  • Many tribological components in automobile engine undergo high load and sliding speed with thin film thickness. The lubrication characteristics of the components are regarded as ether hydrodynamic lubrication or boundary lubrication, whereas in a working cycle they actually have both characteristics. Many modem engine lubricants have various additives for better performance which make boundary film formation even under hydrodynamic lubrication regime. Conventional Reynolds equation with the viewpoints of continuum mechanics concerns only bulk viscosity of lubricant, which means that its simulation does not give insights on boundary lubrication characteristics. However, many additives of modern engine lubricant provide mixed modes of boundary lubrication characteristics and hydrodynamic lubrication. Especially, high molecular weight polymeric viscosity index improvers form boundary film on the solid surface and cause non-Newtonian fluid effect of shear thinning. This study has performed the investigation about journal bearing system with the mixed concepts of boundary lubrication and hydrodynamic lubrication which happen concurrently in many engine components under the condition of viscosity index improver added.

  • The compression properties of the 2 folded yams such as compression linearity, compression resilience, and compression work with various wool/polyester blend ratios and with single and 2-folded yarn twists under various degrees of twisting were studied for analyzing twist characteristics, inter and intra frictional effects. A variation of single and 2-folded yarn twists was analysed in their twist structure. This structural analysis was discussed with various wool/polyester blend ratios and various single and 2-folded yarn twists.

  • Silybin is the main component of Cardus marianus extracts originated from Silybum marianum and has a hepato-protective effect. It is a water-insoluble compound and poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in very low oral bioavailability(BA). Polymeric mixed-micelle precursor formulation was made to enhance the dissolution rate of silybin, showing the results of pH-independent release profile with increased dissolution. Oral BA of different preparations in rats was evaluated, revealing that the new formulation showed increased BA more than 2-fold and 4-fold compared to the marketed product and Cardus marianus extracts itself, respectively.

  • This paper presents a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) technique to obtain compressive stress-strain data for rubber materials. An experimental technique that modifies the conventional Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) has been developed for measuring the compressive stress-strain responses of materials with low mechanical impedance and low compressive strengths such as rubber. This paper introduces an all-polymeric pressure bar which achieves a closer impedance match between the pressure bar and the specimen materials. In addition, we are a pulse shaper to lengthen the rising time of the incident wave to ensure stress equilibrium and homogeneous deformation of a rubber materials. It is found that the modified technique can be determine the dynamic deformation behavior of an NBR rubber more accurately.

  • Synthesis of a deuterium-labeled derivative of nitrospirobenzopyran (NSP), one of representative photochromic compounds, has been described. Four deuteriums were successfully introduced on 1-methyl and ${\alpha}$-methyne relative to spiro-carbon in the title compound with more than 95atom%D purity. Main photodegraded products of NSP were two oxindoles in acetonitrile, and additional products were formed in poly(isobutyl-methacrylate) films possibly due to restricted molecular motion in polymer matrix. Quantitative HPLC analysis revealed that partial introduction of deuterium to NSP brought a noticeable isotope effect, recognizable enhancement in photo-resistivity of NSP, i.e.,8.3% in solutions and 29% in polymeric films.

  • An important process for making a new class of polymeric material is called microcellular plastics invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Many researches for microcellular plastics have been done in various ways and fields. But a research for the polymer which has previous history has not been tried yet. In this paper, weight gain of $CO_2$ was measured in a polymer matrix which had previous history and no history. In each case, experimental data for solubility and diffusivity was shown. A model for $CO_2$ solution process in molecular range was made. The conclusion of this paper is that the previous history has an effect on diffusivity but not solubility and the previous history made by $CO_2$ in supercritical state makes diffusivity of $CO_2$ larger.

  • We have demonstrated Forst-type resonance energy transfer (FRET) in the quasi-solid type dye-sensitized solar cells between organic fluorescence materials as an energy donor doped in polymeric gel electrolyte and ruthenium complex as an energy acceptor on surface of $TiO_2$. The strong spectral overlap of emission/absorption of energy donor and acceptor is required to get high FRET efficiency. The judicious choice of energy donor allows the enhancement of light harvesting characters of energy acceptor in quasi-solid dye sensitized solar cells which increase the power conversion efficiency. The enhanced light harvesting effect by the judicious choice/design of the fluorescence materials and sensitizing dyes permits the enhancement of photovoltaic performance of DSSC.

  • Low-operating voltage organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have been realized with high dielectric constant (${\kappa}$) polymer such as cyanoethylated poly vinyl alcohol (CR-V, ${\kappa}=12$). Since the $high-{\kappa}$polymers are likely to contain water and ionic impurities, large hysteresis and considerable leakage current are frequently observed in OFETs. To solve these problems, we cross-linked the CR-V by using a cross-linking agent. Cross-linked CR-V dielectrics showed high dielectric constant of 11.1 and good insulating properties, resulting in a high capacitance ($81nF/cm^{2}$ at 1MHz) at 120 nm of dielectric thickness. Pentacene FETs with cross-linked CR-V dielectrics exhibited high carrier mobility ($0.72\;cm^{2}/Vs$), small subthreshold swing (185 mV/dec) and little hysteresis at low-operating voltage (${\Leq}-3V$).

  • Polymer hydrogel has attracted considerable interest as a soft material which is finding expanding applications in pharmaceutics and various biomedical fields. In this work, modified PNVP hydrogels were synthesized by crosslinking polymerization of NVP monomer in the presence of PEG macromer with a methoxy end. The effect of the tethered PEG chain on the properties of the hydrogel was investigated in terms of its swelling capacity, compression gel strength, and the morphology of the resulting hydrogels. These PEG-modified PNVP hydrogels possessed good biocompatibility and a decreased protein (fibrinogen) adsorption, thereby indicating their potential as novel drug delivery matrices and scaffold for tissue engineering.

  • Antioxidants are known to affect the feeding habits of termites and a good source is pine bark which contains high levels of antioxidants which can be extracted with neutral solvents. In this study procyanidins (PCs)-rich MeOH-extract and a hot-water extract (HWE) were prepared from Pinus radiata bark. HWE was further separated into crude PCs (CPCs), polymeric PCs (PPCs), and low-molecular-weight PCs (LMWPCs) fractions. The MeOH extract and these fractions were examined for termite (Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar) antifeedant activities using a no-choice test. Catechin was used as a positive control. The LMWPCs was found to be the most effective deterrent to termite feeding. The comparative efficiency of the compounds tested were LMWPCs > PPCs > CPCs > MeOH extract, with the latter being more dependent on molecular weight than on its antioxidant activity.
