  • To maintain proper operating conditions is important to get optimal output power of a PEMFC stack. The air cooled fuel cell stack is widely used in sub kW PEMFC systems. A 500W air cooled PEMFC stack was experimentally investigated to evaluate the design performance and to get optimal operating conditions for the portable application. The relationship between the operating conditions and the performance was analyzed. The results can be used as design criteria for portable PEMFC under various conditions.

  • An adsorption chiller is connected to the fuel processing/fuel cell system to increase the energy efficiency of the system. Since, the minimum temperature of $70^{\circ}C$ is needed to operate the adsorption chiller, HT-PEMFC is used as a heating source and $80^{\circ}C$ hot water in the water tank at the system is supplied to the chiller. Experimentally measured COP of the adsorption chiller was between 0.4-0.5 and the total calcuated efficiency of the connected system was between 60% and 70% comparing to 47% without adsorption chilling system.

  • Carbon thin films were deposited on STS 316L sheets by inductively coupled plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering with or without substrate bias voltage. Typical Raman spectrum for amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) was obtained, and the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) was measured to show its conductive nature. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to investigate the corrosion mechanism of the carbon coating under the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) condition. According to the pore-corrosion mechanism, the electrolyte penetrates the carbon coating through the pores and reacts with the substrate. As the substrate corrosion proceeds, the pore enlargement occurs and the surface area of the substrate exposed to the electrolyte. Applicability of the carbon coating for the PEMFC bipolar plate was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization experiments. Finally, an adhesion problem was briefly considered.

Electrochemical Characteristics of MMO(Ti/Ru)-Coated Titanium in a Cathode Environment of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (MMO(Ti/Ru) 코팅된 타이타늄의 고분자 전해질 연료전지 양극환경에서의 전기화학적 거동)

  • In this research, mixed metal oxide (TiO2, RuO2) coating was applied to grade 1 titanium as a bipolar plate for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Electrochemical experiments were carried out in an aqueous solution of pH 3 (H2SO4 + 0.1 ppm HF, 80 ℃) determined by DoE. The air was bubbled to simulate a cathode environment. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed that corrosion current densities of the titanium substrate and MMO-coated specimen were 0.180 µA/cm2 and 4.381 µA/cm2, respectively. There was no active peak. After potentiostatic experiment, current densities of the titanium substrate and the MMO-coated specimen were 0.19 µA/cm2 and 1.05 µA/cm2, respectively. As a result of observing the surface before and after the potentiostatic experiment, cracked dried clay structures were observed without corrosion damage. Both the titanium substrate and the MMO-coated specimen could not satisfy the interfacial contact resistance suggested by the DoE. Thus, further research is needed before they could be applied as bipolar plates.

  • As an alternative bipolar plate material for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), TiN-coated 316 stainless was evaluated in terms of electrical contact resistance and water contact angle. Performance and lifetime of the TiN-coated 316 bipolar plates were measured in comparison with those of graphite and bare 316 bipolar plates. At a cell voltage of 0.6 V, current density of the single cells using graphite, AISI 316, and TiN/316 bipolar plates was 996, 796, and $896mA/cm^2$, respectively. By coating 316 stainless steel with TiN layer, performance degradation rate determined to be the voltage degradation rate at a cell voltage of 0.6 V was reduced from 2.3 to 0.43 mV/h.

  • Since the discovery of the carbon nanotube(CNTs), they have attracted much attention because of unique properties that may impact many fields of science and technology. The considerable properties of CNTs include high surface area, outstanding thermal, electrical conductivity and mechanical stability. However, uniform deposition of Pt nanoparticles on carbon surface remains inaccessible territory because of the inert carbon surface. In this study, we prepared directly oriented CNTs on carbon paper as a catalyst support in cathode electrode. carbon surface was functionalized using aryl diazonium salt for increasing adhesion of Ni particles which is precursor for growing CNTs. For fabricate electrode, CNTs on carbon paper were grown by chemical vapor deposition using Ni catalyst and Pt nanoparticles were deposited on CNTs oriented carbon paper by polyol method. The performance was measured using Proton electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC). The structure and morphology of the Pt nanoparticles on CNTs were characterized by Scanning electron Microscopy(SEM) and Transmission electron Microscopy (TEM). The average diameter of Pt nanoparticles was 3nm.

Hydrocarbon-Organic Composite Membranes for Improved Oxidative Stability for PEMFC Applications (연료전지용 탄화수소 전해질 막의 산화안정성 향상을 위한 유기물 복합막의 제조 및 특성 분석)

  • In order to mitigate oxidative degradation of polymer membrane during fuel cell operation, an organic radical quencher was introduced. Rutin was selected as a radical quencher and mixed with sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) to prepare composite membrane. Physicochemical properties of the composite membranes such as water uptake and proton conductivity were characterized. Hydrogen peroxide exposure experiment, which can mimic accelerated oxidative stability test during fuel cell operation, was adopted to evaluate the oxidative stability of the membranes. The composite membranes containing Rutin showed similar proton conductivity and enhanced oxidative stability compared to pristine ones.

  • 연료전지에서 반응에 참여하는 주된 연료는 수소이며, 따라서 연료전지 자동차에 사용되는 고분자전해질 연료전지(Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell. PEMFC)에도 연료로서 수소를 공급해야 한다. 1㎾급 연료전지의 경우 한 시간에 약 1㎥($25^{\circ}C$, 1기압)의 수소를 필요로 하므로, 수십 ㎾ 용량의 자동차용 연료전지에는 수십 ㎥/h의 빠른 속도로 수소를 공급할 수 있는 장치가 필요하다. 또한 이러한 수소 공급 속도를 유지하면서 1회 연료 충전으로 수백 km를 자동차가 주행할 수 있도록 충분한 양의 연료가 자동차 내에 저장되어 있어야 편리할 것이다.   • An analysis program to simulate the operation of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system was set up, and system operation with variations in the working conditions of various components (especially the thermal management system) was simulated. The entire system included a PEMFC stack and balance-of-plant components such as an air-supply unit, a fuel-supply unit, and a heat-management unit (cooling system). Thermodynamic models of all components were made to evaluate the design performance of the entire system, and then off-design models were set up to simulate the operation of the entire system under arbitrary working conditions. A parametric study was carried out to examine the effects of varying the operating conditions (especially the ambient conditions and the operating conditions of the cooling system) on the operation and performance of the entire system.

  • In recent times, starting up polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFC) in sub-zero condition is a great challenge of fuel cell electric vehicle(FCEV). The water produced in a cathode during PEMFCs operate. The water changes into the form of solid/ice in sub-zero temperatures and this makes trouble in PEMFC cells. Voltage of PEMFC drops and cold startup is failed. This paper describes an experimental study on the effect of thermal cycle to degradation of MEA in PEMFC.
