상온 작동 환경하에서의 고분자 전해질막 연료전지의 성능에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Performance Under Low Operating Temperatures)

  • 본 연구에서는 휴대용 기기에 고분자 전해질막 연료전지(PEMFC)를 적용하기 위하여 상온에서 작동 시의 성능특성을 정상상태와 동적상태에서 관찰하였다. 상대습도 및 공기 화학양론비에 따른 PEMFC 성능 변화를 실험적으로 분석하였다. 또한, EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy)를 이용하여 내부 오믹 저항의 변화를 고찰하였다. $35^{\circ}C$ 조건에서 물질 전달률이 감소하여 $45^{\circ}C$ 조건에 비해 전압 변동이 10배 정도 크게 관찰되었으며 안정적인 작동을 위해 공기의 화학양론비를 2.5 보다 크게 유지하여야 한다. 또한 낮은 상대습도는 오믹 저항을 크게 증가시키며, 이를 감소시키기 위해 상대습도 60% 이상으로 작동하여야 한다.

  • Water management in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFCs) is one of the most challenging issues. Freeze start-up in the automotive applications is also important research topic in the PEMFC field. Transportation of proton and separation of reactant gases are main roles of polymer electrolyte membranes. It has been known that water in the membrane conducts as a vehicle for the proton transportation. At sub-zero temperature, the frozen water blocks the access of reactant gases to the active sites of electrode as well as occurs the physical destruction of fuel cell structures. In this study, property changes of electrolyte membranes in the freeze conditions $(at\;-25^{\circ}C)$ were investigated. For the various amount of water contained membranes, the property changes, especially for the proton conductivity, were observed after several times of freeze/thaw$(-25\~80^{\circ}C)$ cycle.

  • This study proposes polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) based cogeneration system for greenhouse heating and cooling. The main scope of this study is to examine the proposed cogeneration system's suitability for the 660 m2-class greenhouse. A 25 kW PEMFC system generates electricity for two identical air-cooled heat pumps, each with a nominal heating capacity of 70 kW and a cooling capacity of 65 kW. Heat recovered from the fuel cell supports the heat pump, supplying hot water to the greenhouse. In cooling mode, the adsorption system provides cold water to the greenhouse using recovered heat from the fuel cell. As a result, the cogeneration system satisfies both heating and cooling capability, performing 175 and 145 kW, respectively.

  • Fuel cell with high electric efficiency has many probabilities of commercial use. Especially, polymer electrolyte or proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) which is a low operating temperature and has less influence on $CO_2$ concentration is considered the power generation system of small building and household. We calculated the optimal operational plans of 1 kW household PEMFC power system based on daily electric and heat demand patterns of various size of apartments. Calculated results show that the economic feasibility of PEMFC power system is very sensitive to the cost policy of electricity and natural gas.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) with serpentine flow channel is presented. A steady state, single phase and isothermal numerical model has been established to investigate the influence of the GDL (Gas Diffusion Layer) parameters. The GDL is made of a porous material such as carbon cloth, carbon paper or metal wire mesh. For the simplicity, the GDL is modeled as a block of material having numerous pathways through which gaseous reactants and liquid water can pass. The porosity, permeability and thickness of the GDL, which are employed in the model parameters significantly affect the PEMFC performance at the high current region.

  • Pt/Nafion self-humidifying membranes for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) were synthesized via supercritical-impregnation methods. The Nafion 112 membranes were impregnated with Pt(II)$(acetylacetonate)_2$ from a supercritical carbon dioxide $(scCO_2)$ solution at $80^{\circ}C$ and 30MPa. After the impregnation, the pressure decreased slowly by releasing $CO_2$. And the Pt-impregnated Nafion membrane was converted Pt deposited Nafion membrane by reducing agent, sodium borohydride $(NaBH_4)$ with various concentrations under $50^{\circ}C$ and 2 hours. The prepared Pt-impregnated Nafion (Pt/Nafion) composite membrane were investigated by Electron Prove Micro analysis (EPMA) and X-rat Diffraction analysis (XRD) which showed distribution of Pt particle and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) a which revealed morphology of surface of Pt/Nafion composite membrane. The performance of the Pt/Nafion 112 membranes was examined in PEMFC as aself-humidifyin membranes using purpose-built equipment.

  • Recently, as the supply of residential polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) increases, the durability and lifetime of the PEMFC system are becoming important. The related studies have been mainly focused on the durability and lifetime of materials while the research on the durability and maintenance of the system level is insufficient. In this paper, a model-based fault detection method is developed considering an air supply system that is dominant to the system performance and efficiency. A commercial 1 kW residential fuel cell system is built, and experiments are conducted under various operation loads and states (normal, 6 faults). From the experimental data, nominal models and residuals are generated. With the residual pattern obtained from real-time data, the detection and classification of various faults can be possible. The technical importance of this paper is to minimize extra sensor installation by using the empirical model rather than a complex mathematical model, and to decrease the number of models by using the applicable model at three loads. Finally, the model-based fault detection method for the air supply system of a PEMFC is established and is expected to be applicable to other subsystems.

  • 고분자 전해질 연료전지(PEMFC)의 열관리는 성능 향상과 내구성 측면에서 중요한 문제이다. 일반적으로 냉각수 순환 유로를 가진 냉각판이 여러 개의 단전지 사이에 삽입되어 PEMFC 내부에서 발생하는 반응열을 외부로 배출한다. 본 연구에서는 개선된 병렬 사형유로(MPSFF)를 향상된 냉각성능을 가진 냉각판 유로형상으로 제안하고, 이를 전산유체역학(CFD) 해석을 통하여 평가하였다. 비교를 위하여 냉각수 유로로 일반적으로 사용되는 사형유로 및 병렬형유로의 냉각성능에 대한 계산도 수행하였다. CFD 결과는 개선된 병렬 사형유로가 냉각판 표면에서의 온도의 비균일도를 상당히 감소시키고, 따라서 PEMFC의 내구성과 성능을 향상시킬 수 있음을 보여주었다.

Metal foam을 사용한 고분자 전해질 연료전지 성능 연구 (A Study on Performance of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Using Metal Foam)

  • Single cell of PEMFC (polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) is composed of bipolar plates, gasket, GDL and the MEA. Bipolar plate's function is the collecting electricity, helping oxygen/hydrogen gas diffuse evenly and draining the water and heat. In this work, we have conducted experiments to low contact resistance and improve the performance of a $25cm^2$ single cell by using metal forms. We have following experimental cases: 1) Conventional graphite serpentine channel bipolar plate; 2) Channel-less bipolar plate with nickel(Ni) based metal foam which coated by various materials. We focused the difference in contact resistance and performance of the single cell with metal foam depending on various coating materials. The experimental results show the similar performance of single cells between with serpentine channel bipolar plates and with channel-less bipolar plate using metal foams. In addition, single cell with metal foam shows potential to higher performance than conventional channel.

  • 본 논문에서는 능동 연료전지 시뮬레이터를 적용한 3㎾급 연료전지 발전시스템을 제안하였다 제안된 연료전지 시뮬레이터는 실제 고체고분자형 연료전지(PEMFC)의 출력 전압, 출력 전류특성을 만들어내며, 이러한 전체 시스템의 효율적인 동작과 동 특성을 실험하였다. 본 논문에서는 제안된 시뮬레이터의 전체적인 구성도와 동작원리를 나타내었고, 연료전지 시스템의 제작 및 설계에 대해서 자세히 다루었다. 또한 제안된 시스템은 시뮬레이션과 실험결과를 통하여 검증하였다.
