  • Nondestructive damage sensitivity on single-basalt fiber/epoxy composites was evaluated by micromechanical technique and acoustic emission (AE). Piezoelectric lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer were used as AE sensor, respectively. In single-fiber composite, the damage sensing with different sensor types were compared to each other. Piezoelectric PVDF polymer sensor was embedded in and attached on the composite, whereas PZT sensor was only attached on the surface of specimen. In case of embedded polymer sensors, responding sensitivity was higher than that of the attached case. It can be due to full constraint inside specimen to transfer elastic wave coming from micro-deformation. For both the attached and the embedded cases, the sensitivity of P(VDF-TrFE) sensor was almost same as that of conventional PVDF sensor.

  • In this study, hydrophobically modified fumed silica was added to the PVDF coating to improve corrosion protection performance. Two types of silane modifiers, trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) and hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ), were used for hydrophobic modification of the fumed silica. The composition of modified fumed silica was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The dispersion of modified fumed silica in the PVDF coating was observed by the transmission electron microscopy, and the hydrophobicity of PVDF coating was analyzed by the water contact angle. Surface properties were examined by the field emission scanning electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy. Potentiodynamic polarization was conducted to confirm corrosion protection performance of PVDF coating in terms of hydrophobically-modified fumed silica contents. As a result, the average surface roughness and the water contact angle of the PVDF coating increased with modifier contents. The results of the potentiodynamic polarization test showed an increase of the Ecorr values with increase of the hydrophobicity of PVDF coating. Thus, it clearly indicates that the corrosion protection performance of PVDF coating improved with the addition of the hydrophobic-modified fumed silica that prevents the penetration of moisture into the PVDF coating.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membrane is widely used for water treatment. However, the weak mechanical strength of PVDF limits its application. To enhance its tensile strength, a double-layer composite hollow fiber membrane, with PVDF and polyetherimide as the external and inner layers, respectively, was successfully prepared through phase inversion technique. The effects of additive content, air gap distance, N,N-dimethyl-acetamide content in the inner core liquid, and the temperature of external coagulation bath on the membrane structure, permeation flux, rejection, tensile strength, and porosity were determined. Experimental results showed that the optimum preparation conditions for the double-layer composite hollow fiber membrane were as follows: PEG-400 and PEG-600, 5 wt%; air gap distance, 10 cm; inner core liquid and the external coagulation bath should be water; and temperature of the external coagulation bath, 40 C. A single layer PVDF hollow fiber membrane (without PEI layer) was also prepared under optimum conditions. The double-layer composite membrane remarkably improved the tensile strength compared with the single-layer PVDF hollow fiber membrane. The permeation flux, rejection, and porosity were also slightly enhanced. High-tensile strength hollow fiber PVDF ultrafiltration membrane can be fabricated using the proposed technique.

  • In this study, we used thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) to produce water treatment membrane and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), silica with excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance to evaluate characterization of the membrane. The diluents used for the characterization were dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). We observed the crystallization temperature, cloud point and SEM images to see the manufacture conditions according to the ratio of PVDF and silica. The crystallization temperature and cloud point increased with the contents of silica. Through the phase diagram drawn from these results, the conditions for the preparation of the membrane confirmed.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has drawn much attention due to its many advantages. PVDF shows high mechanical strength and flexibility, thermal stability, and good piezoelectricity enabling its application to various fields such as sensors, actuators, and energy transducers. Further studies have been conducted on PVDF in the form of thin films. The thin films exhibit different ionic conductivity according to the number of pores within the film, letting these films to be applied as electrolytes or separators of batteries. Porous PVDF membranes are also easily processed, usually made by using electrospinning. However, a large portion of researches were conducted using PVDF membranes produced by far field electrospinning, which is not a well-controlled experimental method. In this paper, we use near field electrospinning (NFES) process for more controlled, small-scaled, mesh type PVDF structures of nano to micro fibers fabricated by controlling process parameters and investigate the properties of such membranous structures. These membranes vary according to geometrical shape, pore density, and fiber thickness. We then measured the mechanical strength and piezoelectric characteristic of the structures. With various geometries in the fiber structures and various scales in the fibers, these types of structures can potentially lead to broader applications for stretchable electronics and dielectric electro active polymers.

  • Ohmic joule heating electrodes were developed for the electrical heater of the floor of a room. A composite slurry of super pure black and polyvinylidene fluoride with/without the additives of multi-walled carbon nanotube or kindney stone powder was coated as a thin film on the polyethylene terephthalate film. The performances of heating electrodes were evaluated checking specific conductivity, adhesion strength and hardness. The addition of kindney stone powder increases specific resistance and hardness in a small extent. However, the addition of carbon nanotube increases specific conductivity and hardness. The properties of various compositions of ohmic joule heating electrodes were evaluated.

  • In this study, a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was modified by coating neutral hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol). The flux of pure water was measured and then fouling test was conducted with bovin serum albumin (BSA) as model protein foulant. As a result, the experiments showed that pure water flux was decreased but anti-fouling property was significantly enhanced. Pure water flux with increasing molecular weights of the polymer was decreased and fouling resistance was enhanced. Also, Pure water flux with increasing solution concentration was decreased and fouling resistance was enhanced. It is probably due to the increase in hydrophilicity and decrease in roughness of the membrane surface, as revealed by contact angle and AFM analysis.

  • As body postures on bed affects various sleep related diseases, it is considered as important information when monitoring sleeping in daily life. Though there have already been a few approaches to monitor body postures on bed conventionally, the development for simple and unconstrained methods is still needed to realize the long-term daily monitoring. Focusing on the fact that ballistocardiogram changes depending on the body postures on bed, we developed a novel method to estimate body posturesusing extremely simple, film-type ballistocardiogram sensor which is based on polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) film. With 10 subjects, we performed two experiments. One was for an estimation test to show that body postures on bed can be estimated by ballistocardiogram, and the other was for a reproducibility test to present the feasibility of ballistocardiogram based body postures monitoring. To estimate body postures on bed, we made an individual template set of body postures by designating one ballistocardiogram (BCG) sample as a template in each postures. Then, we calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients between a sample and each templates and estimated the body posture of the sample by choosing a posture which corresponds to the most significant correlation coefficients. As a result, we estimated body postures on bed with 99.2% accuracy in average and found that the estimation using ballistocardiogram is reproducible.

  • In this study, the PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) piero-film sensor was applied to measure the internal quality of apple. The developed sensor detected the response signal through apple after mechanical impact on the surface of apple. The acoustical parameters at time domain such as rise time (RT), ring down count (RC), energy (EN), event duration (ED) and peak amplitude (PA) and acoustical parameter at frequency domain such as spectral density (SE) were analyzed. The size of waveform decreased as storage time of apple increased. The frequency at maximum magnitude was shifted to lower frequency band according to the storage time. The acoustical parameters showed strong relationship with storage time. The multiple linear regression equation was developed to estimate storage time of apple using the acoustical parameters at time domain and its coefficient of determination was 0.97. The internal quality of apple according to storage time is predictable using developed PVDF sensor and acoustical parameters defined in this study.

  • Mechanical energy can be harvested by triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) from biological and environmental systems. In wearable electronics, TENG has a lot of significance as biomechanical energy can be harvested from the motion of humans, which is applied in vibrational sensors. Wearable TENG is prone to moisture and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is an excellent hydrophobic material used in these applications. The presence of highly electronegative fluorine atoms leads to very low surface energy. At the same time, the performance of the device increases due to the efficient capture of the electrons on the microporous membrane surface. This similar behavior occurs with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) due to the presence of fluoride atoms, which is relatively less as compared to PTFE.
