  • Activated carbon nanofibers (ACNF) were prepared from polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based nanofibers using $CO_2$ activation methods with varying activation process times. The surface and structural characteristics of the ACNF were observed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. $N_2$ adsorption isotherm characteristics at 77 K were confirmed by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Dubinin-Radushkevich equations. As experimental results, many holes or cavernous structures were found on the fiber surfaces after the $CO_2$ activation as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Specific surface areas and pore volumes of the prepared ACNFs were enhanced within a range of 10 to 30 min of activation times. Performance of the porous PAN-based nanofibers as an electrode for electrical double layer capacitors was evaluated in terms of the activation conditions.

  • The influences of various carbonization temperatures on electrical resistivity and morphologies of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based nanofiber webs were studied. The diameter size distribution and morphologies of the nanofiber webs were observed by a scanning electron microscope. The electrical resistivity behaviors of the webs were evaluated by a volume resistivity tester. From the results, the volume resistivity of the carbon webs was ranged from $5.1{\times}10^{-1}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ to $3.0{\times}10^{-2}\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, and the average diameter of the fiber webs was varied in the range of 310 to 160 nm with increasing the carbonization temperature. These results could be explained that the graphitic region of carbon webs was formed after carbonization at high temperatures. And the amorphous structure of polymeric fiber webs was significantly changed to the graphitic crystalline, resulting in shrinking the size of fiber diameters.

  • The melting behavior of hydrated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and the rheological properties of hydrated PAN melt were investigated using DSC md modified capillary rheometer. With increasing the water content, Tm of the hydrated PAN was rapidly decreased and finally levelled off above a critical water content. However, the melt viscosity was further decreased even above the critical water content. The hydrated PAN melt showed a typical shear thinning behavior. In arrhenius plot, when the hydrated PAN melt was supercooled, it exhibited a different dependency on temperature from that above melting temperature.

  • For polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon fiber (CF) process, we developed a lab scale wet spinning line and a continuous tailor-made stabilization system with ten columns for controlling temperature profile. PAN precursor was spun with a different spinning rate. PAN spun fibers were stabilized with a total duration of 45 to 110 min at a given temperature profile. Furthermore, a stabilization temperature profile was varied with the last column temperature from 230 to $275^{\circ}C$. Stabilized fibers were carbonized in nitrogen atmosphere at $1200^{\circ}C$ in a furnace. Morphologies of spun and CFs were observed using optical and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Tensile properties of resulting CFs were measured. The results revealed that process conditions such as spinning rate, stabilization time, and temperature profile affect microstructure and tensile properties of CFs significantly.

  • In this study, the effect of high-energy proton irradiation on the optical properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) films was investigated. PAN thin films spin-coated on a substrate were irradiated 150 keV proton ions at various fluences. The changes in the chemical structure and optical properties were investigated by FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results of the FT-IR analysis revealed that the cyclization reaction took place by proton irradiation and the degree of cyclization increased with an increasing fluence. Based on the UV-vis analysis, the optical band gap of PAN decreased from 2.84 to 2.52 eV with an increasing fluence due to the formation of carbon clusters by proton irradiation. In addition, the number of carbon atoms per carbon cluster and the number of carbon atoms per conjugation length were found to be increased with an increasing fluence.

  • In this study, a selective layer of poly styrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was formed by layer-by-layer method onto a porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) hollow fiber membrane as the suppoter membrane. The salting out method was used by adding Mg salt to the coating solution. Several experimental conditions of the ionic strength, polymer concentration, and coating time were investigated, and the flux and rejection were measured at the operating pressure of 2 atm for 100 mg/L of NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ as the feed solution. The membranes coated with PSSA 20,000 ppm, coating time 3 minutes, ionic strength 1.0, PEI 30,000 ppm, coating time 1 minute, and ionic strength 0.1 were observed the best. In the 100 ppm NaCl, $MgCl_2$, and $CaSO_4$ feed solutions, the flux of 20.4, 19.4, and 18.7 LMH, and the rejection of 67, 90, and 66.6%, respectively.

  • In this study, we synthesized Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) thin films using a simple annealing process in the solid phase. The synthetic conditions were systematically controlled and optimized by varying the concentration of the Au salt solution and the annealing temperature. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed their chemical state, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) verified the successful synthesis, size, and density of AuNPs. Au nanoparticles were generated from the thermal decomposition of the Au salt and stabilized during the cyclization of the PAN matrix. For actual device applications, previous synthetic techniques have required the synthesis of AuNPs in a liquid phase and an additional process to form the thin film layer, such as spin-coating, dip-coating, Langmuir-Blodgett, or high vacuum deposition. In contrast, our one-step synthesis could produce gold nanoparticles from the Au salt contained in a solid matrix with an easy heat treatment. The PAN:AuNPs composite was used as the charge trap layer of an organic nano-floating gate memory (ONFGM). The memory devices exhibited a high on/off ratio (over $10^6$), large hysteresis windows (76.7 V), and a stable endurance performance (>3000 cycles), indicating that our stabilized PAN:AuNPs composite film is a potential charge trap medium for next generation organic nano-floating gate memory transistors.

  • Nanomaterials possess unique mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. They are small, and have an ultrahigh surface area, making them suitable for air filter applications. Electrospinning has been recognized as an efficient technique for fabricating polymer nanofibers. In order to determine the optimum manufacturing conditions, the effects of several electrospinning process parameters on the diameter, orientation, and distribution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber are analyzed. To improve interlaminar fracture toughness and suppress delamination in the form of laminated non-woven fibers by using a heat roller, the performances of filter efficiency and pressure drop achieved with PAN nanofiber air filter are evaluated experimentally.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) incorporated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanofibers were synthesized using electronspinning method. Effects of polymer concentration and applied voltage on the synthesis of PAN and PMMA nanofibers were systematically investigated. The structural characterization of PAN/MWCNTs and PMMA/MWCNTs composited nanofibers synthesized as a function of the MWCNTs concentration was performed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. 5 wt% MWCNTs incorporated PAN and PMMA electrospun nanofiber exhibit best strength and stiffness.
