The results of the determination of the optimum level of nitrogen fertilizer experiment for rice paddy at 21 locations over the country in 1975 year are as follows. 1. The yields of control and N-fertilized plots of ordinary variety (Japonica type) were normal paddy soil>sandy paddy soil>poorly drained paddy soil. Control plots of Tongil variety, (Indica type) however, were sandy poorly drained soil>sandy normal paddy soil=clay poorly drained soil, and N-fertilized plots were normal paddy soil>sandy poorly drained soil>sandy soil>clay poorly drained soil. In other words Tongil variety has higher adaptability to sandy soil under no nitrogen. 2. The yield response to N-fertilizer was higher in normal paddy soil than sandy soil. The productivity per 1kg of nitrogen was 16.6kg in normal paddy soil, 10.5 in sandy soil, and 8.6-11.4 in poorly drained soil for Tongil variety. For ordinary variety, they were 12.6, 6.3, 6.6-9.3kg respectively. 3. Ripening ratio for ordinary variety and ripening ratio and grain weight for Togil variety were higher in sandy soil than normal paddy soil. The main reason why the N-response in mormal paddy soil is higher was appeared to be higher number of effective tillers in normal paddy soil. 4. The optimum rates of N-fertilizer in average were 19.4 in normal paddy soil, 14.6 in sandy soil, and 11.6-13.4kg/10a in poorly drained soil for Tongil variety. For ordinary variety they were 15.9, 10.2, and 8.7-12.7kg/10a respectively. 5. The optimum rate of nitrogen was increased with the increase of productivity in normal paddy soils. In sandy soils and poorly drained soils it was not proved. 6. The optimum rates of N-fertilizer calculated from field experiment were somewhat different from the optimum rates calculated from $SiO_2/OM$ ratio. However, the values calculated both ways showed high correlation. It would be recommendable, therefore, to use $SiO_2/OM$ ratio to calculate the optimum rates of N-fertilizer after revising this equation considering different rice varieties and soil types or water management and climate.
Poorly drained coarse textured paddy soils has harmful substances(e.g. $Fe^{2+}$, $H_2S$, organic acid etc.) due to reduction condition, and lower soil temperature during early stage of rice crop. The roots of the rice plant usually were distributed in the surface layer, and prone to lodged. To solve the problems, the study was carried out in the typical poorly drained, sandy loam textured paddy soils during 1997-1998. Coated urea and urea fertilizers were applied on the surface and whole layer mixed respectively. Yield of the surface fertilization of coated urea had increasing tendency but not significant. Advantages of this experiment was saving of about 30% of nitrogen fertilizer and top dressing labour, which would reduce possibility of water pollution.
An attempt to determine the optimum levels of P and K fertilizers application for Tong-il lines (indica${\times}$Japonica) was made with the data obtained from the farm fields during 1976 to 1979. The detailed interpretation to obtains relationships between fertilizer recommendation of P and K with their balance with Ca and Mg contents in soil were made using yield data obtained in 1977. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The optimum rates of P and K fertilizer application varied with the kinds of paddy soils showing the ranges of 6.6-11.4 kg/10a for P (as $P_2O_5$) and 7.0-11.3 kg/10a for K (as $K_2O$). The amounts of optimum fertilizers increased in the order of unmatured soil, normal soil, sandy soil, saline soil, poorly drained soil for P, and unmatured soil, poorly drained soil, sandy soil, normal soil, saline soil for K. 2. The yield increment at the optimum levels of P and K in comparison with no fertilizer application were 3,5-7.5% for P and 2.1-9.1% for K. The effectiveness of P was greatest in the unmatured soils and that of K was greatest in the poorly drained soils, and in the saline soil, that of P and K was relatively high. 3. According to relationship between relative yield index and soil testing value, the critical $P_2O_5$ contents which showed the yield response in soil were about 100 ppm for normal soil and 200ppm for sandy soil. That of exchangeable K/Ka+Mg ratio in soil were about 0.08 for normal paddy soil and over 0.08 for sandy soil, and those for poorly drained soils were not obtained in the ranged below 0.08. 4. The regression equations of fertilizer recommendation for different soils were obtained between the available $P_2O_5$ in soil or ratio of K to base including Ca and Mg in soil (x) and the amount (Y) of P and K fertilizers applied. The equations for phosphorus recommendation were Y=11.27C-0.048x for normal paddy soil and Y=13.383-0.061x for sandy soil, and those for potassium recommendation were Y=9.526-0.569x for normal paddy soil, Y=11.727-1.004x for sandy soil, and Y=12.574-0.558x for poorly drained soil, respectively.
This study was conducted to develop rational soil management and enhance the productivity of lands converted from paddy soils. Specifically, the changes in the soil physical properties brought about by the change in land usage from paddy soil were evaluated. This was carried out from 1999 to 2001 at 50 site in large-scale converted paddy fields of Kimcheon, Youngcheon, Gyeongsan and Milyang in the Youngnam region, categorized according to soil texture and drainage class. The ridge height of converted paddy soils was higher in coarse-textured and poorly-drained soils than in fine-textured and well-drained soils. The gray color of the surface soil was of lesser degree in converted soils than paddy soils and more notable in welldrained soils. The porosity ratio and the formation of aggregate structure were higher, and the appearance of soil mottling was deeper in converted paddy fields than in paddy soils. The glaying layer "g" of surface soil degraded with time. The porosity and amount of water stable aggregate was found to increase with time after conversion. The penetration resistance of the converted paddy soil was lower and deeper with time after conversion. The soil aeration of the converted paddy soil was lower in sandy loam than in loamy soil. Furthermore, soil aeration was influenced by ridge height and drainage class in poorly-drained soils.
The limiting factors to determine available soil depth were studied with 390 soil series in soil profile description and physicochemical data in Korean soils. The limiting factors were coarse sandy layer, gravel and skeletal layer, hardpan layer, cat clay layer, poorly drained layer, salt accumulated layer and bed rock layer so on. The soils of having limiting factors were 332 soil series, but soils without limiting factors were 58 soil series. Soils with limiting factors were, hardpan 5, slopeness 93, immature soil 29, cinder 5, sandy 42, gravel or skeletal 47, bedrock 19, high salt content 8, poorly drained soil 22, heavy clay 32, sulfate soil 3 and ash soil 27 etc. And the orders of available soil depth were immature > slopeness > ash > heavy clay > sandy > gravel or skeletal > hardpan > cindery > poorly drained > bedrock > acid sulfate soil > salt accumulated soil etc.
To establish a suitability grouping system of paddy soils for double or multiple cropping with rice which is intensively practiced in the southern parts of Korea, a few basic experiments were carried out for two years. The results are summarized as follows; 1. The potential productivities of the paddy soils which were tested without any fertilizer in the pots of subsoil samples by the double cropping of rice and other upland crops were resulted that the soils of "Moderately well drained" fine silty textured were the highest while the soils of "Poorly drained" sandy were the lowest, and the productivities could be clearly comparable according to the differences of soil conditions. 2. The decomposability of organic matter also was higher in the soils of "Moderately well drained" than the "Imperfectly drained". The coarse loamy and coarse silty textured soils were high in the upland condition and in the early stages of submerging while the fine loamy and fine silty textured soils were high at the late stage of submerging in the rates of organic matter decomposition. 3. The days to be reached to tillable condition after rainfall in fine loamy textured soils were about 5 days earlier than the clayey soils. The period of tillable condition of fine clayey soils with "Moderately well drained" was the longest and that of the fine loamy textured soils was the shortest. But the soils with "Imperfectly drained" were not clear among soil textural classes. 4. The lower the ground water table the higher was the productivity indices. The variation of ground water table in the medium textured soils was higher than the both of coarse and fine textured soils among "Moderately well drained". But it was observed the opposite in the soils of "Imperfectly drained".
This study was carried out to obtain the effects of soil environment and characteristics on the growth and yield of young rice seedling. Twenty four rice fields were selected among the labor saving mechanization complex, and the growth statu s and various soil characteristics were investigated The young rice seedling planted soils were located at the range of elevation 5m to 210m, and the average water holding days was 5.1 days, and drainage class were mainly moderately well to imperfectly. The plant height on 30th day after machine transplanting were higher and the tiller numbers were smaller at the higher clay contents at moderately well and imperfectly drained soils. In case of sandy loam soils, the better the drainage class, the higher plant and more tillers. Soil hardness was lower in sandy loam, and the bulk densities of loam, silty clay loam and poorly drained soils were lower than the other fields. There were not differences of soil chemical properties between the soil textural groups but organic matter content were higher in poorly drained soils. The rice yields of young seedling planted fields were negatively correlated to soil bulk density and highly significantly correlated to the exchangeable calcium contents of the soils. The average yield of young rice seedlings was 487kg/10a, 2.5% higher than semi-adult rice seedling of 475kg/10a.
Six study sites in Gumi, Goryeong in Gyeongbuk province and Naju in Jeonnam province were selected to investigate soil properties of poorly drained horizons in paddy soils. The horizons were re-established layers which were parent material layers originated from fluvial deposits. Topsoil layers were differentiated from piled parent materials while soil structure of the topsoil layer was massive with striated microstructure. Compaction at soil re-establishment and a lack of structure and aggregate development in these soils may cause the limitation of vertical water movement and result in poorly drained horizons. Soil samples were taken from paddy fields with top soils of sandy loam, silt loam and silty clay loam and re-established soils of coarse and fine texture. The samples were taken from each horizon for the analyses of soil chemical and mineral properties. Soils with re-established soils of coarse texture had greater amounts of sands from top soil texture distributions, while soils with fine texture had greater amounts of silts. Chemical properties of top soils were analyzed from rice cultivated soils at the time of re-establishments and one year after the re-establishments. The coarse texture of the re-established horizons decreased in EC values from 0.23 to $0.11(dS\;m^{-1})$, available phosphate values from 112 to $54(mg\;kg^{-1})$, and exchangeable Ca values from 6.6 to $4.9(cmol_c\;kg^{-1})$. On the other hand, soils with fine texture showed decrease only in pH and exchangeable Ca values. Especially, organic matter and available phosphate contents showed heterogeneous distributions from each horizon. This result may be caused by mixture of plough layer and subsurface layer during and consolidation. Hydraulic conductivity values were low at the boundaries of top soil and parent material layers except SL/coarse soil. Soil microstructure was massive structure without soil clods or pores and showed striated structure. Therefore, re-established paddy fields with fluvial deposits as parent material layers showed limited vertical movements of soil water because of occurrence of compacted layers and less-development of soil clods and aggregates.
The suitable paddy soil for application of rice straw under well to moderately well drained soil, the yield and yield components were pronounced more than poorly drained soil. Based on laboratory experiment, application of rice straw promoted the decrease of oxidation-reduction potential in well to moderately well drained soil. This results seems to be enhanced the release of some mineral nutrients such as calcium, potassium, silicon, and increases of availability of soil phosphorus. This explains reason why soil condition became more favorable for the increases of mineral nutrient in rice plant. On the contrary, poorly drained soils, became readily reduced even without application or rice straw, when soil wat submerged. Application of rice straw did not promoted the decrease of oxidation-reduction potential as much as in well drained soil. It was suggested that in this type of soil series, the release of mineral nutrients and the additional increase of available soil phosphorus did not proceed well. It was also suggested that the retardation of root development owing to accumulation of toxic substances such as organic acid, hydrogen sulfide or some other reducing substances formed by the application of rice straw in poorly drained soil series might be considered. In fact, the effect of rice straw on the yield of brown rice became lower.
With a purpose to obtain basic informaton for improving poorly drained soil, a pot experiment was conducted about the effect of percolation rate on growth and yield of rice under application of wollastonite and rice straw as soil conditioner. The sandy and clayey soils were selected to compare difference in effectiveness of poor drainage. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Increasing or percolation rate increased rice yield in both sandy and clayey soils, but the effectiveness on yield increase was greater in clayey soil than in sandy. 2. Various materials of soil solution produced from the process of soil reduction were high at the early growing stage, but they were gradually decreased at the later growing stage. 3. With increasing percolation rate, the contents of N, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ in rice plant were decreased, but that of $SiO_2$ was increased. 4. The number of roots at harvest was greater with increased extension as infiltration rate was increased.
