In nano-imprint lithography (NIL) process, which has shown to be a good method to fabricate polymeric patterns, several kinds of pattern defects due to thermal effects during polymer flow and mold release operation have been reported. A typical defect in NIL process with high aspect ratio and low resist thickness pattern is a resist fracture during the mold release operation. It seems due to interfacial adhesion between polymer and mold. However, in the present investigation, FEM simulation of NIL molding process was carried out to predict the defects of the polymer pattern and to optimize the process by FEA. The embossing operation in NIL process was investigated in detail by FEM. From the analytical results, it was found that the lateral flow of polymer resin and the applied pressure in the embossing operation induce the weld line and the drastic lateral strain at the edge of pattern. It was also shown that the low polymer-thickness result in the delamination of polymer from the substrate. It seems that the above phenomena cause the defects of the final polymer pattern. To reduce the defect, it is important to check the initial resin thickness.
Experimental investigation has been carried out to determine drag reducing effects of polymer additives for a plate type heat exchanger(evaporator or condenser) in OTEC power plant applications, where the pressure drop in the heat exchangers takes up $70{\sim}80%$ of the total pumping power in the existing system. The rate of drag reduction was investigated with various polymer concentrations and mass flow rates. Experiments were undertaken for a test section in Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger utilizing Poly Ethylene Oxide(Mw $5{\times}10^6$) as polymer additives. Concentrations of polymer additives were 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400 wppm at $25^{\circ}C$ and mass flow rates were 0.6kg/s, 0.7kg/s, 0.8kg/s and 0.9kg/s in normal operating ranges for a 15kW Alfa-Laval plate heat exchanger. The maximum effects of drag reductions were found at approximately 0.7kg/s of mass flow rate. The results show that there exists the optimum mass flow rate for the plate heat exchanger to obtain maximum drag reductions. Drag reduction of 20% means considerable savings in pumping power for a large size of OTEC plant.
Experimental investigations have been carried out to find the effect of drag reduction caused by effective polymer additives in turbulent flows. The experiments were undertaken with a test section of 9.8mm pipe diameter and 3500 mm pipe length(L/D=357) in a closed loop, and Copolymer-X and Polyacrylamide(PAAM) were used as polymer additives for comparisons. The tests were carried out under different polymer concentrations, and the temperatures of the flow considered were $26^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$ at the flow velocity of 5.3 m/s. The rate of drag reduction obtained by Copolymer-X is found to be considerably higher than that of PAAM in turbulent flows. Copolymer-X is also found to be very reliable for mechanical degradation, which has not been the case in any other additives. It is concluded that Copolymer-X is considered to be one of the most effective agents as an additive especially for long time hydraulic transports. It is also found that polymer degradation in more likely at lower polymer concentrations in the turbulent flows.
We have developed a monoleaflet polymer valve as an inexpensive and viable alternative, especially for short-term use in the ventricular assist device or total artificial heart. The frame and leaflet of the polymer valve were made from polyurethane. To evaluate the hemodynamic performance of the polymer valve a comparative study of flow dynamics past a polymer valve and a St. Jude Medicals prosthetic valve under physiological pulsatile flow conditions in vitro was made. Comparisons between the valves were made on the transvalvular pressure drop, regurgitation volume and maximum valve opening area. The polymer valve showed smaller regurgitation volllme and transvalvular pressure drop compared to the mechanical valve at higher heart rate. The results showed that the functional characteristics of the polymer valve compared favorably with those of the mechanical valve at higher heart rate.
The orientation and deformation of polymer chains in a confined channel flow has been investigated. The polymer chain was modeled as a Finitely Extensible Nonlinear Elastic (FENE) dumbbell. The Brownian configuration field method was extended to take the interaction between the flow and local chain dynamics into account. Drag and Brownian forces were treated as anisotropic in order to reflect the influence of the wall in the confined flow. Both Poiseuille flow and 4 : 1 contraction flow were considered. Of particular interest was molecular tumbling of polymer chains near the wall. It was strongly influenced by anisotropic drag and high shear close to the wall. We discussed the mechanism of this particular behavior in terms of the governing forces. The dumbbell configuration was determined not only by the wall interaction but also by the flow type of the geometric origin. The effect of extensional flow on dumbbell configuration was also discussed by comparing with the Poiseuille flow.
Various studies about metallic bipolar plates have been conducted to improve fuel cell performance through flow field design optimization. These research works have been mainly focused on fuel cells for vehicle, but not fuel cells for building. In order to reduce the price and volume of fuel cell stacks for building, it is necessary to apply a metallic flow field, In this study, for a metallic flow field applied to a fuel cell for building, the effect of a change in the flow field shape on the performance of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell was confirmed using a model and experiments with a down-sizing single cell. As a result, the flow field using a metal foam outperforms the channel type flow field because it has higher internal differential pressure and higher reactants velocity in gas diffusion layer, resulting in higher water removal and higher oxygen concentration in the catalyst layer than the channel type flow field. This study is expected to contribute to providing basic data for selecting the optimal flow field for the full stack of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells for buildings.
A modified low-Reynolds-number Reynolds stress model is developed for the calculation of drag-reducing turbulent flows induced by polymer injection. The results without polymer injection are compared with the results of direct numerical simulation to ensure the validity of the basic model. In case of drag reduction, profiles of mean velocity and Reynolds stress components, in two-dimensional channel flow, obtained with a proper value of viscosity ratio are presented and discussed. Computed mean velocity profile is in very good agreement with experimental data. And, the qualitative behavior of Reynolds stress components with the viscosity ratio is also reasonable.

Polymer induced turbulent drag reduction achieved by adding minute amounts of high molecular weight DNAs in aqueous solution was investigated using a rotating disk apparatus. The DNAs in this study include ${\lambda}-DNA$ and calf-thymus (CT) DNA. By putting emphasis on effect of CT-DNA concentration, its DR characteristics were compared with that of ${\lambda}-DNA$ possessing monodisperse molecular weight characteristics based on both DR efficiency and a mechanical degradation under turbulence. The DNA chains having much higher molecular size than that of ${\lambda}-DNA$ are observed to be more susceptible to mechanical degradation in a turbulent flow. This result was verified via electrophoresis. Furthermore, the coil to globule phase transition of DNA was also investigated under a turbulent flow.
Turbulent drag reduction (DR) efficiency of water soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with two different molecular weights was studied as a function of polymer concentration and temperature in a turbulent flow produced via a rotating disk system. Its mechanical degradation behavior as a function of time in a turbulent flow was also analyzed using both a simple exponential decay function and a fractional exponential decay equation. The fractional exponential decay equation was found to fit the experimental data better than the simple exponential decay function. Its thermal degradation further exhibited that the susceptibility of PEO to degradation increases dramatically with increasing temperature.
In this study, we investigated the basic properties of N-doped ethylcyclohexene plasma polymer thin films that deposited by radio frequency (13.56 MHz) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) method with controlled ammonia flow rate. Ethylcyclohexene was used as organic precursor with hydrogen gas as the precursor bubbler gas. Additionally, ammonia ($NH_3$) gas was used as nitrogen dopant. The as-grown polymerized thin films were analyzed using ellipsometry, Fourier-transform infrared [FT-IR] spectroscopy, UV-Visible spectroscopy, and water contact angle measurement. We found that with increasing plasma power, film thickness is gradually increased while optical transmittance is drastically decreased. However, under the same plasma condition, water contact angle is decreased with increasing $NH_3$ flow rate. The FT-IR spectra showed that the N-doped ethylcyclohexene plasma polymer films were completely fragmented and polymerized from ethylcyclohexane.
