We report a microcapsule-based electronic ink display technique, containing hollow titania particles which were prepared via a complex coacervation method using gelatin and gum arabic. In order to reduce density mismatch between nanoparticels and dielectric medium, hollow titania particles were introduced. Microcapsules were then prepared using gelatin to improve the elasticity of the microcapsule wall and their electrophoretic characteristics were $investigated^1$
Condensation control of nano-particles has become important in order to fabricate minute condensed structures. In this study, we focus our attention on condensation mechanism of polymer aggregates in a resist film. The polymer aggregate is structural component of a resist material which is used in lithography process. The condensation nature of polymer aggregates in the resist film surface is observed by using atomic force microscope (AFM). By using the AFM, the condensation of polymer aggregates can be observed clearly. The condensation of polymer aggregate strongly affects to precise fabrication of resist pattern below 100nm size. The interaction force among polymer aggregates can be analyzed based on Derjaguin approximation. We also discuss about condensation nature of polymer aggregates in the resist film surface with the help of micro sphere model.

This study was the estimation of the dose distribution for proton, prompt gamma rays and proton induced neutron particles, in case of exposing the proton beam to polymer gel dosimeter and water phantom. The polymer gel dosimeter was compositeness material of Gelatin, Methacrylic acid, Hydroquinone, Tetrakis and Distilled water. The density of gel dosimeter was $1.04g/cm^3$ which was similar to water. The 72, 116 and 140 MeV proton beams were used in the simulation. Proton beam interacted with the nuclei of the phantom and the nuclei in excited states emitted prompt gamma rays and proton induced neutron particles during the process of de-excitation. The proton particles, prompt gamma rays, proton induced neutron particles were detected by polymer gel dosimeter and water phantom, respectively. The gap of the axis for gel was 2 mm. The Bragg-peak for proton particles in gel dosimeter was similar to water phantom. The dose distribution for proton and prompt gamma rays in gel dosimeter and water phantom was approximately identical in case of 72, 116 and 140 MeV for proton beam. However, in case of proton induced neutron particles for 72, 116 and 140 MeV proton beam, particles were not detected in gel dosimeter, while the Water phantom absorbed neutron particles. Considering the resulting data, gel dosimeter which was developed in the normoxic state attentively detected the dose distribution for proton beam exposure except proton induced neutron particles.
Poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(butyl acrylate) PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles were prepared by the emulsion polymerization of MMA and BA in the presence of different concentration of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the measured conversion and particle size distribution, morphology, average molecular weight distribution, observation of film formation and particle formation, glass transition temperature and physical properties of polymerized core-shell composition particles for using adhesive binder. When the concentration of 0.03 wt% surfactant, the conversions of PMMA and PBA core polymerization are excellent as 95.8% for PMMA core and 92.3% for PBA core. Core-shell composite particles are obtained 90.0% for PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles and 89.0% for PMMA/PBA core-shell composite particles. It is considered that the core and shell particles are polymerized to be confirmed FT-IR spectra and average molecular weight measured with a GPC, formation of the composite particles is confirmed by the film formation from normal temperature, and composition of inside and outside of the composite particle is confirmed by TEM photograph. The synthesized polymer has two glass transition temperatures, suggesting that the polymer is composed of core polymer and shell polymer unlike general copolymers. It is considered that each core-shell composite particle can be used as a high functionality adhesion binder by the measurement of tensile strength and elongation.
Suspension polymerization with hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer and AIBN as an initiator was conducted to synthesize PBMA particles and PBMA composite particles containing carbon black. Surface modification of silica particles by controlling pH revealed that 90% of them functioned as stabilizer and 10% were incorporated into PBMA particles. While stabilizer concentration had no impact on reaction kinetics and particle diameter, an increase in stabilizer concentration displayed an increase in molecular weights when it exceeded 1.67 wt%. An increase in initiator concentration and reaction temperature decreased molecular weights in close agreement with the theoretical equation. An increase in carbon black concentration from 1 to 7 wt%, relative to the monomer, showed a progressive decrease in reaction conversion. As carbon black was increased from 3 to 5 wt%, glass transition showed a $4^{\circ}C$ increase. The presence of carbon black was confirmed by TEM while its concentration was measured by TGA.

The dynamics of nano particles in LC medium under an external electric field is of theoretical and technological interest. In this work, the dynamical characteristics of fullerene $(C_{60})$ particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under dc electric field have been investigated. This effect was studied for homogeneously aligned nematic LC cells driven by in-plane field. The $C_{60}$ was found to be aggregated in a form of cluster inside the LC medium. Hence polystytene was used to protect the aggregation of $C_{60}$ in LC medium. When the electric field was applied, the fullerenes start to move in direction of applied electric field. The density of $C_{60}$'s particles at the electrodes increase with increase in the value of applied electric field. The dynamical motions of fullerene $(C_{60})$ particles in liquid crystal (LC) suggest that fullerene can be designed for electrophoretic displays (i.e., electronic ink).

The principal objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) crosslinking in Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) in immobilization of Fe and bimetallic Fe/Cu and Cu/Fe zero valent particles on the membrane and its efficiency on removal of nitrate in wastewater. PVDF/PEG polymer solution of three weight compositions was prepared to manipulate the viscosity of the polymer. PEG crosslinking was indirectly controlled by the viscosity of the polymer solution. In this study, PEG was used as a modifier of PVDF membrane as well as a cross-linker for the immobilization of the zero valent particles. The result demonstrates improvement in immobilization of metallic particles with the increase in crosslinking of PEG. Nitrate removal efficiency increases too.
Nucleation is the most sensitive stage in the preparation of highly cross-linked, monodisperse microspheres by dispersion polymerization, since the addition of a small amount of cross-linker results in particle deformation and coagulation. To overcome these problems, $5\;{\mu}m$ poly(methyl methacrylate) seed particles prepared by dispersion polymerization were used in the preparation of mono disperse, cross-linked PMMA particles containing up to 7 wt% divinylbenzene by seeded batch dispersion polymerization. Spherical particles with a narrow size distribution containing up to 8 wt% of EGDMA were prepared by seeded multi-batch dispersion polymerization processes. These particles were identified by scanning electron microscopy and DSC.
The viscosity effect of matrix polymer on melt exfoliation behavior of an organoclay in poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) was investigated. The viscosity of matrix polymer was controlled by changing the molecular weight of poly($\varepsilon$-eaprolactone), the processing temperature, and the rotor speed of a mini-molder. Applied shear stress facilitates the diffusion of polymer chains into the gallery of silicate layers by breaking silicate agglomerates down into smaller primary particles. When the viscosity of PCL is lower, silicate agglomerates are not perfectly broken into smaller primary particles. At higher viscosity, all of silicate agglomerates are broken down into primary particles, and finally into smaller nano-scale building blocks. It was also found that the degree of exfoliation of silicate layers is dependent upon not only the viscosity of matrix but thermodynamic variables.
Graphene-coated polymer particles have attracted research interests due to their emerging applications derived from their controlled structure and morphology. To control the properties of graphene oxide (GO)-polystyrene (PS) composite particles, the adsorption time and instantaneous adsorption conditions were investigated by varying their mixing method. Polystyrene particles prepared by emulsion polymerization were modified to have positive surface charge by adsorption of polyethylene imine (PEI) on the surface of PS particles. GO prepared by the chemical exfoliation method had negative surface charge from the oxygenated groups. The adsorption of the negatively charged GOs onto the positively charged PS particles was successfully completed, and it was found that a longer adsorption time and a greater difference in the instantaneous relative concentration led PS-GO particles to have more homogeneously coated surfaces without aggregation.
