SBR latex, polyurethane latex and epoxy latex were mixed with polyvinyl acetate emulsion in 0~15% (wt.%). For the mixtures, the viscous properties were examined. The viscosity was influenced by the dispersed phase and the chain structures of polymer, and decreased with the rising of temperatures. The viscosity was increased with mixing of epoxy latex, but decreased with addition of SBR latex or polyurethane latex. Thixotropic index was influenced on the size of micelle and hydrogen bond. The thixotropic index was increased with mixing of epoxy latex or polyurethane latex within 5%, but keep up equality over that. The thixotropic index was decreased with mixing of SBR latex within 5%, but keep up equality over that. The relative viscosity were influenced on the activity of molecule and the interference of dispersed phases, was increased with the rising of temperatures. The relative viscosity was decreased with mixing of epoxy latex, but increased with mixing of SBR latex or polyurethane latex.
Two-stage emulsion polymerizations of hydrophobic monomers on hydrophilic seed polymer particles were carried out to make core-shell composite particles. It was found that the loci of polymerization in the second stage were the surface layer of the hydrophilic seed latex particles, and that it has resulted in the formation of either eccentric core-shell particles with the core exposed to the aqueous phase or aggregated nonspherical composite particles with the shell attached on the seed surface as many small separated particles. The driving force of these phenomena is related to the gain in free energy of the system in going from the hydrophobic polymer-water interface to hydrophilic polymer-water interface. Thermodynamic analysis of the present polymerization system, which was based on spreading coefficients, supported the likely occurrence of such nonspherical particles due to the combined effects of interfacial free energies and phase separation between the two polymer phases. A hypothetical pathway was proposed to prepare hydrophilic core-hydrophobic shell composite latex particles, which is based on the concept of opposing driving and resistance forces for the phase migration. It was found that the viscosity of the monomer-swollen polymer phase played important role in the formation of particle morphology.
Polymerization of carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex takes longer time than that of acrylic emulsion due to delocalization of radical in butadiene unit having conjugated double bond. A latex stability is the most important properties owing to use intact without separating polymer from base latex. For reducing polymerization time without decreasing any properties of latex, carbon tetra-chloride which has been used as the most popular chain transfer agent was replaced to combination of tert-dodecylmercaptane and ${\alpha}$-methylstyrene dimer. The replacement yielded reducement or 2 hr in polymerization time. In the increment step, charge amount of acrylic acid was limited to 0.3 part to restrain viscosity enhancement. Just after initial step, addition of 0.1 part acrylamide prevent polymer chain from diffusing between two region followed by giving hardness and final good adhesive force to latex particles.
The effect of latex particle size on rheological and electrical properties of latex-blended polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites was investigated. Mono-dispersed PS particles synthesized either by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization or by dispersion polymerization were mixed with MWCNTs under ultrasonication, and freeze-dried to prepare the nanocomposites. As the MWCNT content increased, storage modulus, complex viscosity and electrical conductivity were substantially increased. The increase of storage modulus and complex viscosity was higher for larger PS particles. The effect of particle size on electrical properties was different depending on MWCNT content. With lower MWCNT content, the nanocomposite prepared by smaller PS particles showed higher electrical conductivity, but the opposite result was given as the content increased.
In this study, we have investigated the positively charged polymer particles using emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization for applications in electrophoretic displays. The FT-IR, Zeta potential and SEM characteristics showed that by emulsifier-free polymerization, the positively charged polymer particles were manufactured. Using these particles, we can obtain well-dispersed white latex particles in dielectric suspending media.

The purpose of this research is to develop rapid setting cement latex modified concrete (RSLMC) which will be used to overlay bridge deck for maintaining and repairing. The main experimental variables were the types of rapid setting cement and variation of latex and antifoam agent contents were selected as admixture factor, then the properties of workability and strength development and durability properties were investigated. The results of this study show that latex content give increment of a slump due to surface tension in polymer particles and reduce unit weight of water for preservation of workability. In addition, When no and 1.6~3.2% antifoam agent were mixed, 8%, 2.0~3.8% were respectively obtained. An increasing the amount of latex produced concrete with increased flexural strength, but with slightly lower compressive strength. Rapid chloride permeability and freezing-thawing test carried out. As a results, according to increment of containing ratio antifoamer, strength of RSLMC increase, permeability showed lower value than ignorable 100 coulombs. Also, in the case of more than antifoamer 1.6%, the relativity dynamic modulus is mantained more than 90%, but in case of 0, 5%, it decrease. In consequence, with the view of strength and workability of RSLMC, it is considered that appropriate content ratio of antifoam agent and latex solid are respectively 1.6% by latex weight, 15% by cement weight.
The effects of protective colloids on the colloid stability of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) latex was investigated. The stability of PVAc latex in reactive poly(vinyl alcohol) mono thiol (PVALT) (DP=1080) having 78.4% saponification value was better than poly (vinyl alcohol)(PVA) (DP=1100) having 81.6% saponification value. The colloidal stability of PVAc latex particles improved drastically with increase of the reactive PVALT. The particle surface morphology of PVAc latex was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was shown that particle size of 1ha latexes decreased with increasing reactive PVALT concentration. Therefore, the stabilities of latex for reactive PVALT protective colloid was superior to that of PVA ones. This result is due to the introduction of many thiol groups that induce chemical bonds at PVAc latexes surface, so that the formation of PVALT-b-PVAc block copolymer via the reaction of PVAc with reactive PVALT. In addition, zeta potential of the PVAc latexes decreased with increasing sodium carbonate concentration.
Polymer latices, prepared from the emulsion polymerization of vinyl monomer compounds, are widely used for many industrial applications. Included among these are uses in paints, adhesives, flocculants, and heavy-duty plastics as well as their original use in synthetic rubber compounds. The emulsion polymerization process with chemical initiator has chemical disadvantage such as removal of initiator which was left after polymerization. In this study, polystyrene latex was prepared by using ultrasonic irradiation which generate the free radical, and then it was analyzed by GPC. Reaction temperature hardly have an effect on average molecular weight. Average molecular weight is increased by increasing amount of surfactant, i.e. SDS, but polydispersity is decreased. After 90 minutes of reaction time, increase and decrease of average molecular weight Is repeated. It is proposed that monodisperse polymer is obtained by controlling ultrasonic irradiation time and surfactant concentration.
Electrically conductive polymer nanocomposites were prepared by the inclusion of graphene-based nanofillers. Graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide wrapped by poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS-RGO) were used as nanofillers to make good dispersion with the aqueous dispersion of polystyrene (PS) particles. GO sheets were synthesized by the modified Hummers' method from graphite, and PSS-RGO sheets were prepared by the reduction of GO-dispersed PSS solution with hydrazine monohydrate. Morphology and properties of PS/GO and PS/PSS-RGO nanocomposites via latex technology were investigated. Both nanofillers showed well dispersed morphology in PS matrix. Rheological and electrical percolation thresholds were 0.28 and 0.51 wt% for GO, and 0.50 and 1.01 wt% for PSS-RGO respectively. It is speculated that PS/GO nanocomposites showed better conductivity than PS/PSS-RGO counterparts due to the partial recovery of GO by thermal reduction during molding.
The polymer concentration dependence of depletion layer was investigated by means of dynamic light scattering after the very small amount of polystyrene spherical latex particles was added into the matrix solution of poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)/dimethyl sulfoxide. At the dilute regime, the magnitude of depletion layer kept constant at the level of $63{\pm}3%$ of the radius of gyration of the corresponding PVA chain. Next, at the early semi-dilute regime of $1.5{\leq}C[{\eta}]{\leq}3$, polymer concentration dependence of the layer thickness ${\delta}$ was obtained as ${\delta}{\sim}C^{-0.8}$, and this experimental value was very close to theoretical one of -0.75. However it was observed above $C[{\eta}]$ >3 that its thickness decreased abruptly, and this was ascribed to aggregation effect of latex particles which was driven by Oosawa type attractive interaction.
