Using a simple continuous optical technique, coupled with measurements of zeta potential, the effects of polyelectrolyte dosage, kaoline particles and pH on flocculation of humic acid by several cationic polyelectrolytes, have been examined. The charge density of a polyelectolyte is important in determining the optimum dosage and in the removal of humic acid. The optimum dosage is less for the polyelectrolytes of higher charge density and is the same regardless of the presence of kaoline particles of different turbidity. At the dosage, the removal of humic acid is higher for the polyelectrolytes of higher charge density and the zeta potential of humic acid approaches to near zero, With increasing pH of humic acid, the optimum dosage increases and the flocculation index value obtained at the dosage decreases in the following pH 7 > pH 5 > pH 9, regardless of polyelectrolytes.

To find a practical application approach of polyelectrolyte multilayering (PEM) on inorganic filler, we introduced PEM process without washing step and investigated the effect of shear condition on the washless PEM treatment of ground calcium carbonate (GCC). Washless multilayering on GCC was conducted under various shear conditions such as stirring, homogenization, and ultrasonication. Highly charged polyelectrolytes combination of polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and poly sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (PSS) and low charged polyelectrolytes combination with cationic starch and anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) were compared. In the case of highly charged polyelectrolytes combination, shear conditions did not affect the zeta potential and the particle size of treated GCC. However, the modified GCC particles with low charged polyelectrolytes were more dispersed under higher shear condition while maintaining the zeta potential. In addition, GCC was successfully modified through laboratory inline washless polyelectrolyte multilayering system which consists of homogenizers and pumps.
By applying a configurational-bias Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm, priority simulation results regarding the conformation of non-dilute polyelectrolytes in solvents are obtained. Solutions of freely-jointed chains are considered, and a new method termed strandwise configurational-bias sampling is developed so as to effectively overcome a difficulty on the transfer of polymer chains. The structure factors of polyelectrolytes in the bulk as well as in the confined space are estimated with variations of the polymer charge density.

The effects of polyelectrolytes and enzyme, alone and in combination, were investigated in OCC recycling system. Four types of the polyelectrolytes based on acrylamide, cationic and anionic monomers were applied to the enzyme-treated KOCC stock to improve the strength and drainage properties of testliner. The polyelectrolytes used in this work were designed in terms of molecular weight and charge density. The water conditions used for recycling were also varied. The results showed that the hydrolytic action of enzyme gave reduced surface area and amorphous region of fiber, and as a result, the cationic polymer was lost apparently its flocculating power due to the reduced bonding site of fiber surface. When the hardness and conductivity of water had been controlled to the conditins of OCC paper mill, the application of amphoteric polyelectrolyte to the enzyme-treated recycled stock was the most effective with respect to the strength and drainage properties of testliner.
We have prepared new polyelectrolytes containing trialkoxysilyl groups by copolymerizing 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSPM) with either [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride (METAC), [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl propyl ammonium bromide (MEDPAB), or [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride (AETAC). The copolymers TSPM/METAC, TSPM/MEDPAB, and TSPM/METAC having compositions of 15/85, 10/90, and 5/95, respectively, were self-crosslinkable polyelectrolytes that possess humidity-sensitive properties. We measured the impedances of the copolymers at various relative humidities (RHs) and found that the resistance was dependent on the content of METAC, MEDPAB, or AETAC. The impedance changed from 10$\^$7/ $\Omega$ at 20% RH to 10$^3$$\Omega$ at 95% RH, which is quite a suitable range for a humidity sensor that is to be utilized at ambient humidity. We also performed tests of the materials temperature dependence, hysteresis, response time, and water durability.
Polyelectrolyte titration, which was called colloid titration is based on the stoichiometric reaction between oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, This can be used, for instance, to determine the charge density of a cationic polyelectrolyte, using an anionic polyelectrolyte of known charge density, such as potassium polyvinyl sulfate (PPVS). The technique requires a suitable method of end-point detection and there are several possibilities. In this work, two methods have been investigated: visual titrimetry based on the color change of a cationic dye (o-toluidine blue, o-Tb) and spectrophotometry based on the absorbance change corresponding to the color change of the same dye. These have been applied to several cationic polyelectrolytes with different charge density and molecular weight. In all cases, the cationic charge was due to quaternary nitrogen groups. In the case of cationic dye, it was shown that the sharpness depends on the charge density of cationic polyelectrolyte. With the polyelectrolytes of lower charge density, the binding to PPVS is weaker and binding of the dye to PPVS can occur before all of the polyelectrolyte charge has been neutralized. However, by carrying out titrations at several polyelectrolyte concentrations, good linear relationships were found, from which reliable charge density values could be derived. Effects of pH and ionic strength were also briefly investigated. For cationic polyelectrolytes (copolymers of acrylamide and dimethylaminoethy] acrylate), there was some loss of charge at higher pH values, probably as a result of hydrolysis. Increasing ionic strength causes a less distinct color change of o-Tb, as a result of weaker electrostatic interactions.

The reduction of energy consumption in papermaking process has been considered as one of the major issue in the paper technology. The energy efficiency of paper mill becomes more significant for the mill which manufacture the board grade products such as linerboard with recycled paper such as OCC. The application of lignocellulose spacer to the board grade paper stock would be the feasible solution by increasing the paper bulk and the drying efficiency. The major defects originated from the application of the lignocellulose spacer could be the loss of strength properties. In this study, the ways for improving the strength properties of the spacer-added linerboard were suggested and evaluated. The effects of the addition of various types polyelectrolytes were tested and the different methods of polyelectrolytes were applied for finding the efficient way. The pretreatments of lignocellulose spacer with the polyelectrolytes during wood spacer hydration resulted in the higher strength properties than the typical application method such as the addition to the mixed stock. Multilayer treatments of the spacer with polyelectrolytes were also evaluated and leaded to the higher strength properties with the similar bulk improvement.
Since polyelectrolytes have been used as conditioners, conventionally only a single polyelectrolyte has been added for sludge conditioning. However, the amount of polyelectrolyte needed for optimal conditioning of sludge is very critical. Overdosing reduces the sludge dewaterbility. In this experimental study, sludge conditioning with single or dual polyelectrolyte was conducted to avoid problems associated with overdosing. Single polyelectrolyte conditioning was conducted by one of cationic, nonionic, and anionic polyelectrolytes. The dual polyelectrolyte conditioning was performed by adding one polyelectrolyte and another one in sequence. The dewaterbility of sludges were measured by SRF(specific resistance to filtration), TTF(time to filter), CST(capillary suction time) respectively. Additionally, parameters such as turbidity, zeta potential, viscosity of conditioned sludges or supematant were measured to evaluate the changed characteristics of sludge by addition of polyelectrolytes. From the experiment results, it was concluded that single polyelectrolyte conditioning had a high probability of overdosing, whereas dual polyelectrolyte conditioning resulted in a better dewaterbility and less chance of overdosing. But, it was also found that dosing sequence in dual conditioning was very important according to the characteristics of sludge. Parameters such as viscosity, turbidity, zeta potential were found to be useful as a means of evaluating sludge dewaterbility.
The rheological properties of highly concentrated Ag nano sol depending on particle size were studied. The Ag nano sol was prepared by reducing the Ag ion in aqueous solution. The size of Ag nano particle was controlled by two steps of nucleation and growth, and the thickness of adsorption layer was varied by molecular weight of polyelectrolytes. The polyelectrolytes acted as not only ionic complex agent in ionic state and but also dispersant after formation of Ag nano sol. The effective volume was controlled by combination of varying the molecular weight of polyelectrolytes and the size Ag nano sol. The particle size and the viscosity of nano sol were characterized by particle size analyzer, HR-TEM and cone & plate viscometer. It was found that the 10 nm and 40 nm-sized Ag nano sols were prepared by controlling the nucleation and growth steps, respectively. Finally, we could prepare highly concentrated Ag nano sol over 50 wt%.

LbL multilayering technology introduced by Decher is a nano technique that a substrate surface is layered by the successive deposition of polyelectrolytes with positive and negative charge. We investigated the electrochemical properties of LbL multilayered pulp fibers with poly-DADMAC and PSS. Three types of pulp-Hw-BKP, BCTMP and KOCC- were treated with polyelectrolytes. Zeta potentials of multilayered fibers ranged from +30 mV to +40 mV, depending on the intial zeta potential of pulp fibers and fines content. All kinds of pulp which were examined in this study, however, showed a similar zeta potential of -35 mV after layering with PSS. To obtain pulp fiber with a uniform and stable zeta potential, BCTMP and KOCC pulp fibers should be multilayered above 5 times. The addition level of polyelectrolytes had little influence on the zeta potential of pulp fibers.
