  • The phosphorus comonomer [(6-oxido-6H-dibenz<1,2>oxaphosphorin-6-yl)methyl]-methyl butane-dioate (DOP-MBDA) was synthesized through the addition reaction of dimethyl itaconate (DMI) with 9,10-dihydro9-oxa-10-phosphaphenan threne-10-oxide (DOP). A series of novel flame retardant poly(butylene terephthalate)s (PBTs) containing different amounts of phosphorus were prepared using DOP-MBDA as a comonomer. These novel polymers were characterized by $^{1}H-NMR$, IR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The novel phosphoruscontaining poly(butylene terephthalate)s, referred to as FR-PBTs, exhibited interesting thermal and mechanical behavior, as well as superior flame retardancy. These properties are attributed to the effect of incorporating the rigid structure of DOP-MBDA and the pendant phosphorus group into the poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) homopolymer. The UL 94-V2 rating could be achieved with this novel flame retardant PBT, which has a phosphorus content as low as $0.5 wt\%$, and the FR-PBTs emitted less fumes and toxic gases than the PBT homopolymer.

  • We succeeded the synthesis of new functional polymers by novel ring-opening addition reactions of bis(oxetane)s with diacyl chlorides, di(active ester)s, and di(carboxylic acid)s using quaternary onium salts as catalysts at appropriate conditions. Hyperbranched polyesters with many pendant hydroxy groups were also synthesized by the polyaddition of bis(oxetane)s with tricarboxylic acid, or by the self-polyadditions of $AB_2\;or\;A_2B$ type monomers containing oxetane group. The anionic ring-opening polymerization of (3-ethyl-3-hydroxymethyl)oxetane was examined using sodium tert-buthoxide to give hyperbranched poly(ether)s containing one oxetanyl group and many hydroxyl groups in the end of polymer chain.

  • Many industrial sources of proteins can be used as raw materials to produce films, molded materials, and various hollow items either by "casting" techniques or by "thermoplastic processing". Combining proteins with natural fibbers, paper or biodegradable polyesters is very promising to form biodegradable composites witch take advantage of the barrier and mechanical properties of each component. Using nano-fillers to form nanocomposites has also been shown to be interesting to improve properties. Production, with low transformation cost, of protein based materials to form biodegradable materials with controlled functional properties for food uses, medical uses, packaging, agriculture, controlled release systems, etc. is discussed.

  • Effects of chemical structure of disperse dyes applied to conventional and microdenier polyesters on the dyeing property and washfastness were studied. It was found that washfastness of dyed polyester fabric is closely related to the degree of thermomigration of disperse dye during heatsetting. The bulky disperse dye, which was synthesized by substituting two acetoxy groups of C.I. Disperse Red 82 with two benzoxy groups, showed almost the same amount of absorbed dye by the microdenier polyester as C.I. Disperse Red 82, but the degree of thermomigration was low and subsequent washfastness was excellent. The high grade of washfastness of the bulky disperse dye might be caused by the increased dye-fiber interaction and the reduced mobility.

  • Absorbers such as porous materials and panels have limited absorption characteristics to some frequency bands. There is a need for absorbers with high absorption coefficients in a wide frequency ranges to make good response of room acoustics. This is almost impossible for a single absorption material. Composite absorption structure with cover, porous material. and air gap is known to have those wide frequency characteristics. In this basis. various composite absorption structures are measured and investigated as wide range absorption structures. Measurements are performed according to an international standard, ISO 354. Various surface types such as wooden slits, wood/steel perforated panels are selected as surface covers, and also various porous materials such as polyurethanes, polyesters, and glasswools are used inside the covers. Result shows that the area of void parts of surface materials is critical to high frequency absorptions, and thickness of air gaps are critical factor of the peak absorptions of low frequency bands.

  • Morphology of polyester fiber was physically modified by solvent treatment. PET fiber was treated with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 100, 120, $140^{circ}C$ for 10 minutes without tension. The structural changes in the morphology of DMF-induced modified PET fiber were FTIR and SEM analysis. Also dyeing behavior of DMF-treated polyester fibers with various disperse dyes was studied to detect changes of amorphous area in fine structure. DMF treatment resulted in increases in total void content, degree of crystallinity, trans isomer content, chain folding, segmental mobility and molecular packing, but it resulted in decreases in amorphous orientation, intermolecular forces and individual void size through longitudinal shrinkage, lateral welling and removal of oligomers. Void-size distribution could be estimated from the dye uptake with various sizes of disperse dyes. In contrast to the large increases in dye uptake with small dye molecules, there is no and little dye uptake with the bulkiest dye, which means that void size is bigger or smaller than the volume of each dye. Diffusion rates of dye molecules showed increases. This dyeing study revealed that the disperse dyeing is very effective method for characterizing the internal morphology of polyester fiber.

  • Six nano disperse dyes were prepared using corresponding O/W nanoemulsions which were obtained with sodium laurylsulphate and caprylic triglyceride. The average particle size of the dyes prepared were in the range of $110{\sim}130nm$. Exhaust dyeing using nano dyes resulted in low exhaustion yields of $17{\sim}26%$ on regular polyester fiber and $28{\sim}38%$ on ultramicrofiber polyester. The observed low exhaustion yields of nano disperse dye can be explained by the solubilization of dye particles into surfactant micelles as well as the high stability of the nanoemulsions, these might reduce the capacity of dye uptake onto the fibers. However, higher K/S values of dyeings with nano dyes on ultramicrofiber sites compared to those on regular polyester sites suggested their potential to be more efficient dyes for finer denier microfiber polyesters.

  • Triblock copolymers of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) middle block and degradable polyester end blocks were synthesized by the ring open polymerization initialed by alcohol groups of PDMS. Surface composition of the triblock copolymers is measured by angle-dependent electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis. The PDMS blocks are segregated in the topmost surface region and constituted up to 90 mol% of the surface, even though the overall bulk PDMS concentrations of the block copolymers is 6% or less. This result suggests that the bulk property of degradable polyesters is essentially unchanged due to the high surface segregation of PDMS.

  • A novel class of hyperbranched polyesters, HPpEP and HPmEP, were prepared via a facile one-pot polymerization of a phloroglucinol (as a $B_3$ monomer) with a phthaloyl dichloride (as an $A_2$ monomer) for replacing a problematic BPA developer in thermal printing system. The resulting polymers, HPpEP and HPmEP, had highly branched structures and met well the requirements for high performance developer materials such as colorlessness, easy and inexpensive synthesis, high thermal stability, etc. In addition, these polymers exhibited an efficient reaction with leuco dyes (ODB-2) for a coloring process by releasing protons from linear and terminal phenol groups of polymers when heated.

  • The 2-packaged polyurethane coatings were synthesized, blending pheylmodified polyesters(of which synthetic methods were reported in the previous paper), Desmodur L-75(polyisocyanate wide1y used for coatings), wetting-dispersing agent, white pigment. etc. A variety of coating properties were tested for the coating treatment polyurethane coationgs. Compared with conventional 2-packaged polyure-thane coating, abrasion resistance and lightness index difference of the ones synthesized in the present work were somewhat decreased, but the coating properties such as hardness, gloss specular, cross hatch adhesion. etc. were improved. Especially, resistance against chemical reagents and salt were strikingly improved. In addition. the coationgs had short drying time and long pot-life. This shows that the coationgs are appropriate for rapid drying coatings.
