  • A pack-level battery hardware-in-the-loop simulation (B-HILS) platform is implemented. It consists of dynamic vehicle models using PSAT and multiple control interfaces including real-time 3D driving and GPS mode. In real-time 3D driving mode, user can drive a virtual vehicle using actual drive equipment such as steering wheel and accelerator to generate the cycle profile of the battery. In GPS mode, actual road traffic and terrain effects can be simulated using GPS data while the trajectory is displayed on Google map. In the latter part of the paper, several performance tests of an actual lithium-polymer battery pack are carried out utilizing the developed system. All experiments are conducted as parts of actual development process of a commercial battery pack adopting 2nd generation Prius as a target vehicle model. Through the experiments, the low temperature performance and fuel efficiency of the battery are quantitatively investigated in comparison with the original nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) pack of the Prius.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop solid polymer electrolyte(SPE) for Li polymer battery. The temperature dependence of conductivity, impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical properties of PMMA/PVDF electrolytes as a function of a mixed ratio were reported for PMMA/PVDF based polymer electrolyte films, which were prepared by thermal gellification method of preweighed PMMA/PVDF, plasticizer and Li salt. The ion conductivity of PMMA/PVDF electrolytes was 10$\^$-3/S/cm, which may be applicable to a constituent of lithium secondary battery. 5PMMA20PVDFLiC1O$_4$PC$\sub$8/EC$\sub$8/ electrolyte remains stable up to 5V vs. Li/Li$\^$+/. Steady state current method and AC impedance were used for the determination of transference numbers in PMMA/PVDF electrolyte film. The transference number of 5PMMA20PVDFLiC1O$_4$PC$\sub$8/EC$\sub$8/ electrolyte is 0.55.

  • This paper presents an equivalent circuit model of a LIPB (Li-Ion Polymer battery) for Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). The proposed equivalent circuit can be used to predict the charging/discharging characteristics in time domain as well as the impedance characteristic analysis in frequency domain. Based on these features, a one-cell model is established as a function of Depth of Discharge (DoD), and a 48-cell model for a battery pack was also established. It was confirmed by experiment that the proposed model predict the discharging and impedance (AC) characteristics quite accurately at different constant current levels. To check the usefulness of the proposed circuit, the model was used to simulate a motor driving circuit with an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) inverter and Brushless DC (BLDC) motor, and it is confirmed that the model can calculate the battery voltage fluctuation in time domain at different DoDs.

  • The drone's battery system uses lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, and it is known that the cause of fire during the disposal process after using the drone is combustible gas from the battery being discarded. Most of the batteries in the disposal process generated oxygen, but a small amount of flammable gas was also generated, and a large amount of chlorine ions and sulfates were also detected in the equipment used for treatment. If a system that detects this early is configured, it will be possible to reduce the risk of accidents caused by discarded batteries.

  • As the demand for electric vehicles increases, the stability of batteries has become one of the most significant issues. The battery housing, which protects the battery from external stimuli such as vibration, shock, and heat, is the crucial element in resolving safety problems. Conventional metal battery housings are being converted into polymer composites due to their lightweight and improved corrosion resistance to moisture. The transition to polymer composites requires high mechanical strength, electrical insulation, and thermal stability. In this paper, we proposes a high-strength nanocomposite made by infiltrating epoxy into a 3D aligned h-BN structure. The developed 3D aligned h-BN/epoxy composite not only exhibits a high compressive strength (108 MPa) but also demonstrates excellent electrical insulation and thermal stability, with a stable electrical resistivity at 200 ℃ and a low thermal expansion coefficient (11.46×ppm/℃), respectively.

  • In the design of the fuel cell charger, it is important to find out the suitable topology and to design the converter to guarantee the performance of the fuel cell as well as the battery. Most of the chargers developed so far have used step-down converters. However, since the small fuel cell stack can only generate a low voltage, it is required to use the step-up converter to charge the battery. In this paper, a modified non-isolated boost charger topology for the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is proposed to meet the strict ripple requirements for the battery charge and its control method by using PI controller is detailed. The feasibility of the proposed topology and its control method is then verified by the experiments.

  • In this work, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) was prepared using polyoxyalkylene glycol acrylate (POAGA) as a macromonomer LiCoO$_2$/GPE/graphite cells were prepared and their electrochemical properties were evaluated at various current densities and temperatures. The ionic conductivity of the GPE was more than 6.2${\times}$10$^{-3}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ / at room temperature. The GPE had good electrochemical stability up to 4.5 V vs. Li/Li$^{+}$. POAGA-based cells were showed good electrochemical performances such as rate capability, low-temperature performance, and cycleability. The cells, also, passed a safety test such as the overcharge and nail-penetration test.t.

  • In this study, gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) with semi-interpenerating network of poly (methyl methacrylate) and hexanediol dimethacrylate were synthesized and their electrochemical performances were evaluated. LiCoO$_2$/GPE/graphite cells were prepared and their performances depending on discharge currents and temperatures were evaluated. The precursor containing 5 vol% curable mixture had a low viscosity relatively. GPE showed good electrochemical stability up to potential of 4.8 V vs. Li/Li$\^$+/. Ionic conductivity of the gel polymer electrolyte at room temperature and -20$^{\circ}C$ was ca. 5.9 and 1.4${\times}$10$\^$-3/ Scm$\^$-1/, respectively. LiCoO$_2$/GPE/graphite cells showed good rate capability, low-temperature performance and cycleability.

  • In this study, we prepared separators with improved thermal stability by coating microporous polyethylene (PE) film for lithium secondary battery using poly(meta-phenylene isophthalamide) (Nomex). The mechanical and thermal properties of prepared separators were evaluated by thermal stability test and TMA as a function of the Nomex concentration and coating parameters. The corresponding coated PE separator showed better thermal and mechanical properties than the original PE separator. Electrochemical properties were also assessed by ionic conductivity, cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycle.

  • The dielectric medium used in electrophoretic displays (EPDs) is required to be an environmentally friendly solvent with high density, low viscosity, and a large electric constant. Hydrofluoroether, a highly fluorinated solvent with eco-friendly characteristics, is regarded as a viable alternative medium for EPDs, owing to the similarity of its physical properties to those of the conventional EPD medium. Surface modification of particles is required, however, in order for it to disperse in the charged solvent. Also, positive/negative charges should be present on the particle surface to enable electrophoretic behavior. In this study, carbon black particles wrapped with positively charged nitrogen (N-CBs) were fabricated by a simple hydrothermal process using a poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) solution as a black coloring agent for the EPD. The dispersion behavior of N-CBs was investigated in various solvents.
