  • Photocyclizable poly(cinnam-4'-yl methyl methacrylate) derivatives bearing methoxy benzene (PMCMMA), anthracene (PACMMA), and coumarin (PCCMMA) have been synthesized via Heck type reaction. Three different types of polymers are photoreactable usin g linearly polarized UV light and applicable as liquid crystal alignment layer. Anthracence and coumarin containing polymers (PACMMA, PCCMMA) have better thermal stability than PMCMMA. This observation may be attributed to the glass transition temperature elevation due to the bulky size and another photocrosslinking site provided by anthracene or coumarin group.

  • Some photopolymer, poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate)(PVCiA) was synthesized by esterification of polymer(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) with monochloroacetic acid, followed by reaction poly(vinyl monochloroacetate)(PVAhA) and potassium cinnamate. When esterification of PVA with monochloroacetic acid was reacted in the dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO), in the synthesis of PVChA, it is very good yield and the successive cinnamoyl acetoxyl esterification of PVCiA can be successfully synthesized. But PVCiA is low photosensitive polymer if net added photosensitizing dyes. Here, we synthesized photosensitizing dyes.

  • Poly(vinyl cinnamate) had excellent resolution and no dark reaction and high etch resistent. But is was developed in polar solvent. A aqueous-photopolymer was synthesised for improvment of developability. Poly(vinyl cinnamoyl acetate)(PVCiA) and aqueous-PVCiA(PVCiA-s) was prepared and was characterized with H-NMR. The characteristic of sensitivity and developablity of coating was investigated by Grayscale method.

  • Thin films of poly(vinyl cinnamate) (PVCi) were prepared on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass and silicon substrates by conventional spin coating and subsequent drying process. The thicknesses of the films ranged 50-120 nm. The films' surface was treated by rubbing, ultraviolet exposure or their combinations in various ways with changing rubbing strength and exposure dose. These films were examined in detail in the aspects of surface morphology and chain orientation. Further, the anchoring and orientation behaviors of liquid crystals on the film surfaces were investigated. All the results will be discussed in detail.

Indolization of 3-trifluoromethylphenyl-hydrazine formed 4- and 6-substituted indoles, the rate of 4- and 6-substituted indoles is close to unity. Absorption's coefficient of 1,3-bis(4-trifluoromethyl-1,3,3-trimethylindol) squarylium dye(TFSQ) is 7.57$\times$10\ulcorner, PVCiA added with TFSQ(3%) was highly sensitized six times than not added.

  • The new phto-alignment material PMI5CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy) cinamate]porpyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacrylate}, was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO)characteristics in the vertical-aligned(VA) liquid crystal display (LCD) photo-aligned on the photopolymer surface were studied. Excellent Voltage-transmittance(V-T) characteristics in the VA-LCD photoaligned with polarized UV exposure of oblique direction on the pohotopolymer surface for 1 min can be achieve. The transmittance of the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface decreased with increasing UV exposure time. We suggest that decrease of transmittance in the VA-LCD photoaligned on the photopolymer surface is attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkage in the photodimerized cinnamate structure with increasing UV exposure time.

  • We investigated a new method for patterning organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) using a photopatternable conducting polymer nanocomposite, consisting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that had been modified with a photoreactive cinnamate group, to form P3HT-AuNP-CI. We found that the addition of the cinnamate group to the nanoparticle surface assisted the preparation of a solvent-resistive semiconducting film and preserved the P3HT ordering, which was interrupted by Au-P3HT interactions, as well as provided UV-controllable electrical properties. The P3HT-AuNPs-CI films could be microscale-patterned via a UV crosslinking photoreaction, represented as a promising photopatternable semiconductor material for use in advanced applications, with tunable electrical properties for fabrication of sub-micron and microscale electronic devices.

  • Fabrication of a graded index profile was possible via photochemical reaction of cinnamoyl groups with 350 nm wavelength UV light to form crosslinked structures. Such structural change may induce the change in the refractive index. In order to generate graded index profile in the PMMA polymer optical fiber (POF) with cinnamoyl groups by photochemistry, a methyl methacrylate monomer containing a cinnamoyl functional group in the side chain were prepared. This monomer was then copolymerized with methyl methacrylate with various compositions not only to utilize advantages of poly(methyl methacrylate) but also to overcome the drawbacks of the cinnamate homopolymer. Changes of refractive indices were investigated with various contents of cinnamoyl group and varying irradiation time. Large change in the refractive index (${\Delta}{\approx}0.01$) and its proper profile shape ($g{\approx}2.2$) can be obtained by changing irradiation time.
