We synthesized polyester-diol containing Cloisite 30B which is exfoliated during the synthesis. First, esterification was conducted with excess adipic acids and two 2-hydroxyethyl groups of the tertiary ammonium tethered to Cloisite 30B silicate layer. Due to the small molecular size of adipic acid ($d{\approx}3.0\;{\AA}$, $L{\approx}9.3\;{\AA}$), it penetrated into the interlayer of Cloisite 30B, reacted with the 2-hydroxyethyl groups, and produced the tertiary ammonium that has the two ethyl-ester adipic acid groups, one methyl group, and one hydrogenated alkyl group. Through the esterification, the molecular size of the tertiary ammonium increased and as the result, the basal space of Cloisite 30B increased from $18.4\;{\AA}$ to more than $58.3\;{\AA}$. The produced ethyl-ester adipic acid and unreacted adipic acid reacted with excess diethylene glycol ([COOH]/[OH]${\approx}0.6$) to be polyester-diol. The COOH conversion calculated from the acid value of the reactant mixture was 94%. The number average molecular weight and PDI of the produced polyester-diol were 830 g/mol and 1.2, respectively.

In this study, polyurethane dispersion was prepared by polyester polyol, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), and monomeric diol. The effect of various monomeric diol, polyol/monomeric diol molar ratio and DMPA contents on the properties of polyurethane dispersion were investigated. As the molecular weight of monomeric diol and monomeric diol molar ratio increased, $T_g$ gradually increased. And when DMPA contents increased, also $T_g$ gradually increased. In the results of mechanical properties, when the molecular weight of monomeric diol, monomeric diol molar ratio of polyol/monomeric diol and DMPA contents increased, tensile strength was increased. Finally, optimum peel strength obtained when polyol/monomeric diol ratio was 8 : 2.
Polyester/melamine cured coatings had been used for pre-primed coatings and pre-coated metal coatings, because it has good mechanical, chemical properties, and mar resistance. But it has weak points such as stiffness and low formability for making automotive components. Polyester had been synthesized using polycarbonate diol of long alkyl chain which can improve flexibility and formability which is one of the important factors for pre-coated steel sheets (PCM). In this study, strain and tensile strength were examined by the tensile test and formability was examined by the drawing test. Also, Those polyester resins were also measured by DMA to verify flexibility of cured coatings.
The crystallization behaviours of poly(ethylene terephthalate) modified by 1, 3-propane diol, 1, 5-pentane diol, 1, 6-hexane diol, or poly(ethylene glycol) of molecular weight 300 as a third component were studied by isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization. When the content of the third diol was about 4 mol %, the isothermal crystallization rate at the same supercooling below the melting temperature and the nonisothermal crystallization rate at the same overheating above the glass transition temperature were increased more by the shorter flexible diol unit. On the contrary the nonisothermal crystallization rate at the same supercooling below the melting temperature was increased more by the longer flexible diol unit.
Benzoic acid polyester/lactone polyol were synthesized by polycaprolactone 0201 as diol, trimethylolpropane as triol, adipic acid as dibasic acid, and benzoic acid as monobasic acid. Polyisocyanate prepolymer Desmodur N-100 of HDI-biuret type was used in this study. Two-component polyurethane coatings were prepared by blending benzoic acid polyester/polycaprolactone, polyisocyanate, wetting/dispersing agent, white pigment, and flowing agent. Various properties were examined on the film coated with the prepared polyurethane. They showed excellent physical properties such as abrasion resistance, accelerated weathering resistance, and yellowness index. They also showed good physical properties such as flexibility, impact resistance, 60$^{\circ}$ specular gloss, cross hatch adhesion, hydrocarbon resistance, and lightness index difference. Hardness of coating showed a little poor character. The introduction of polycaprolactone 0201 as diol in the polyurethane coatings improved the hydrocarbon resistance, impact resistance, and flexibility of coatings. According to the drying and curing behavior with the contents of benzoic acid, they seem to have reasonable coating properties such as drying time of 2 to 4 hours and pot-life time of 20 to 37 hours.
Poly(${\epsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) diol, with good biodegradation and biocompatibility, is one of the widely used soft segments (SSs) in composing bio-polyester-urethanes (Bio-PUs), which show great potential in both biomedical and tissue engineering applications. Properties of Bio-PUs are tunable by combining SS monomers with different molecular weights, structures, modifications, and ratio of components. Although numbers of research have reported many Bio-PUs properties, few studies have been done at the molecular scale. In this study, we use molecular dynamic (MD) simulation to construct atomistic models for two commonly used PCL diol SSs with different molecular weights 1247.58 Da and 1932.42 Da. We compare the simulation results by using two widely used classical force fields for organic molecules: Consistent Valence Force Field (CVFF) and CHARMM General Force Field (CGenFF), and discuss the validity and accuracy. Melt density, volume, polymer conformations, transition temperature, and mechanical properties of PCL diols are calculated and compared with experiments. Our results show that both force fields provide accurate predictions on the properties of PCL diol system at the molecular scale and could help the design of future Bio-PUs.
Waterborne polyurethane dispersions (WPUD) were prepared by poly(ethylene glycol) adipate as the polyester type, ${\alpha},{\omega}-hydroxyalkyl$ terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-diol) as the polysiloxane type, hexamethylene diisocyanate, and isophorone diisocyanate, dimethylol propionic acid. The effects of PDMS-diol contents on the particle size, thermal and surface properties of WPUD were investigated. The structures of the synthesized WPUD were confirmed using by FT-IR. The surface, thermal and mechanical properties were investigated by measuring the contact angles, DSC, TGA and UTM. As PDMS-diol contents increased, the particle size, the contact angle, and the elongation was increased, while the tensile strength was decreased. Also the thermal stabilities of the synthesised WPUD were increased as PDMS-diol contents increased.
Polyurethanes(PUs) were synthesized by reaction of isophorone diisocyanate, acetylbutyl citrate, and 3 types of polycaprolactone diol. Their structures were confirmed by FT-IR and NMR spectrometer. And, their thermal and mechanical properties were measured by TGA ud UTM. The effective network chain lengths ($\bar{M}_c$), measured by compressive modulus apparatus, were about $8000\~24000$ g/mol. As crosslinking density and amount of hard segment increased, tensile strength increased and elongation decreased. As the crosslinking density of PUs increased, thermal property inproved. When the ratio of NCO/OH is 1.1, maximum crosslinking density was achieved.

In this study DMT(Dimethylterephthalate), NDC(Dimethyl-2, 6-Naphthalene Dicarboxylate) were used to synthesize polyester polyol which shows enhanced storage stability, improved flame retardancy, and good compressive strength. If DMT and NDC react respectively with DEG(Diethylene Glycol) which is kind of linear diol, the obtained polyester polyols tend to crystallize easily after the reaction. In case of DMT, PA(Phthalic Anhydride) which has asymmetric structure was introduced to retard the crystallization. In case of NDC, DPG(Dipropylene Glycol) which has an methyl side chain was introduced to prevent the crystallization. It was found that to introduce DPG was much more effective method to prevent the crystallization than PA. NDC and DMT were reacted together with DPG for various compositions of NDC:DMT(8:2, 6:4, 4:6 mol ratio). The obtained NDC-DMT-DPG based polyester polyol showed improved flame retardancy, and good compressive strength with increasing the content of NDC.
Aliphatic polyester, especially poly(butylene adipate)(PBA), is quite biodegradable and one of the most promising polymer materials to be commercialized. Bis(4-hydroxybutyl) adipate (BHBA) formation stage is the first principal process in the production of PBA from adipic acid (AA) and 1,4-butane diol (BD). In this study, we investigated for the effective production of Bis(4-hydroxybutyl) adipate (BHBA), effects of molar ratio of adipic acid (AA) to 1,4-butane diol (BD), catalyst (tetrabutyl titanate, TBT) concentration, and temperature on the reaction rate of esterification between AA and BD were investigated. Initial reaction rate of the esterification decreased with increasing molar ratio of AA to BD and reaction temperature, whereas reaction constant increased with increase in catalyst-concentration. Activation energy values for catalyzed and uncatalyzed esterifications were 198.5 and 94.8 kJ/mol, respectively.
