Novel Smart Polymeric Composites for Thermistors and Electromagnetic Wave Shielding Effectiveness from TiC Loaded Styrene-Butadiene Rubber

  • The electrical conductivity during vulcanization process was measured as a function of time for the system of TiC loaded styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites. The phenomenon of negative and positive temperature coefficients of conductivity and its conduction mechanism were also studied for the SBR polymeric composites. The current-voltage characteristics of the polymeric composites were non-linear in high voltage and showed a switching effect. The effects of temperature on the thermal conductivity and effective dielectric constant were measured. The measured parameters were found to be dependent on TiC concentration. The electromagnetic wave shielding (EMS) of the SBR-TiC polymeric composite was also examined. The SBR filled with TiC could be expected to be promising novel smart polymeric composites for self-electrical heating, temperature sensor, time delay switching, and electro-magnetic wave shielding effectiveness.

Surface Modification of Colloidal Silica Nanoparticles: Controlling the size and Grafting Process

  • Surface modification of colloidal silica nanoparticles without disrupting the electric double layer of nanoparticles is a major challenge. In the work, silane was employed to modify colloidal silica nanoparticles without inducing bridge flocculation obviously. The effect of pH value of the silica sol, the amount of silane in feed, and reaction temperature on the graft amount and the final size of modified particles was investigated. The increased weight loss by TG and the appearance of $T_2$ and $T_3$ except for $Q_2$ and $Q_3$ signals by CP/MAS $^{29}Si$ NMR of the modified samples verified the successful grafting of silane. The graft amount reached 0.57 mmol/g, which was slightly lower than theory value, and the particle size remained nearly the same as unmodified particles for acidic silica sol at the optimum condition. For alkaline silica sol after modification, aggregates composed of several nanoparticles connected together with silane moleculars as the bridge appeared.

  • Bimodal flocculation describes the aggregation and breakage processes of the flocculi (or primary particles) and the flocs in the water environment. Bimodal flocculation causes bimodal size distribution with the two separate peaks of the flocculi and the flocs. Extracellular polymeric substances and ionic species common in the water environment increase the occurrence of bimodal flocculation and flocculi-floc size distribution, under the flocculation mechanisms of electrostatic attraction and polymeric bridging. This study investigated bimodal flocculation and flocculi-floc size distribution, with respect to the extracellular polymeric substance concentration and ionic strength in the kaolinite-containing suspension. The batch flocculation tests comprising 0.12 g/L of kaolinite showed that the highest flocculation potential occurred at the lowest xanthan gum (as extracellular polymeric substances) concentration, under all the ionic strengths of 0.001, 0.01, and 0.1 M NaCl. Also, it was important to note that the higher ionic strength resulted in the higher flocculation potential, at all the xanthan gum concentrations. The bimodal flocculation and flocculi-floc size distribution became apparent in the experimental conditions, which had low and intermediate flocculation potential. Besides the polymeric bridging flocculation, steric stabilization increased the flocculi mass fraction against the floc mass fraction, thereby developing the bimodal size distribution.

HALS 그룹을 가진 새로운 고분자형 자외선 안정제의 합성 및 특성 (Synthesis and Properties of New Polymeric Photostabilizers Containing HALS Groups)

  • 액상 이소프렌 고무에 무수 말레간(MAH)을 그라프팅시킨 후 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol (TMPO)를 반응시켜 hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS)가 함유된 새로운 고분자형 광안정제를 합성하고, SBR에 대한 광안정제로서의 특성을 관찰하였다. 새로운 고분자형 광안정제의 조성과 물리적 성질은 적정법, GPC 그리고 열중량 분석에 의하여 분석하였다. SBR의 광산화 반응에 대한 고분자형 광안정제의 효과를 254nm 자외선 조사에 따른 자외선 흡광도의 변화, 관능기 변화 그리고 잔막율로서 관찰한 결과, 새로운 고분자형 광안정제를 첨가함으로써 광산화 반응이 효과적으로 억제되었다. 또한, 고부자형 광안정제의 추출내성은 저분자량의 모델 화합물에 비하여 훨씬 우수하였으며, 고분자형 광안정제와 SBR의 상용성은 TMPO가 SBR 필름 표면에 균일하게 고루 분산되어 있어서 매우 우수하였다.

A Polymeric Micellar Carrier for the Solubilization of Biphenyl Dimethyl Dicarboxylate

  • A polymeric micelle drug delivery system was developed to enhance the solubility of poorly-water soluble drug, biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate, DDB. The block copolymers consisting of poly(D,L-lactide) (PLA) as the hydrophobic segment and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) as the hydrophilic segment were synthesized and characterized by NMR, DSC and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. The size of the polymeric micelles measured by dynamic light scattering showed a narrow monodisperse size distribution with the average diameter less than 50 nm. The MW of mPEG-PLA, 3000 (MW of mPEG, 2 K; MW of PLA, 1K), and the presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments on the polymeric micelles were confirmed by MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy and NMR, respectively. Polymeric micelle solutions of DDB were prepared by three different methods, i.e. the matrix method, emulsion method and dialysis method. In the matrix method, DDB solubility was reached to 13.29 mg/mL. The mPEG-PLA 2K-1K micelle system was compared with the poloxamer 407 micelle system for their critical micelle concentration, micelle size, solubilizing capacity, stability in dilution and physical state. DDB loaded-polymeric micelles prepared by the matrix method showed a significantly increased aqueous solubility (>5000 fold over intrinsic solubility) and were found to be superior to the poloxamer 407 micelles as a drug carrier.

폴리머 피뢰기의 구조에 따른 온도와 누설전류 특성 (Temperature and Leakage Current Characteristics with Structure of Polymeric Surge Arresters)

  • This paper presents the temperature characteristics with the structure of 18 kV surge arresters for distribution system. Three types of polymer arrester were fabricated and a ceramic arrester was also prepared to investigate. Below $100^{\circ}C$, three types of polymeric arresters exhibited almost the same leakage current value, but above $100^{\circ}C$, the polymeric arresters whose module was injected into polymeric housing with the grease exhibited the highest leakage current. In contrary, the arresters being manufactured by directly injecting silicone rubber onto arrester module exhibited the lowest leakage current. The rapid rising of leakage current of the polymeric arresters with the grease at $120^{\circ}C$ was because of the deterioration of the insulation characteristics of the grease between the FRP module and the silicone housing. All polymeric arresters exhibited the same surface temperature characteristics but the ceramic arresters was slower than the polymer arrester in heat emission despite the lowest leakage current. It was thought that the air layer between ZnO varistor blocks and the ceramic housing prevented the heat emission.

Influence of Reaction Conditions on the Grafting Pattern of 3-Glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane on Montmorillonite

  • Surface modification of montmorillonite (MMT) with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (3GTO) in mild methanol/water mixture has been investigated in detail. The influence of reaction conditions (including silane concentration in feed, reaction time and reaction temperature) on the grafting amount and yield of silane, and further on the grafting pattern of silanes was studied by thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and BET. Higher silane concentration, longer reaction time and higher reaction temperature are all benefit to higher grafting amount. When the grafting reaction was performed with 3 mmol/g silane concentration, at $90^{\circ}C$ for 24 h, the grafted amount and yield of silane reached 1.4443 mmol/g and 30%, respectively. Based on the XRD and BET data analysis, a speculation that the grafting pattern of silanes was concentration dependence was proposed.

Preparation of Polymeric Metal Complex Containing Azo Dye Rotaxane

  • In this article, we synthesized an azo dye rotaxane containing bis(8-hydroxyquinoline) group and its polymeric metal complex with zinc. The azo dye rotaxane exhibits high pH sensitivity, solvatochromism and zinc (II) ion sensings in aqueous solution. These behaviors came from the tautomeric equilibrium between azo-hydrazone tautomers and the formation of extended conjugation. The structure of polymeric zinc complexed dye rotaxane was confirmed with NMR and FT-IR measurements. The existence of CD rings, provided by dye rotaxane formation, was found to be very beneficial in improving aqueous solubility of polymeric metal complex.

자동차용 자성폴리머 오일필터의 여과특성 연구 (The Filtrational Characteristics of Magnetic Fibrous Polymeric Filter as an Oil Filter for Automotive)

  • The magnetic fibrous polymeric oil filter for automotive was obtained by pneumoextrusion processing prepared from thermoplastic polymer(polyamide) containing magnetic particulate filer (Ba ferrite), and treated subsequently in a magnetic fields. Using an oil filter tester and particle quantifier, the dependence of filtrational characteristics of the magnetic oil filter on the parameters of mean pore sizes and magnetic properties were analyzed. Also experimental engine-bed test of oil filters was investigated. The magnetic fibrous polymeric filter was shown to possess a highly filtration efficiency in filtering the fine metal particles with increasing the magnetic force of filter element. In this study, we knew that efficiency of magnetic fibrous polymeric filter was dependent on the magnetic strength of the filter elements.
