  • Western blot analysis of lysates of Streptococcus pneumoniae revealed a single polypeptide species that cross-reacted with E. coli RecA antiserum. The apparent molecular weight of this putative RecA protein analog (RecAsp) was 24, 000 smaller than any other known RecA analogue. The RecAsp protein was present at the same level in competent and non-competent cells.

  • The PTEN tumor suppressor is mutated in diverse human cancers and in hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes. PTEN is a phosphatase that can act on both polypeptide and phosphoinositide substrates in vitro. The PTEN structure reveals a phosphatase domain similar to protein phosphatases but having an enlarged active site important for the accommodation of the phosphoinositide substrate.(omitted)

  • Transforming growth factor-${\beta}$ (TGF-${\beta}$), a hormonally active polypeptide found in normal and transformed tissues, regulates cellular growth and phenotyphic plasticity. We have previously shown that H-ras, but not N-ras, induces invasive phenotype in MCF10A human breast epithelial cells.(omitted)

  • Gelatin is a high molecular weight polypeptide derived fro mcollgen, theprimary protein component of animal connective tissues, which include bone, skin and tendon. Gelatin is usually produced from two different sources of raw materials (skins or bones) which are processed in two ways(line or acid). According to this pretreatment, gelatin can be divided into elatin type A(acid) and B(lime). The market is essentially driven by thre demand sectors: food, harmaceuticals(capsules) and photography. Although there is some potential threat in the photography sector, the oher tow sectors are well placed for futher growth.

  • Serpins (serine protease inhibitor) are single polypeptide proteins of around 400 amino acids, and have a conserved secondary structure consisted of three ${\beta}$-sheets and nine ${\alpha}$-helices. Native conformation of inhibitory serpins is a metastable and requires conformational changes to inhibit target protease.(omitted)

  • ABA-type(or AB) block copolymers composed of poly(${\gamma}$-alkyl L-glutamate) (PALG)[or poly(L-leucine)] as the A component and polyether[or poly (N-isopropy1 acrylamide) as the B component were synthesized by polymerization of (${\gamma}$-alkyl L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride initiated by primary amined located at both(or one) ends of the polymer chains. Structural studies of the block copolymers were performed in the solution and solid state. Also, artificial skin, drug delivery system of the block copolymers and cell attachment onto the copolymer were carried out for biomedical applications.
