  • We report four new phosphorescent iridium(III} complexes with 2,4-diphenyl-1,3-oxazole [$Ir(24dpo)_3$], 2,5-diphenyl-1,3-oxazole [$Ir(25dpo)_3$], 2-(3-thienyl) pyridine [$Ir(3thpyh)_3$] and [Ir(3thpy)2(acac)]. Three of them demonstrate good photophysical properties to be used as dopants to organic polymer matrix or to be used "as is" without a host matrix to fabricate OLEDs. Green and yellow light emission was observed for the photoluminescence: 569/525, 549/498 nm and 557,604/533 (solid state/$CH_2Cl_2$ solution) for $Ir(24dpo)_3$, $Ir(3thpyh)_3$ and $Ir(3thpyh)_2$acac respectively. Room temperature luminescent lifetimes are 2.5 and 1.8 ${\mu}s$ and quantum efficiencies 37 and 53%for $Ir(24dpo)_3$ and $Ir(3thpyh)_3$. The complexes are stable in air and sublimable at low pressure without considerable decomposition. Comparison of physicochemical properties of the reported iridium(III) cyclometalated compounds with that known from literature is carried out.

  • Near infrared spectroscopy techniques were used to study the cure reactions of epoxy resin system based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA) resins cured with 4, 4' diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) hardner. Stoichiometric DGEBA/DDS resin formulation was involved in this study. The infrared absorption spectra of the prepared formulation were obtained on an FTIR spectrometer operating in the region of 11000 to 4000$cm^{-l}$. The chemical group peaks of interest in a DFEBA/DDS spectrum were identified by a comparative study with individual spectra of DGEBA and DDS monomers. Where necessary, special model compounds were used to identify unknown bands, such as the primary amine band at 4535$cm^{-l}$. The absorption bands of interest were integrated to quantify the areas and then converted to molar concentrations. This series of quantitative analyses of the major chemical groups led us to understand not only the reaction mechanism but also the cure kinetics. In this paper, the reaction mechanisms observed in stoichiometric DGEBA/DDS resin formulation and the various properties of the resin system as a function of cure temperature are described.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition on silicon substrates. a-C:H thin film was irradiated to a typical He-Cd laser to study its emitting properties. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity during the irradiation achieved a maximum value when 2,000 seconds elapsed. Fourier transform infrared measurement revealed a-C:H thin film suffered transformation from a polymer-like to graphite-like phase during laser irradiation. Thermal annealing was done at various temperatures, ranging from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$ in the atmosphere, to investigate structural changes in a-C:H film by heat generation during the emission. PL intensity of a-C:H thin film increased 1.5 times without apparent structural change, as annealing temperature increased up to $200^{\circ}C$. However, a-C:H film above $200^{\circ}C$ exhibited significant decrease of PL accompanying dehydrogenation. This led to a red shift of the PL peak.

  • The increased use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) in retrofitting reinforced concrete (RC) members has led to the need to develop non-destructive techniques that can monitor and characterize the unique damage mechanisms exhibited by such structural systems. This paper presented the damage characterization results of six CFRP retrofitted RC beam specimens tested in the laboratory and monitored using acoustic emission (AE). The focus of this study was to continuously monitor the change in AE parameters and analyze them both qualitatively and quantitatively, when brittle failure modes such as debonding occur in these beams. Although deterioration of structural integrity was traceable and can be quantified by monitoring the AE data, individual failure mode characteristics could not be identified due to the complexity of the system failure modes. In all, AE was an effective non-destructive monitoring tool that can trace the failure progression in RC beams retrofitted with CFRP. It would be advantageous to isolate signals originating from the CFRP and concrete, leading to a more clear understanding of the progression of the brittle damage mechanism involved in such a structural system. For practical applications, future studies should focus on spectral analysis of AE data from broadband sensors and automated pattern recognition tools to classify and better correlate AE parameters to failure modes observed.

  • Poly(alkyl acrylate-g-caprolactone) graft copolymers were prepared, and they were applied as compatibilizing agents for polycarbonate (PC) / poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends. The incompatible poly(alkyl acrylate) segment was incorporated into the graft copolymer in order to localize the copolymer at the PC/ABS interface. The blend containing 1 phr of the copolymer showed remarkable improvement in impact strength as well as in elongation at break. Impact improvement was more pronounced with a thinner test specimens of 1/8 inch thickness. Morphological study showed that the presence of the graft copolymer led to a smoother PC/ABS interface due to the interfacial enrichment of the graft copolymer.

  • For the application in HI decomposition reaction of thermochemical water-splitting IS process, the carbonized membranes using the polymer material (polyimide) were prepared, and SiC membrane was also prepared by SiO treatment on those carbonized membranes. The weight change by the carbonation of polyimide was about 50%, and the weight decreased with an increase of carbonation temperature. The gas permeance ($H_2$ or $N_2$) of carbonized membrane decreased with an increase of carbonation temperature led to the pore closing. The gas permeance ($H_2$ or $N_2$) of SiC membrane increased with an increase of SiO treatment concentration, and the gas permeation mechanism was changed from the activiation energy flow to Knudsen flow.

  • There are increasing public concerns that the disposal of most synthetic carbon-based plastics is a great threat to the environment. These have led to intensive research and development of degradable plastics, such as biodegradable plastics, photodegradable plastics, and multi-degradable plastics. Although these degradable plastics may not completely replace common synthetic plastics, these minimize environmental impacts caused by non degradable plastics. Photodegradable plastics are synthetic polymers into which have been incorporated copolymers or light-sensitive additives to weaken the structural bonds in polymer chains when exposed to UV radiation. A better understanding of photodegradable plastics, which also play an important role in the degradation of multi-degradable plastics, will expand the usage of degradable plastics. The aim of present article is to review the formation, degradation mechanism and properties of photodegradable plastics.

  • Calixpyrroles and related macrocycles are non-planer synthetic anion receptors that have attracted considerable attentions in recent years. Although the synthesis of calix[4]pyrrole (known as meso-octamethylporphyrinogen) was reported more than 100 years ago, the anion binding properties were first discovered in 1996. The simple calix[4]pyrroles can be synthesized in single step in high yield by condensation of pyrrole with acetone. The compounds showed preferential binding for halide anions including fluoride, phosphate, carboxylate, and chloride in organic media. Efforts to improve the anion affinity of calix[4]pyrrole and to enhance its selectivity have led to the synthesis of a variety of new calixpyrrole derivatives. Among the various modifications, introduction of straps on one side of the calix[4]pyrroles are the most effective. Incorporation of aromatic rings other than pyrroles also exhibited interesting binding behaviour. Introduction of signalling units as part of the strapping element enable to detect the anions on chromogenic or fluorogenic fashion. Finding of the anion transport properties across the membrane and cytotoxic effects of the calix[4]pyrroles open new window for calixpyrrole-related research. The polymer-incorporated systems have also been employed as anion complexants in solvent-solvent extraction. These old, yet easy-to-make macrocycles have well advanced more recently with the discovery of the ion-pair complexation properties. In this review, the synthetic developments and anion binding properties of calixpyrroles for the last decades will be discussed and will cover the advances in calixpyrrole chemistry.

  • A LCoS micro-display using polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) for light switching layer was fabricated. The Si backplane of SVGA ($800{\times}600$) with a pixel size of $14{\times}14mm^2$ was prepared by a $0.35{\mu}m$ 18V CMOS process. PDLCs were filled in the gap between backplane and ITO glass by conventional vacuum filling method. The prepared panels were driven by a field sequential color (FSC) scheme at the frequency of 180Hz and were successful in modulating LED lights to show projection images. The preparation and performance of PDLC-LCoS are presented.

  • Nowadays, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are widely used for rehabilitation, repair and strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Also, recent advances in concrete technology have led to the production of high strength concrete, HSC. Such concrete due to its very high compression strength is less ductile; so in seismic areas, ductility is an important factor in design of HSC members (especially FRP strengthened members) under flexure. In this study, the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and multiple regression analysis are used to predict the curvature ductility factor of FRP strengthened reinforced HSC (RHSC) beams. Also, the effects of concrete strength, steel reinforcement ratio and externally reinforcement (FRP) stiffness on the complete moment-curvature behavior and the curvature ductility factor of the FRP strengthened RHSC beams are evaluated using the analytical approach. Results indicate that the predictions of ANFIS and multiple regression models for the curvature ductility factor are accurate to within -0.22% and 1.87% error for practical applications respectively. Finally, the effects of height to wide ratio (h/b) of the cross section on the proposed models are investigated.
