. One of the most sensitive factors to be considered are infiltration and external pore-water pressures. Development of pore-water pressure may accelerate leakage and cause deterioration of the lining. In this paper, the development of pore-water pressure and its potential effect on the linings are investigated using physical model tests. A simple physical equipment model with well-defined hydraulic boundary conditions was devised. The deterioration procedure was simulated by controlling both the permeability of filters and flowrate. Development of pore-water pressure was monitored on the lining using pore pressure measurement cells. Test results identified the mechanim of pore-water pressure development on the tunnel lining which is the effect of deterioration of drainage system. The laboratory tests were simulated using coupled numerical method, and shown that the deterioration mechanism can be reproduced using coupled numerical modelling method.
This paper was performed to investigate the effect of pore structure on ink residual behavior. To prepare different coating structures as substrates against inks, fine, medium and coarse calcium carbonate were used in the coating color. It is well known ink properties can affect to print qualities. After printing on the coated paper, ink layer can consider as third structure addition to paper and coating layer. To compare effect of ink properties on the surface structure and print qualities, several properties of ink were also adopted as raw material. Particle size of pigment effect on gloss evaluation of coated paper increased with calendering. It was shown that ink transfer rate increased as surface of the sample was smooth. The ink contained low viscosity resin evaluated more print gloss. Finer pigment particle size, smaller pore size and higher porosity. Pore volume of coated paper was slightly decreased with printing as the coating was prepared with the finest particle size. However, it founded that ink resin could not affect on pore volume and distribution of printed paper
Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide(RBSC) has been used for engineering ceramics due to low-temperature fabrication and near-net shape products with excellent structural properties such as thermal shock resistance, corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Recently, attempts have been made to develop hot gas filter with gradient pore structure by RBSC to overcome weakness of commercial clay-bonded SiC filter such as low fracture toughness and low reliability. In this study a fabrication process of porous RBSC with multi-layer pore structure with gradient pore size was developed. The support layer of the RBSC with multi-layer pore structure was fabricated by conventional Si infiltration process. The intermediate and filter layers consisted of phenolic resin and fine SiC powder were prepared by dip-coating of the support RBSC in slurry of SiC and phenol resin. The temperature of $1550^{\circ}C$ to make Si left in RBSC support layer infiltrate into dip-coated layer to produce SiC by reacting with pyro-carbon from phenol resin.
Titanium alloy is gaining attention in the medical industry due to its excellent biocompatibility and osteoconductivity. However, the natural oxide film on the titanium surface is insoluble, resulting in inadequate bone adhesion. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the contact between biological tissues and implant surfaces, and alter the chemical composition and morphological characteristics of the implant surface. In this study, the anodization method was applied to titanium surface treatment to form a uniform and robust oxide film. Subsequently, a chemical process, pore-widening, was employed to change the morphological characteristics of the oxide film. The concentration of the pore-widening solution was varied at 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt% and the process time was set at 30 and 60 minutes. As the concentration of the pore-widening solution increased the pore diameter of the oxide film increased. Notably, at 6 wt% for 60 minutes, the oxide film exhibited a coexistence of pillars and pores. Based on this, it was determined that surface roughness increased with higher concentration and longer process time. Additionally, the presence of pillars and pores structures maximized hydrophilicity. This study provides insights into enhancing the surface properties of titanium for improved performance in medical implants.
Activated carbons were prepared from Youngwall coal by steam activation in this study. The feasibility of the Youngwall coal to commercial activated carbon was examined. The variation of pore structures and the development of porosity in activated carbons were investigated by changing activation conditions in batch type apparatus. The values of BET surface area and adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue of the resulting activated carbons were obtained as high as 1,000$m^2$m^2$$/g, 900mg/g, 150$m\ell$/g, respectively. Youngwall activated carbon prepared in this study showed much higher pore volume in pore diameter over 10 than that of commercial reference activated carbon(Ningxia Taihua ZJ-15C) produced from China anthracite.
A low water/cement ratio leads to autogenous shrinkage of cement paste at an early age. This autogenous shrinkage is related to the change of relative humidity in the pore structure that is formed during the hydration process. The relationship between autogenous shrinkage and relative humidity change are relatively well defined today, but the effects of temperature on autogenous shrinkage, relative humidity, and pore structures have been studied less systematically. This study focused on correlating alterations of these properties of cement paste hydrated at constant temperatures of 20, 40, and $60^{\circ}C$. The test results clearly indicate that increasing curing temperature resulted in increased porosity, particularly for pores between 5 to 50 nm as measured by MIP, and increased autogenous shrinkages, as a consequence of a reduction of relative humidity at early ages.
Recently, many researches on the dissipation of excess pore pressure in liquefied sand grounds have been performed to evaluate post-liquefaction behaviors of structures. In this paper. centrifuge tests were performed to simulate liquefaction behaviors of prototype soil. The evaluation model of solidified layer thickness was developed to simulate non-linear variation of solidified layer thickness with time. Also, the dissipation of excess pore pressure in liquefied sand was evaluated by applying the solidification theory and the consolidation theory. The developed model gives a good estimation of the solidified layer thickness and the time history of excess pore pressure.
The high alkaline property in the concrete pore solution protects the embedded steel in concrete from corrosion due to aggressive ions attack. However, a continuous supply of those ions, in particular, chlorides altogether with a pH fall in electrochemical reaction on the steel surface eventually depassivate the steel to corrode. To mitigate chloride-induced corrosion in concrete structures, finely grained mineral admixtures, for example, pulverized fuel ash (PFA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and silica fume (SF) have been often advised to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) partially as binder. A consistent assessment of those partial replacements has been rarely performed with respect to the resistance of each binder to corrosion, although the studies for each binder were extensively looked into in a way of measuring the corrosion rate, influence of microstructure or chemistry of chlorides ions with cement hydrations. The paper studies the behavior of steel corrosion, chloride transport, pore structure and buffering capacity of those cementitious binders. The corrosion rate of steel in mortars of OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS and 10% SF respectively, with chloride in cast ranging from 0.0 to 3.0% by weight of binder was measured at 7, 28 and 150 days to determine the chloride threshold level and the rate of corrosion propagation, using the anodic polarization technique. Mercury intrusion porosimetry was also applied to cement pastes of each binder at 7 and 28 days to ensure the development of pore structure. Finally, the release rate of bound chlorides (i.e. buffering capacity) was measured at 150 days. The chloride threshold level was determined assuming that the corrosion rate is beyond 1-2 mA/$m^3$ at corrosion and the order of the level was OPC > 10% SF > 60% GGBS > 30% PFA. Mercury intrusion porosimetry showed that 10% SF paste produced the most dense pore structure, followed by 60% GGBS, 30% PFA and OPC pastes, respectively. It was found that OPC itself is beneficial in resisting to corrosion initiation, but use of pozzolanic materials as binders shows more resistance to chloride transport into concrete, thus delay the onset of corrosion.
Earthquake preparedness has become more important with recent increase in the number of earthquakes in Korea, but many existing structures are not prepared for earthquakes. There are various types of liquefaction prevention method that can be applied, such as compaction, replacement, dewatering, and inhibition of shear strain. However, most of the liquefaction prevention methods are applied before construction, and it is important to find optimal methods that can be applied to existing structures and that have few effects on the environment, such as noise, vibration, and changes in underground water level. The purpose of this study is to estimate the correlation between the displacement of a structure and variations of pore water pressure on the ground in accordance with the depth of the sheet file when liquidation occurs. To achieve this, a shaking table test was performed for Joo-Mun-Jin standard sand and an earth pressure, accelerometer, pore water pressure transducer, and LVDT were installed in both the non-liquefiable layer and the liquefiable layer to measure the subsidence and excess pore water pressure in accordance with the time of each embedded depth. Then the results were analyzed. A comparison of the pore water pressure in accordance with Hsp/Hsl was shown to prevent lateral water flow at 1, 0.85 and confirmed that the pore water pressure increased. In addition, the relationship between Hsp/Hsl and subsidence was expressed as a trend line to calculate the expected settlement rate formula for the embedded depth ratio.
