Han River Management Policy (한강수질의 관리방안)

  • Among the rivers in Korea, the Han River is the largest, most important one, which runs through the Seoul metropolitan region in the west toward the yellow sea. In the Han River basin there live as many as 17.1 mil. people including appr, 11 mil, citizens in Seoul. The Seoul Metropolitan region, already containing appr. 40% of the nation's total populating, expectedly poses an ever-growing polluting burden to the Han River. Due to Korea's vigorous industrialization and heavy urbanization in the past quarter century, water pollution was observed to be increasing in the Han River until the mid-1980's, but thereafter the Han River began to improve little by little by virtue of the government's massive investment and all-out efforts in water preservation. Public awareness on the importance of environmental protection is increasing unprecedentedly. With a view to meeting people's growing demand for clean water and pleasant environment, the government established the "Comprehensive Mid-Term Environmental Conservation Plan" (1992∼1993) in 1991. According to the plan, 1,315 bil.won(1.7 bil.us$ ) is to be poured into the Han River Basin to install 113 water pollutant abatement plants including 43 treatment facilities. To successfully cope with the future's challenging need for the environmentally sound sustainable development, a variety of measures and an array of policies are going to be incorporated with emphasis on, -redistributing such polluting sources as population and industries -tightening control of the water pollutant discharge -restricting the pollution-accompanying land use -enhancing the assimilation capacity of the river -stirring up the public awareness and participation in the environment protection We hopefully anticipate that with those e(forts the Han River will improve as drawn in the attached "1996's Envisioned Han River Quality".

  • Since Industrial Revolution, the sudden industrialization and population explosion have brought about a serious environmental pollution on the air of the earth, the quality of water and the soil, and the greenhouse effect by the destruction of the ozone layer and the greenhouse gas, the organism diversity decline, the desertification by the ruining of woods and the overall global environmental pollution such as the contamination of the ocean and rivers have been come to the front. So the new recognition on the environment is being spreaded in construction business and the efforts for certification acquisition of ISO 14000 being followed by ISO 9000 are progressing, Accordingly, with an example of H Company where integration system is built so that it can minimize the efforts and cost at the construction of the management system, operation and management after the fact, this paper shall suggest the practical scheme of 3 steps through a study to integrate both existing quality management system and new environmental management system. As the integration system of the quality and environment which is constructed by this method is executed, the number of the established and managed document is cut by about a third and so the disorder to encounter between these documents is prevented and unnecessary efforts is reduced in constructing a system, consequently the efficiency of the system is accomplished. Also as the dualization of quality management system and environmental management system additionally needs more men and money after certification acquisition, the non-construction of the integration system may give rise to a cause to aggravate the burden of the company and hereafter when a new system is imported, it may be very difficult to integrate the system. This system integration enables a efficient and effective system to be constructed , operated , and managed after the fact.

  • Growing pollution due to industrialization leads to difficulties in survival of mankind. Generation of clean water from wastewater by membrane separation process is emerging cost efficient technology. Membrane prepared from renewable resources are in lots of demand to reduce burden on synthetic polymers which is one of the source of environmental pollution. Bacterial cellulose (BC) is very pure and distinct form of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). Nanopapers prepared from CNF are used ad ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membrane for different applications. High crystallinity of BC gives rise to excellent mechanical property, an essential criterion for wastewater treatment membrane. In this review, BC based membrane for application in dye, oil, heavy metal and chemical removal from wastewater is discussed.

  • In the modern industrial society, huge amount of organic wastes have exceeded the society's self-cleaning capability, caused pollution of the whole environment, including water quality, soil, and the air, and become a big burden of waste treatment. Moreover, the emission of green house gases brought by the continual combustion of fossil fuels has facilitated the global warming. The simultaneous effect of initial and operational pH on $H_2$ yield was expressed using mathematical equation and optimized. The optimal initial and cultivation pH was 7.50 and 6.01, respectively. Addition of livestock wastewater to food waste substantially decreased the amount of alkali requirement and also improved the $H_2$ fermentation performance.

  • In present, most of metallic structures(gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) are running parallel with subway and power line in seoul. Moreover subway system and power line make a stray current due to electrical corrosion on metallic structures. The owner of metallic structures has a burden of responsibility for the protection of corrosion and the prevention against big accident such as gas explosion or soil pollution and so on. So, they have to measure and analyze the data about P/S(Pipe to Soil) potential due to stray current of subway system. In this paper, results of development about Real-time Wireless Remote Monitoring System for Stray Current of Subway System are presented.

  • In accordance with changes in life style, people's desire to eat out is getting changed in their preferring factors from whether they can buy food they want to eat fast and easily to mood of the dining space, content and quality of service, hygiene condition of restaurant, quiet location and surrounding circumstance, and discount coupon and price destruction. In addition, consumers who begin to recognize the seriousness of environmental pollution prefer health-oriented food. On the other hand, excessive presence of competitors, growing personnel expense, increasing expenditure in accordance with swelling price of rent and material expenditure, increase of tax burden, decrease of income because of credit card service charge and high expected level by consumers make it difficult for restaurant's owners to manage restaurant business. Therefore, this study purposes to establish development of menu from the consumer's and the supplier's point of view and propose how to develop menu aiming at convenience, health and diversity.

Environment and Health: An Overview of Current Trends at WHO and OECD (국제기구의 환경보건 분야 동향)

  • Background: Environmental hazards are responsible for as much as a quarter of the total world-wide burden of disease. Therefore, appropriate management of environmental hazards is a critical part of the effort to improve human health. This review aims to summarize current issues, topics, and programs at international institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in the area of environmental health. Results: The WHO European Center for Environmental Health (ECEH) plays a significant role in implementing environmental health policies and also takes the lead in related issues in Europe. It has developed an Environmental Health Information System and environmental health inequality indicators. In the environmental health area, the OECD focuses most on chemical management programs. It foresees that air pollution and chemical risk management will become the leading environmental health issues if appropriate measures are not taken. Several topics were identified that require greater effort in Korea, including cancer as an environment-related disease, an environmental health information system, and environmental health inequality issues. Conclusions: More active roles are expected from Korea in international societies, in part because of the introduction of the Environmental Health Act of 2008, and active involvement in related activities in WHO WPRO/SEARO. Understanding recent developments and concerns at major international organizations like WHO and the OECD will assist in the implementation of effective international collaboration and the identification of a better strategies for improving environmental health performances in Korea.
