  • This study assesses groundwater vulnerability to contaminants in 12 administrative districts of the city of Changwon, using DRASTIC technique. DRASTIC was originally applied to situations in which the contamination sources are at the ground surface, and the contaminants flow into the groundwater with infiltration of rainfall. However, groundwater contamination in urban areas can also be related to excessive pumping resulting in a lowering of the water level. The correlation coefficient between minimum DRASTIC indices and the degree of poor water quality for 10 districts is low as 0.40. The correlation coefficients between minimum DRASTIC indices and the groundwater discharge rate, and between minimum DRASTIC indices and well density per unit area are 0.70 and 0.87, respectively. Thus, to evaluate the potential of groundwater contamination in urban areas, it is necessary to consider other factors such as groundwater withdrawal rate and well density per unit area with ratings and weights as well as the existing six DRASTIC factors.

  • In this paper, a new neural networks and neural network based sliding mode controller are proposed. The new neural networks are an mor self-recurrent neural networks which use a recursive least squares method for the fast on-line leammg. The error self-recurrent neural networks converge considerably last than the back-prollagation algorithm and have advantage oi bemg less affected by the poor initial weights and learning rate. The controller for suspension system is designed according to sliding mode technique based on new proposed neural networks. In order to adapt shding mode control mnethod, each frame dstance hetween ground and vehcle body is estimated md controller is designed according to estimated neural model. The neural networks based sliding mode controller approves good peiformance throllgh computer sirnulations.

  • In order to analysis the reason of sliding failure in embankment slope under construction in soft soil area, a model section located in Gimhae Region in Gyeongsangnam-Do, where the sliding failure had been occurred during embankment works in soft soil area, had been selected. This area had been firstly treated with the Pack Drain Method, and additional embankment works of 9.7 meters out of total 14 meters in thickness had been under construction. The results of analysis showed that the reason of sliding failure were overspeed in embankment construction and the overestimation of design factors in calculating strength of each layer of embankment and poor management and inaccuracy reading of measurement devices.

  • Being contacted directly with. ground, the tire tread part is in shape of complex patterns of variable ASDs(anti-skid depth) to satisfy various tire performances. However, owing to the painstaking mesh generation job and the extremely long CPU-time, conventional 3-D tire analyses have been performed by either neglecting tread pattern or modeling circumferential grooves only. As a result, such simplified analysis models lead to considerably poor numerical expectations. This paper addresses the development of a 3-D tire mesh generation considering the detailed tread pattern and shows that the contact pressure and frictional energy distribution of tires considering the detailed pattern become better than those by the simplified tire model.

  • In this study, Matsuda's formula, which has been used to evaluate the acting load on the concrete pillar in 2-Arch tunnels, is investigated and a load reduction factor $({\alpha})$, which has been estimated from numerical parametric studies, is proposed for a better design of 2-Arch tunnels in the future. Numerical parametric studies show that the concrete pillar is subjected to a stress concentration on the excavation side during the first tunnel driving and when tunnel excavation is completed, the induced stress on the pillar in a poor quality of ground condition is 1.5 to 1.8 times the stress developed during the first tunnel driving. In addition, the numerical studies indicate that the acting load on the pillar is in the range of $14{\sim}83%$ of the load estimated by Matsuda's formula. From these results, a load reduction factor $({\alpha})$ is determined and it would make 2-Arch tunnel design more economically.

  • Using SOHO particle and EUV detection and radio spectrograms from both ground-based and spaceborne instruments, we have studied the first phase of major solar energetic particle (SEP) events associated with wide and fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) centered at different solar longitudes. Observations support the idea that acceleration of SEPs starts in the helium-rich plasma of the eruption's core well behind the CME leading edge, in association with coronal shocks and magnetic reconnection caused by the CME liftoff; and those "coronal" components dominate during the first ~1.5 hour of the SEP event, not yet being hidden by the CME-bow shock in solar wind. At magnetic connection to the eruption's periphery, onset of SEP emission is delayed for a time of the lateral expansion that is visualized by global coronal (EIT) wave. The first, "coronal" phase of SEP acceleration is followed by a second phase associated with CME-driven shock wave in solar wind, which accelerates high-energy ions from a helium-poor particle population until the interplanetary shock slows down to below 1000 km/s. Based on these and other SOHO observations, we discuss what findings can be expected from STEREO in the SOHO era perspective.

  • A concrete lining of NATM tunnel is the final product of a process that involves planning and evaluation of user needs, geotechnical investigations, analysis of ground-lining interaction, construction, and observations and modifications during construction. The designer must consider the lining in context of the many function, construction, and geotechnical requirements. Also, the loss of supporting capacity of shotcrete lining due to poor rock qualities and shotcrete erosion must be considered. The values, shapes, and estimating methods of rock load and water pressure are very different with every designers. Estimating methods of rock loads used in the design of NATM tunnel concrete lining are investigated. Numerical analyses are done in various conditions. And the rock loads estimated from radial stress and plastic zone are compared respectively.

  • This studies were conducted to investigate on the shade adaptation of native Sedum kamchaticum and Disporum smilacinum. All plants were grow under the controlled light intensity conditions, which controlled by two shading materials, white and/or black shading net. The results obtained were as follow. 1. Daily changes of the shading area around of the building were various by building height, width and direction. 2. Upper canopy was composed to Pinus densiflora as dominant species in native sites of Disporum species. 3. Many branches of Disporum smilacinum were sprouted after pinching. However their growth were less elongated shorter than those of Disporum viridescens. 4. Sedum sarmentosum was poor growth under the low relative light intensity as 50%, however, the growth of this species closely was similiar as under the full sun condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic response characteristics of Wolsong nuclear power plant (NPP) structures for the Kyeongju earthquake(ML=4.3) occurred on June 26, 1997. The seismograms are obtained from five accelerographs of nuclear power plant at Wolsong, Kyeongbuk. The distance from the epicenter is about 25km. The peak acceleration (PA) due to the earthquake is 0.0235g, which is far lower value than that of design basis earthquake(DBE). The PA at the containment wall is about twice as large as that at free field. Also, the higher the accelerograph is located in, the larger the PA is measured to be From the response spectrum analysis, the dominant frequency of the response is close to 4 Hz, which is similar to the free field is poor because of contamination by high frequency waves as a result of reflection and diffraction between ground and NPP structure. We are of opinion that the accelerograph at the free field should be moved approximately twice the building dimension away from the containment structure.

  • Image binarization using a global threshold value [3] performs at high speed, but usually results in undesired binary images when the source images are of poor quality. In such cases, adaptive local thresholding algorithms [1][2][3] are used to obtain better results, and the algorithm proposed by A.E.Savekis which chooses local threshold using foreground and background clustering [1] is one of the best thresholding algorithms. However, this algorithm runs slowly due to its re-computing threshold value of each central pixel in a local window MxM. In this paper, we present a dynamic programming approach for the step of calculating local threshold value that reduces many redundant computations and improves the execution speed significantly. Experiments show that our proposal improvement runs more ten times faster than the original algorithm.
