  • A new innovative composite material is textile reinforced cementitious composite (TRCC). To achieve high flexural performance researchers suggest polymer modification of TRCC matrices. In this study, nine ready mix repair mortars commonly used in construction industry and the production of TRCC elements were examined. Mechanical properties such as compressive and flexural strength, drying shrinkage were studied. Being a significant durability concern, alkali silica reaction tests were performed according to related standards. Results showed that, some ready repair mortar mixes are potentially reactive due to the alkali silica reaction. Two of the ready mortar mixes labelled as non-shrinkage in their technical data sheets showed the highest shrinkage. In this experiment, researchers designed new matrices. These matrices were fine grained concretes modified with polymer additives; latexes and redispersible powders. Two latexes and six redispersible powder polymers were used in the study. Mechanical properties of fine grained concretes such as compressive and flexural strengths were determined. Results showed that some of the fine grained concretes cast with redispersible powders had higher flexural strength than ready mix repair mortars at 28 days. Matrix composition has to be designed for a suitable consistency for planned production processes of TRCC and mechanical properties for load-carrying capacity.

  • Polymer-modified cement mortar(PCM) has been widely used for strengthening of the concrete structures due to its excellent physical properties such as high strength and durability. Adhesive strength or behavior, on the other hands, between PCM and concrete is very important in strengthening the concrete member using PCM. Therefore the adhesive failure mechanism between PCM and concrete should be fully verified and understood. This study was performed to evaluate adhesive strength of PCM to the concrete by the direct pull-out test. In the direct pull-out tests, the adhesive strength under the various pre-treatment conditions such as immersion, thunder shower, freezing and thawing are evaluated. Also, the field direct pull-out test are performed to investigate the adhesive strength of mock-up test specimens. In the results of the test, the adhesive strength value by field test are lower than those of the standard curing condition. From these comparison and investigation, field test result was similar with the thunder shower test result. The results of the test was used to evaluate the korean industrial standard of polymer modified cement mortars for maintenance in concrete.

  • Lightweight aggregate for concrete was manufactured from recycling the waste PET bottles (PET Bottle Lightweight Aggregate, LAPET). The qualities of LAPET and its mortar were investigated. Specific gravity and unit weight of LAPET was very low in comparison with river sand like as 1.39, 844 kg/㎥ respectively. In addition, compressive strength of concrete significantly decreased because of specific gravity of aggregate decreased with increases in containing ratio. When LAPET was contained to 25% and 50% of river sand, compressive strength of concrete at 28 days was indicated more 30MPa. Most of LAPET was generally showed to round shape and fluidity of mortar increased significantly due to sleeking the surface texture of LAPET. On the other hand, capillary absorption of mortar with LAPET was greatly increased in comparison with that of mortar without LAPET because of LAPET was composed of singular gradation. Absorption of LAPET was 0% because the interior structure of LAPET consists of PET like as organic high polymer. Therefore the fault of normal lightweight aggregate, absorption, will be improved. It could expect several advantages that the pollution of environment will be previously prevent and the waste resources could be recycled if LAPET is reused as aggregate for Lightweight concrete.

  • Fluosilicate salts based hydration heat reducer(SWP-HR), used in this study, is composed of fluosilicate salts, soluble silica, aromatic polymer condensate and nitrate salt based inorganic compound with latent heat property. Effects of SWP-HR addition on the hydration heat and anti-crack property of cement mortar were investigated. Adiabatic hydration temperature and drying shrinkage length of SWP-HR added cement mortar had a tendency to decrease compared to those of cement mortar without SWP-HR addition. Also, it was confirmed through crack pattern experiment of plate-form specimen for elucidating crack-reducing characteristic that anti-crack property of SWP-HR added cement mortar was improved.

  • Generally polymer mortar and concrete using unsaturated polyester resin has high strengths and good chemical resistance. However it also has high brittleness and because of this reason, it is not used for the purpose that demands high resistance to impact. The purpose of this study is to improve the brittleness of unsaturated polyester mortar(UPE mortar) which could be used for the flooring material with recycled aggregates and UPE. Polyurethane liquid rubber(PU) and recycled aggregates were used to complement the brittleness and to recycle the resources respectively. The characteristics of mortar were investigated according to the molecular weight and substitution rate of PU. As the molecular weight and PU substitution rate were increased, the viscosity was increased, working life became fast and curing shrinkage was reduced. Compressive and flexural strengths were also reduced but tile brittleness was improved. Therefore, it is seemed that the improved WE mortar could be obtained by using polyurethane liquid rubber with the polyol of molecular weight 2000, 3000.

  • With the changes of times the building materials tend to extend the demand for application under the special environment. Since high-ductile mortar is developed, the building materials show excellent performance like toughness, compression, tensile, and bending, etc. in the general concrete from the existing brittle point. And, recently they are widely used as repairing and reinforcing materials both at home and abroad because they are recognized as excellence like durability and fire-resistance. However, it is in a situation of creating problems in durability because it frequently happened deterioration of buildings that have already repaired and reinforced at a time when it requires reconstruction of recently deteriorated construction structure recently. Therefore, in this study improved with a more repair Material development and reinforcement of the second high-ductile mortar products for a variety of basic materials were presented want, research plans used include traditional repair materials and the newly developed PCM (polymer cement mortar) structural reinforcement type indicated that comparison. PCM analysis in order to present a rate depending on the types fiber 0, 1.2 and 2.0(%) at three levels and mixture water according to ratios of weight to Plain in the 2.0 and 1.85(kg) at two levels is set, the results were as follows. 1) This study has shown that PCM had excellent strain hardening behavior at the same time that the bending stress increased according to the fiber contents. 2) This study has shown that it had the durability performance due to the high substance transmission according to the fiber contents.

  • In this paper, three kinds of poly(acrylate-co-methylacrylate) with different number average molecular weight(Mn) were synthesized and studied for the effects on the mechanical properties and the fluidities of the cement mortar admixtured with them. The physical properties of the cement mortar are more favorably enhanced by the poly(acrylate-co-methylacrylate) of Mn,, 5,000 than that of Mn, 2,000∼3,000. And the optimum dosage was decided to ca. 0.6 % of cement weight in cement mortar. However, the dispersion abilities of the polymers in cement mortar was not kept long time. This last result could not be explained by the theory that the fluidity of the cement mortar added with the slow releasing polycarboxylates is kept by the releasing of the carboxylic group of the copolymer in alkaline solution of cement paste.

  • In this study, the durability of ultra rapid hardening mortar for sewage pipe was evaluated by type of mortar binder. As a result of analyzing the internal structure for each type of mortar, it was confirmed that Al2(OH)3 was generated in the internal structure of the CAC-based mortar, and its corrosion resistance was superior to that of other types of mortar. As a result of the compressive strength test, OPC had the tsmallest strength, followed by CAC100 > CAC100P > CAC80. This trend was similar to the previous study results. Chloride ion penetration resistance and freeze-thaw test showed similar trends. That is, CAC and C12A7 were better than OPC, and CSA was worse than OPC. This is mostly beacuse of cracks caused by expansion of CSA-based mortar. CAC100P mix showed the best chemical resistance. It is thought that this is because the alumina gel formed inside the mortar and the polymer combine to make the internal structure more dense.

  • A novel approach of microbiologically-enhanced crack remediation (MECR) has been initiated and evaluated in this report. Under the laboratory conditions, Bacillus pasteurii was used to induce $CaCO_3$ precipitation as the microbial urease hydrolyzes urea to produce ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia released in surroundings subsequently increases pH, leading to accumulation of insoluble $CaCO_3$. Scanning electron micrography (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses evidenced the direct involvement of microorganisms in $CaCO_3$ precipitation. In biochemical studies, the primary roles of microorganisms and microbial urease were defined. Furthermore, the role of urease in $CaCO_3$ precipitation was characterized utilizing recombinant Escherichia coli that encoded B. pasteurii urease genes in a plasmid. Microorganisms immobilized in polyurethane (PU) polymer were applied to remediate concrete cracks. Although microbiologically- induced calcite precipitation enhanced neither the tensile strength nor the modulus of elasticity of the PU polymer, cement mortar whose crack was remediated with the cemaden polymer showed a significant increase in compressive strength. Through detailed investigation, MECR showed an excellent potential in cementing cracks in granite, concrete, and beyond.
