  • Indoor air quality is the dominant contributor to total personal exposure because most people spend a majority of their time indoors. Especially exposure to indoor air can potentially pose a greater threat than exposure to ambient air when indoor environments have sources of contaminants. In this study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and formaldehyde (HCHO) within newly constructed apartment have been determined in 27 houses of apartment in Seoul from December 2004 to March 2005. The measured indoor air pollutants were HCHO, volatile organic compounds including benzene, toluene, styrene, xylene, ethylbenzene and sampled on the standard method of Ministry of Environment in Korea. The indoor levels for benzene, xylene, toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene, and HCHO have significant increase trend after 5 hours closing of windows and doors. Levels of measured air pollutants concentrations between living rooms and bedrooms have not shown significant difference. Spearman correlation coefficient among the measured air pollutants ranged from 0.303 to 0.946, indicating similar source in building materials.

  • To research the cause of the low and the poor visibility phenomena of Kimhae international airpot statistically, we analyzed the field routine data for the last five years from 1985 to 1989. The poor visibilities below 1km, 3km, and 5km usually occurred at about 6 o'clock in the morning under the condition of calm or light wind from south to southwest direction, and lasted for from 1 to 3 hours. they were caused by the radiative cooling and the inflow of moisture from the South Sea. The frequency of th low visibility(below 9km) recorded 48.1% a year. And the low visibility below 8km with relative humidity below 70% often occurred in the case of southeast, southwest, and northwest wind. And it reveals a peak at 11:00 a.m.. It is supposed to be caused by the pollutants flowing from the neighbouring industrila complex, Sasang, Jangnim and by the photochemical reaction. And, when the industrial direction from Kimhae international airport, the visibility and the air pollution may become worse and worse by the increased pollutants.

  • This paper presents tile modeling of non-point source pollutants runoff and its desirable water environmental management to closed waterbody. To obtain spatially distributed environmental information, fro have used contour data to extract stream channels automatically and to divide networks of watershed. A Quasi Digital Elevation Model (DEM) has been developed, validated, and adopted to estimate the runoff of total nitrogen pollutant from watershed. The GIS-linked model can be applied effectively to the non-point source pollutants from watersheds considering water conditions in receiving waters. It will be useful to manage water environment in receiving waters.

  • In this paper, in order to set up the management system of water quality environment in Gwangyang Bay, the cluster analysis of water quality environment, the estimation of inflowing pollutant loads and residence time of pollutants in this bay was carried out. The Gwangyang Bay was divided into eight sea areas by cluster analysis and spatio-temporal change of water quality. The river discharges in the Bay were calculated about $11,681{\times}103m^3/day$ from the numerical simulation by Tank model. In addition, inflowing pollutant loads of COD, SS, TN, TP, DIN and DIP in Gwangyang Bay were estimated at 398 ton-COD/day, 2,846 ton-SS/day, 195 ton-TN/day, 5 ton-TP/day, 126 ton-DIN/day and 3 ton-DIP/day, respectively. Moreover, residence times of COD, TN and TP in the Bay was estimated at 6 days-COD, 20 days-TN and 195 days-TP, respectively in the dry season, and 3 days-COD, 6 days-TN and 21 days- TP, respectively, in the flood season. The central part of Gwangyang Bay (Region IV) has the longest residence time of overall pollutants.

  • Purpose: With the increasing of public-use facilities, there has been a growing concern over Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) of public-use facilities. Because the facilities are easy to be exposed to indoor air pollutants, they needs to be periodically managed the IAQ. Methods: In this study, indoor air pollutant concentrations of 24 vulnerable facilities were measured and compared. The measurements were conducted for pollutants which are defined in 'IAQ Control In Public-Use Facilities, etc. Act'. We took two measurements, the first was carried out in summer and the second was proceeded in winter. We analyzed the values according to the type of facilities and pollutants. Results: There was a difference in pollutant concentrations by the season and in occurrence characteristics by the measurement spot. Therefore, we need to manage pollutant concentrations by characteristics of occurrence. Implications: Based on the comparative analysis of pollutant concentrations, we suggested cause and improvement strategies for IAQ management of Vulnerable facilities.

  • In order to investigate the abundance and transboundary fluxes of air pollutants over the Yellow Sea, airborne measurements were made aboard the SF-600 aircraft (Pan-Asia Engineering) in March, 1996. The data presented in this paper are preliminary results and airborne experiment will be carried out until 1999. The vertical profile of relevant meteorological parameters such as temperature, water vapor, wind direction and wind speed were also observed at Taean. Mixing layer height was about 1000~1100m during the flights. The SO$_2$ and NO$_{x}$ concentrations were 3~6 ppb and 5~7 ppb below 1000 m, within 1 ppb and 3~5 ppb at 1000~2000m, respectively. Backward trajectory analyses were also carried out. A mathematical method by Lelieveld et al.(1989) was used to estimate the flux of air pollutants through the planetary boundary layer of Yellow Sea area. Transboundary fluxes were calculated using the measurement results with respect to the pollutants concentration, depth of the planetary boundary layer, wind speed and wind direction. The estimated transboundary flux of SO$_2$through the western boundary of Korea was about 39~42 tons/hour.r.

  • The annular denuder system(ADS) was used to determine characteristics of acidic air pollutants and $PM_{2.5}$ species in Seoul-metropolitan areas. All measurements were done simultaneously in downtown(Kwanghwamun, Mullae, Chamshil, Ssangmun dongs) and outskirts(Puch n, Kuri cities) during four seasons. The samples were analyzed using ion chromatography for gas-phase matters(HCl, $HNO_2$, $HNO_3$ and $SO^2$) and particulate phase matters($Cl^-$, $NO^{2-}$, $NO_3^-$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $Na^+$, $NH_4^-$ and $Ca^{2+}$) and was measured fine particles($PM_{2.5}$). The seasonal mean concentrations of HCl, HNO2, HNO3 and SO2 in downtown and outskirt areas were very similar. All chemical species monitored from this study showed seasonal variations. Nitric acid(HNO3) and Nitrous acid(HNO2) were showed higher concentrations during the summer. $PM_{2.5}$, $SO_4^{2-}$, $NH_4^-$, $NO_3^-$ and $Cl^-$ in the particulate phase matters were higher levels during the winter months. The concentrations of these components were 54.8, 3.82, 2.49, 1.80 and 1.02$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively.
