  • In this work, the effect of cure temperature and time on the thermal stability and the exothermic cure reaction peak of a waterborne resol-type phenol-formaldehyde resin, which may be used for preparing phenolic sheet molding compounds (SMC), has been investigated using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a differential scanning calorimeter. The weight loss of waterborne phenol-formaldehyde resin was mainly occurred at three temperature stages: near $200^{\circ}C,\;400^{\circ}C$, and $500^{\circ}C$. The carbon yield at $750^{\circ}C$ for the cured resin was about 62%~65%. Their thermal stability increased with increasing cure temperature and time. Upon cure, the exothermic reaction was taken placed in the range of $120^{\circ}C{\sim}190^{\circ}C$ and the maximum peak was found in between $165^{\circ}C$ and $170^{\circ}C$. The shape and the maximum of the exothermic curves depended on the given cure temperature and time. To remove $H_2O$ and volatile components, the uncured resin needed a heat-treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for 60 min at least prior to cure or molding. Curing at $130^{\circ}C$ for 120 min made the exothermic peak of waterborne phenol-formaldehyde resin completely disappeared. And, post-curing at $180^{\circ}C$ for 60 min further improved the thermal stability of the cured resin.

  • Hot melt adhesive which is solventless type has been widely used due to the possibility of automated adhesion process. The main purpose of this study is the development of polyamide based hot melt adhesive to improve the property of conventional ethylene-vinyl acetate hot melt adhesive, which has an inherent problem against heat resistance. In this study, it was found that the terpolymers of nylon 6, nylon 66, and nylon 12(CM831, 843P types) instead of nylon homopolymer were suitable base resins for hot melt adhesive, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. According to the results, the optimum adhesion property could be obtained by the using 75/25~50/50 weight radio of CM831/843P resin as a base resin. Terpene resin was used as tackifier to improve adhesion and wetting properties. The best result can be obtained with the 10 wt.% addition of terpene resin. The terpene resin acted as proper tackifier in this system which decreased the melt temperature and viscosity, but increased the mechanical strength of adhesive itself. Also, the rheological property of the adhesive changed from typical non-Newtonian behavior to Newtonian behavior as terpene resin was added.

  • The phenol resorcinol formaldehyde resin (PRF) adhesives which are curing at ambient temperature for structural purposes were synthesized. A PRF resin is produced according to the two-stage reaction system. In first stage, a low-condensed resol or methylolated phenol were prepared from phenol by reaction with a formaldehyde in alkaline condition. The molar ratio of phenol to formaldehyde was 1.0~1.4. And in second-stage, resorcinol was added to combine with the methylol group of a low-condensed resol(R/P molar ratio 0.3). The glue-joint strength, pot-life and workability of this synthetic PRF resin were superior to conventional ambient temperature setting adhesives such as oilic urethane or water based polymer-isocyanate resin for wood adhesives.

  • Poly(hydroxamic acid) resin beads were prepared and complexed with various metal ions. We used IR spectroscopy to investigate the structure of metal complex. It proved that the products formed by introduction of metal ions gave stable and colored complex. It was found that the resin bead as synthesized would be a good column packing material for continuous extraction. Energy dispersive spectroscopy was use to study the distribution of metal ions in the resin matrix. It could be tentatively concluded that adsorption and diffusion of metal ions in the chelating resins mainly depended on the loading of the resin matrix which indicated interacting sites with metal ions.

  • Fusion and characterization of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether based thermosetting polymer mortars containing an epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand are presented here for the Experimental study. The specimens have been prepared by means of an innovative process, in mild conditions, of commercial epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand based paste. In this way, thermosetting based hybrid mortars characterized by a different content of normalized Fly ash and Rock sand by a homogeneous dispersion of the resin have been obtained. Once hardened, these new composite materials show improved compressive strength and toughness in respect to both the Fly ash and the Rock sand pastes since the Resin provides a more cohesive microstructure, with a reduced amount of micro cracks. The micro structural characterization allows pointing out the presence of an Interfacial Transition Zone similar to that observed in cement based mortars. A correlation between micro-structural features and mechanical properties of the mortar has also been studied.

  • Recently, as concerns over environmental issues are raised more and more trend to use recycled waste for producing construction materials is also raised. Especially, a case of waste resin is considerably destroying the environment due to disposal way that most waste resin produced is disposed of landfill. This study is performed by polymer concrete with recycled PET resin in terms of obtaining safely clean construction resources and protection of environment. High setting shrinkage and sensitivity to heat are main disadvantages of Polymer Concrete (PC) despites of a lot merits. The aim of this study is to investigate basic properties such as setting shrinkage, length change and sensitivity to heat about PET recycled polymer concrete. The other is to check the possibility of use of Montmorillonite as one of a lot of additive without special coupling agent. As results of experiments, various properties of polymer concrete with recycled PET resin are similar with conventional PC except that polymerization time is longer. Montmorillonite was efficiently used to reduce setting shrinkage, length change and coenicient of thermal expansion related to heat with enhanced strength

  • Hot melt adhesive based on the polyamide resin was studied to improve the conventional hot melt adhesives such as ethylene-vinyl acetate which have inherent problems against creep and heat resistance. It was found that the terpolymer of nylons6, nylon66, and nylon12 or the nylon blend instead of nylon homopolymer was suitable base resin for hot melt adhesives, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. Also, the rheological properties of the polyamide based hot melt adhesive could be controlled by the incorporation of terpene resin, butyl benzyl phthalate, and paraffin wax. The results of melt viscosities and tensile properties of adhesive itself indicated that the optimum adhesion properties could be obtained through the blending of CM831/843P resins with weight ratio 75/25~50/50. The adhesion between steel and steel was tested by using lap shear geometry. It was found that the surface roughness of steel affected the adhesion strength.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of fabric E-glass fiber reinforced laminated timber. Specimens used to Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora) and Japanese larch(Larix kaemferi). Fabric E-glass fiber was inserted in the solid wood with aqueous polymer-isocyanate resin(MPU-500). The results were as follows: 1. Aqueous polymer-isocyanate resin(MPU-500) was good resin to manufacture laminated timber. specially, it was satisfied to property standard of construction laminated timber(KS F 3021) except for two ply glass fiber. 2. Bending and shear strengths of solid wood inserted with fabric glass fibers were not different from control solid wood. But, proportional limit bending stress was increased following the number of fabric glass fibers. Therefore, it was considered that to improve the bending and shear strength of fabric glass fiber reinforced laminated timber, the glass fiber thickness and its mesh should be modified to fitness following working conditions.
