The experiment was carried out to fabricate alumina membrane which has a cylindrical pore structure by anodizing aluminium plate in sulfuric acid solution with the electrochemical technique. The aluminium plate for anodizing was prepared by the pretreatment process such as chemical, electro-polishing and thermal treatment. The pore size distribution and the film thickness of alumina membrane were investigated by the implementation of scanning electron microscope(SEM) and BET method. The results show that the oxide film has a geometrical structures like a Keller model and that the membrane has a uniform pore distribution. The pore size and the oxide film thickness are dependent on the anodizing process variables such as the electrolyte concentration, the reation temperature and the anodizing current density.
In this study, a novel-processing route for producing microcellular zirconia ceramics has been developed. The proposed strategy for making the microcellular zirconia ceramics involves hollow microsphere as a pore former which has extremely low density of $0.025\;g/cm^3$. Effects of hollow microsphere content and sintering temperature on microstructure, porosity, pore distribution, and compressive strength were investigated in the processing of microcellular zirconia ceramics. By controlling the content of hollow microsphere, it was possible to make the porous zirconia ceramics with porosities ranging from 45% to 75%. Typical compressive strength value of microcellular zirconia ceramics with ${\sim}65%$ porosity was over 50 MPa. By adjusting the mixing ratio of large and small zirconia powders, it was possible to control the pore structure from close to open pores.

In this study, alginate-gelatin/silk wet-laid nonwoven fabrics were prepared by using alginate gelatin fiber and silk fiber, as the main fiber, and PVA fiber as binder fiber. The characterization of pore size and mechanical property was carried out on the various weight ratios of alginate gelatin fiber and silk fibers, or the adding binder fibers. As the content of silk or binder fiber increases, the tensile strength increases from 0.70 kgf/㎠ to 5.08 kgf/㎠ and the pore size decreases 111.6 ㎛ to 51.00 ㎛. As the weight of the silk increased, the density increased, and binder fiber was added to enhance the cohesion between fibers, thereby increasing the wet-laid nonwoven fabric strength. We studied on wet-laid nonwoven fabrics that can be applied to mask sheet with adjustable pore size.
Sediment microcosm experiments were conducted for 14 and 28 days using Zn spiked sediment to examine the changing distribution of bioavailab1e sediment-bound Zn at different SEM (simultaneously extracted metal)-Zn/ AVS (acid volatile sulfide) mole ratios as a function of time and amphipod density. In surficial sediments (0-1cm), AVS concentrations significantly decreased due to bioturbation and oxidation, while SEM-Zn concentrations remained unchanged. As a result, SEM-Zn/AVS ratios in the surface sediment were greater one although the ratios were designed as less than one initially. With increasing SEM-Zn/AVS ratios in surficial sediments, concentrations of potentially bioavailable $MgCl_2$extractable-Zn, NaOAc extractable-Zn and pore water-Zn significantly increased, while concentrations of SEM-Zn were not significantly varied. Results suggested that as AVS concentrations decreased, AVS bound Zn was partitioned to other sediment fractions (i.e. $MgCl_2$ and NaOAc extractable) and the pore water, resulting in changes in Zn bioavailability in surficial sediments. Concentrations of AVS, SEM-Zn and pore water-Zn remained unchanged in the deeper layers (>1 cm) of the sediment.
The three-dimensional particle packing process is simulated using Lahey FORTRAN 90 as a programming language running on a personal computer. Particle clusters constructed with rearrangement which occurs during packing have higher average coordination number and packing density than particle clusters rearranged after packing. Rearranging particles can not completely block other particles from entering pore volume in 3-dimensional packing unlike in 2-dimensional packing. It is found that there is a region of instability where lower packing density results from the destruction of the ordered packing.

The laboratory tests were peformed to investigate the relationship between electrical resistivity and the unsaturated subsurface condition and to evaluate the contamination due to leachate based on measuring electrical resistivity. For weathered granite soil, the electrical resistivity of soil decreases as moisture density increases. The electrical resistivity of soil decreases as the concentration of leachate in pore fluid increases since leachate contains various ionic constituents. And the modified Archie's equation for applying to unsaturated sand is derived by regression analysis.

The conventional approach to evaluate the contaminant transport in soils adopts the macro-scale implementation while the pore configuration and network is a dominant factor to determine the fate of contaminant. However, the observation of fate and transport at pore scale may not be readily approachable because of the computational expenses to solve Navier-Stokes equation. We herein present the 2D Lattice-Boltzmann method that enables to assess the local fluid velocity and density efficiently for the case of single phase and multi-components. The solute fate spatio-temperal space is explicitly determined by the advection of fluid flow. Two different types of idealized pore space provides the path of fluid. Also, solute transport, the velocity field and average concentration of solute are computed in steady state. Results show that the pore geometry such as tortuosity mainly affect the solute fate. It highlights the significance of the pore configuration and shape in granular soils and rock discontinuity in spite of the equivalent porosity.
Porous metals demonstrate not only excessively low densities, but also novel physical, thermal, mechanical, electrical, and acoustic properties. Thus, porous metals exhibit exceptional performance, which are useful for diesel particulate filters, heat exchangers, and noise absorbers. In this study, SUS316L foam with 90% porosity and $3,000{\mu}m$ pore size is successfully manufactured using the electrostatic powder coating (ESPC) process. The mean size of SUS316L powders is approximately $12.33{\mu}m$. The pore properties are evaluated using SEM and Archimedes. As the quantity of powder coating increases, pore size decreases from 2,881 to $1,356{\mu}m$. Moreover, the strut thickness and apparent density increase from 423.7 to $898.3{\mu}m$ and from 0.278 to $0.840g/cm^3$, respectively. It demonstrates that pore properties of SUS316L powder porous metal are controllable by template type and quantity of powder coating.
Human influence on soil formation has dramatically increased with human civilization and industry development. Increase of anthropogenic soils induced researches on the anthropogenic soils; classification, chemical and physical characteristics of anthropogenic soils and plant growth from anthropogenic soils. However there have been no comprehensive analyses on soil pore or physical properties of anthropogenic soils from 3 dimensional images in Korea. The objectives of this study were to characterize physical properties of anthropogenic paddy field soils by depth and to find differences between natural and anthropogenic paddy field soils. Soil samples were taken from two anthropogenic and natural paddy field soils; anthropogenic (A_c) and natural (N_c) paddy soils with topsoil of coarse texture and anthropogenic (A_f) and natural (N_f) paddy soils with topsoil of fine texture. The anthropogenic paddy fields were reestablished during the Arable Land Remodeling Project from 2011 to 2012 and continued rice farming after the project. Natural paddy fields had no artificial changes or disturbance in soil layers up to 1m depth. Samples were taken at three different depths and analyzed for routine physical properties (texture, bulk density, etc.) and pore properties with computer tomography (CT) scans. The CT scan provided 3 dimensional images at resolution of 0.01 mm to calculate pore radius size, length, and tortuosity of soil pores. Fractal and configuration entropy analyses were applied to quantify pore structure and analyze spatial distribution of pores within soil images. The results of measured physical properties showed no clear trend or significant differences across depths or sites from all samples, except the properties from topsoils. The results of pore morphology and spatial distribution analyses provided detailed information of pores affected by human influences. Pore length and size showed significant decrease in anthropogenic soils. Especially, pores of A_c had great decrease in length compared to N_c. Fractal and entropy analyses showed clear changes of pore distributions across sites. The topsoil layer of A_c showed more degradation of pore structure than that of N_c, while pores of A_f topsoil did not show significant degradation compared with those of N_f. These results concluded that anthropogenic soils with coarse texture may have more effects on pore properties than ones with fine texture. The reestablished paddy fields may need more fundamental remediation to improve physical conditions.
We studied a low density 8CB liquid crystal-hydrophobic aerosil dispersions imbedded in submicron-size cylindrical pores. The nanosize spherical aerosil particles are adsorbed at the pore wall and hinder the planar anchoring. The adsorption is temperature dependent, and an axial to radial molecular configuration transition occurs within the cylindrical pores.
