Rice seeds of 4 cultivars including Whachung-giant embryonic rice and Nampung-giant embryonic rice, as a group of the non-waxy rice cultivars, and Shinsunchal-giant embryonic rice and Whachungchal-giant embryonic rice, as that of the waxy rice cultivars, were germinated at $27^{\circ}C$ for 3 days to compare the changes in some physicochemical properties of the starch granules and the starch-hydrolysing enzyme activities during germination, respectively. ${\alpha}-Amylase$ activity of rices germinated for 3 days found to be higher than that of malt. Especially, Whachung-giant embryonic rice and Shinsunchal-giant embryonic rice were greater in activity than other rice cultivars and possessed the activities double that of malt. In contrast, ${\beta}-amylase$ of germinated rice found to be considerably less active than malt, although the giant embryonic rice group showed prevalent activity as compared o the normal rice group. With the starch granules, the amount of long glucose chains from amylose molecules were reduced in the non-waxy type giant embryonic rices, while the chain length increase was found in the waxy type giant embryonic rices. For the distribution profile of the glucose chain length from amylopectin molecules, we could observed that the chain length with DP (degree of polymerization) ranged 33 to 66 and 14 to 32 increased with the decreasing rate of that above 67 and below 13 regardless of starch waxiness. With non-waxy type of giant embryonic rices, susceptibility for glucoamylase were found to reduce along with germination, however, increase in susceptibility was observed with waxy rice types. In addition, we found the reduction in both initiation and termination temperature, and enthalpy for gelatinization.

In high-latitude regions, temperature has risen ($0.6^{\circ}C$ per decade) and this leads to the increase in microbial degradability against soil organic carbon (SOC). Furthermore, the decomposed SOC is converted into green-house gases ($CO_2$ and $CH_4$) and their release could further increase the rate of climate change. Thus, understanding the microbial diversity and their functions linked with SOC degradation in soil-thawing model is necessary. In this study, we divided tundra soil from Council, Alaska into two depth regions (30-40 cm and 50-60 cm of depth, designated as SPF and PF, respectively) and incubated that for 108 days at $0^{\circ}C$. A total of 111,804 reads were obtained through a pyrosequencing-based metagenomic study during the microcosm experiments, and 574-1,128 of bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and 30-57 of archaeal OTUs were observed. Taxonomic analysis showed that the distribution of bacterial taxa was significantly different between two samples. In detail, the relative abundance of phyla Actinobacteria and Firmicutes largely increased in SPF and PF soil, respectively, while phyla Crenarchaeota was increased in both soil samples. Weight measurement and gel permeation chromatography of the SOC extracts demonstrated that polymerization of humic acids, main component of SOC, occurred during the microcosm experiments. Taken together our results indicate that these bacterial and archaeal phyla could play a key function in SOC degradation and utilization in cold tundra soil.
To investigate the effect of heating conditions on the polymerization of methyl linoleate, the esters were heated at $60^{\circ}C,\;90^{\circ}C,\;120^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively, with sparging oxygen for different periods of time. On the basis of the peroxide curve obtained at each of the four temperatures, four heating times were chosen for the analysis of the polymers and total oxidation products. Significant linear relationships were found between polymer contents and total oxidation product contents. The contents of polymers and their linkage types were analyzed by High Performance Size Exclusion Chromatography. The polymers formed at four temperatures were qualitatively identified as dimers. The dimers with peroxide linkages were detected from methyl linoleate oxidized at $60^{\circ}C\;and\;90^{\circ}C$ but they were not detected from methyl linoleate oxidized at $120^{\circ}C\;and\;150^{\circ}C$. Therefore, all dimers formed at $120^{\circ}C\;and\;150^{\circ}C$ seemed to be the ones with ether linkage or carbon to carbon linkage. The degradation rate of the dimers with peroxide linkages at $90^{\circ}C$ was faster than at $60^{\circ}C$.
Mechanical properties and microleakage of two composites [conventional hybrid type DenFil (VERICOM Co., Anyang, Korea) / micro matrix hybrid type Esthet X (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE, U.S.A.)] were evaluated to assess whether variable light intensity curing is better than conventional curing technique. Curing was done for 40 seconds in two ways of 2 step soft-start technique and 5 step ramping technique. Three kinds of light intensities of 50, 100, $200{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ were initially used for 10, 20, 30 seconds each and the maximum intensity of $600 {\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ was used for the rest of curing time in a soft-start curing tech nique. In a ramping technique, curing was done with the same initial intensities and the light intensity was increased 5 times with the same rate to the maximum intensity of $600{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$. After determining conditions that showed no different mechanical properties with conventional technique, Esthet X composite was filled in a class V cavity, which dimension was $4{\times}3{\times}1.5{\;}mm$ and cured under those conditions. Microleakage was evaluated in two ways of dye penetration and maximum gap estimation through SEM observation. ANOVA and Spearman's rho test were used to confirm any statistical significance among groups. The results were as follows : 1 Several curing conditions of variable light intensities resulted in the similar mechanical properties with a conventional continuous curing technique, except conditions that start curing with an initial light intensity of $50{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$. 2. Conventional and ramping techniques were better than soft-start technique in mechanical properties of microhardness and compressive strength. 3. Soft-start group that started curing with an initial light intensity of $100{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 seconds showed the least dye penetration. Soft-start group that started curing with an initial light intensity of $200{\;}mW/\textrm{cm}^2$ for 10 seconds showed the smallest marginal gap, if there was no difference among groups. 4. Soft-start technique resulted in better dye-proof margin than conventional technique(p=0.014) and ramping technique(p = 0.002). 5. There was a very low relationship(p=0.157) between the methods of dye penetration and marginal gap determination through SEM evaluation. From the results of this study, it was revealed that ramping technique would be better than conventional technique in mechanical properties, however, soft-start technique might be better than conventional one in microleakage. It was concluded that much endeavor should be made to find out the curing conditions, which have advantages of both aspects or to solve these kinds of problems through a novel idea of polymerization.

This study is an experimental study on the recycling of bottom ash in coal ash discharged from a thermal power plant. Bottom ash has limited research on recycling because it has more porous and higher water absorption ratio than fly ash. In this paper, the bottom ash was pulverized to a specific surface area of $4,000cm^2/g$ in order to use as a binder, and the flow, compressive strength test and microstructure analysis of the bottom ash based geopolymer mortar were performed. The flow measurement results of the geopolymer mortar showed that the flow rate was improved by increasing mixing water as the molar concentration of activator was increased. Compressive strength increased with increasing curing temperature and molar concentration. Through the microstructure analysis, we could confirm the geopolymer gel produced by the reaction of the condensation polymerization. It is considered that it is possible to make the bottom ash based geopolymer concrete through proper molar concentration of activator and high temperature curing.
An organic radical polymer (ORP) was prepared by radical polymerization and following oxidation into nitroxyl radical. Two different oxidation methods were employed and their radical concentrations were measured using electroparamagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and UV-visible absorption (UV-vis) spectroscopy. From these measurements, $H_2O_2-Na_2WO_4$ oxidation method exhibited a complete oxidation, which resulted in 97.6% spin concentration. Also, it was revealed that convenient and cheap UV-vis measurement was useful for preliminary radical concentration comparison. After applied as a cathode material in lithium ion batteries, ORP electrode showed a high initial capacity ($110mAh\;g^{-1}$), a good initial efficiency (96%), a very high rate performance (70% charging during 1.2 min) and stable cycle performance.
Kind of monomer(MMA, EA, BA, St)and the monomer ratio(80/20 to 20/80) where changed in the preparation of the core shell binder, and property was improved the plasma processing. Each material changed by plasma treatment time($1{\sim}10\;s$) to change to measure the tensile strength, contact angle and adhesion peel strength for the core shell binder optimal conditions for handling the output of the surface treatment. The type of polymerization and composition of the binder is a regardless initiator of APS, the reaction temperature of $85^{\circ}C$ to 0.3 wt% of the surfactant used to indicate when the conversion rate was the highest, core shell composite particle binder got two glass temperature curves. Core shell binder after the plasma processing contact angle change is the PEA/PSt 38 percent of cases within five seconds to indicate slight decrease was a decline rapidly if not handled $0^{\circ}$ to reach. Tensile strength PSt/PMMA varies $46.71{\sim}46.27\;kg_f$/2.5 cm and adhesion strength PEA/PMMA varies $7.89{\sim}14.44\;kg_f$/2.5 cm increases. Overall, adhesion strength of core shell composite particle is in the order of order PEA>PBA>PSt for shell monomer MMA.
In order to improve the adhesion of water-based adhesive, gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants were synthesized and applied to water-based adhesives. The surfactants were synthesized by using maleic acid and polyoxyethylene cetyl ether having different length of ethylene oxide and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H-NMR$. Their appearance was light yellow wax. The cloud point of the compound was more than $78^{\circ}C$. The measured critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}7.0{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ and surface tension at c.m.c was 25.9~32.0 mN/m. As the number of ethylene oxide increased, the emulsifying power was improved. The foaming height of each compound by Ross-Miles method was 1.4~4.5 cm. The synthesized surfactants was then used as an emulsifier in emulsion polymerization of water-based adhesives and its physical properties were evaluated. The solid contents of prepared adhesives was 59%. The average particle size and initial tackiness of the prepared adhesives were 164~297 nm and ball no. of 20~32, respectively. The peel strength was $1.8{\sim}2.1kg_f/mm$. The retention rate of adhesives viscosity was evaluated to 99% during 30 days. Therefore, synthesized gemini type nonionic reactive surfactants are expected to be applied as an emulsifier for the high adhesive force.
This study was carried out to improve the physical and mechanical properties of Pupulus alba $\times$ glandulosa treated by the heat and compression. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The specific gravity of the wood was conspicuously increased by the lincreasing of pressing level. 2. The shrinkage of the wood was increased. by the increasing of pressing level. The radial shrinkage was 6.41-8.81%, the tangential shrinkage was 8.98-19.81 %, and the longitudinal shrinkage was 1.46-1.91 %. Comparing to the untreated stock, the rate of increase was 48.7-104.4% in radial direction. 1.7-124.4% in tangential direction and 60.4-109.9% in longitudinal direction, respectively. 3. The rate absorption of 30% compressed stock was Similar to that of untreated stock. but the rate of absorption of 40 % or more compressed stock was increased highly. 4. The thickness swelling of the wood was not changed in radial direction at pressing level, but was conspicuously increased in tangential direction under the pressing level of 40% and 50%. 5. The heat and compression treatment affected on the mechanical properties of the wood. The longitudinal compressive strength was increased under the pressing level of up to 40%, but was decreased under the pressing level of 50%. The bending strength was not changed under the compression percentage of up to 30%, but was decreased under the pressing level of 30% or more. And, the absorbed energy in impact bending was increased to 128% under the pressing level of up to 30%, but was decreased under the pressing level of 30% or more. Conclusionly, the mechanical properties of the wood was improved by the heat and compression treatment, but the strength of the wood was decreased under the pressing level of a certain level or more(in this study, pressing level of 30% or more). This was because of the wood deterioration due to the deformation(shrinkage, crack, failure) of wood tissues induced by the heat and compression treatment, the heat analysis of wood components induced by the heating, and the drop of the degree of polymerization.
Vinyl acetate usually used in PVA resin preparation was converted to PVAc by bulk polymerization using AIBN as a initiator and PVA was synthesized by changing the concentration of NaOH added for saponification subsequently. As a result of estimating molecular weight using GPC, molecular weight increased as the NaOH concentration increased to 2.5 N, 5.0 N, 7.5 N and 10.0 N and polydispersity had similar values of 2.1~2.3, however, showed slightly decreasing tendency. In addition, PVA saponificated by 10.0 N-NaOH showed high syndiotacticity in observation of tacticity using NMR spectroscopy. From this fact, the degree of tacticity was predicted to be high and it was in good agreement with the tendency of polydispersity by GPC. Also, from the result of FT-IR spectroscopy, it might be known that hydrolysis was more promoted in the PVA with 10.0 N-NaOH than other NaOH concentration. Intrinsic viscosity measured using Ubbelohde viscometer, which increased as the concentration of NaOH added for saponification increased. The change of shear strength with the change of shear rate was investigated using Brookfield viscometer, in consequence, viscosity of PVA synthesized decreased as shear rate increased. PVA solution confirmed to show the shear thining behavior by Casson plot and PVA with 10.0 N-NaOH had the largest yield value. DSC measurement was performed to know the thermal properties of PVA. Tp had nearly constant value of 214$^{\circ}C$ in all cases except for adding 2.5 N-NaOH and $\Delta$H was increased as the concentration of NaOH increased. From this properties, it was concluded that the degree of hydrogen bonding was proportional to the added concentration of NaOH and the increase of the degree of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction could affect the rheological and thermal properties of title compound.
