  • There have been persistent civil appeals in Ansan area against the odor and aerosols emitted from nearby Banwol/Sihwa industrial complex. A fundamental solution for the good air quality has not been addressed yet in spite of the continuous counterplan to reduce odor emission. A systematic and scientific study is needed to examine the reason for the odor episode and to predict the impact coverage of odor pollution. An approach by computational simulation is considered to be adequate to investigate the transportation and the dispersion processes of air pollutants blown by sea breeze toward the coastal city, Ansan. This study has employed various dispersion models to simulate the transportation and the dispersion processes of odor pollutants by a local circulation between land/sea breeze using the data set of emission rates of odorous species from the Banwol/Sihwa industrial complex.

  • Deposition processes limit the life time of pollutants in the atmosphere and control the distance travelled before deposition. Thus the understanding about atmospheric deposition processes is essential for a proper assessment of the environmental impacts due to the anthropogenic pollutants. The dry deposition velocities are related to surface types, atmospheric stabilities, friction velocities, air pollutants and so on. In this study we simulated the dry deposition velocities of O3 in Pusan region. The calculated deposition velocities compared to the observed O3 data obtained during the summer of 1988 over a deciduous forest in Canada. The comparison showed that the model somewhat overpredicted deposition velocities for the average diurnal variations with maxima in daytime and minima in nighttime mostly due to the turbulence intensity.

  • To study the influences of the emission sources during lune 13∼15 1997 in Seoul, MESOPVFF II model has been used. The MESOPVFF II model includes terrain effects, chemical transformation and removal processes. Data of 20 surface meteorological stations and the upper air station on mid-west area in Korea were used as a DWM (Diagnostic Wind Model) input data. This model is likely to be applicable because the predicted SO2 concentration was well matched with measured 502 concentration in Seoul and Kyonggido. In generally air pollutants in Seoul have major influence on the other cities but the result of modeling appeared also air pollutants of the other cities influence on Seoul. Finally, in the case of calculating the air quality by diffusion model, the influences of air pollutants emitted in metropolitan area as well as the emission rate in modeling area should be considered.

  • In aqueous ecosystems, the level of toxicity is highly responsive dependant to multiple variables, including rainfall, sunlight, pH, adhesion, etc. Because Korea has particularly distinct wet and dry seasons, the toxicity of pollutants in rivers or streams is dependant on the sampling season and time. In order to examine the effects of rainfall on toxicity, sediment samples were collected from five sites along the Keumho river. It was found that Microtox toxicity levels were generally higher during the dry season than the wet season. It indicated that river pollutants are carried off more quickly by the water during the wet season. As a result, it was recommended that the point sources of pollutants of the Keumho river would be placed between KH3 (Paldalgyo) and KH4(Keumhogyo), KH4(Keumhogyo) and KH5(Dasa).

  • Mass balance and unit load of pollutants were investigated at paddy field area during irrigation periods in 1999 and 2000. The amounts of irrigation water during irrigation periods were 3,690mm in 1999 and 3,160mm in 2000. The concentration of surface outflow is not so high as that of irrigation because 44% of irrigation water discharge without entering the paddy plots. The unit loads of pollutants during irrigation periods were estimated 19.2kg/ha for T-N, 0.29kg/ha for T-P and 47.5kg/ha for COD.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate of emission factors of the air pollutants for the melting furnaces for the iron and steel industry. The result of this study is able to obtaine the emission factor of particulate matters (PM), sulfur dioxide. nitrogen oxides for melting furnace. The emission factors of each pollutants were as follows : - the emission factor varied between 6.13E-03~6.12E-01 kg/ton for PM -1.59E-01~2.45E+00kg/ton for $SO_2$ - 6.82E-02~6.88E-01 kg/ton for NOx, respectively. Analysis of the differences in the emission factors of ours and U.S. EPA's yielded the following results for the Wilcoxon method : p>0.05. The statistical analysis showed no differences in the our emission factors and U.S. EPA's

  • With the growing importance of GHG reduction, wood pellets are considered as a cheaper renewable energy and carbon neutral. On the other hand, there is a concern that the burning wood pellets may release even more air pollutants such as CO and VOCs. In this study, we analyzed the social costs of burning fuels including wood pellets and coals based on the unit calorific value. The social costs were calculated by sum of the import costs of the fuels and the emission costs of the air pollutants. The results showed that wood pellets are inferior to coals in the aspect of the social costs. It is necessary to improve the quality of the wood pellets and pellet boiler facilities for being used eco-friendly energy sources in the future. We suggest that the control facilities of CO and VOCs should be installed, if the control costs are lower than the pollution costs.

  • Characteristics of concentration of pollutants such as total nitrogen(T-N), total phosphorus(T-P) and chemical oxygen demand(COD) during dry days of $2002{\sim}2003$ were investigated for streamwater from a rural watershed. Water was sampled and discharge was measured at 5-days intervals at outlet of study area. The mean concentrations of pollutants in non-irrigation and irrigation period not significantly different. For increasing discharge in 2002, TN concentration increased but COD concentrations decreases.

  • In designing smoke-control system of rescue station in train tunnel, a purpose is to prevent a disaster by proposing the jet fan operation together with smoke-control curtain in tunnel fire. This study has investigated the relationship of the Heat Release Rate(HRR) and a adequate ventilation velocity to control the fire propagation in tunnel fire, and has improved the effect of the smoke-control curtain on preventing the flow of pollutants. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations with ST AR-CD(ver 3.24) were carried out on predicting the fire spreading and the flow of pollutants, considering jet fan operations and effect of smoke-control curtain. Our simulation domain is the full scale model of the 'DAEGWALLYEONG' 1st tunnel. The results represent that ventilation operation can control the fire spreading and pollutants effectively to prevent a disaster.

  • The ballast gravels are often contaminated by various pollutants, like diesel fuel, lubricants, and heavy metals. Especially, the gravels near the switching are apt to be polluted by the lubricant. Because this lubricant can pollute the soil of track, the contaminated ballast gravels should be cleaned immediately. In this study, a physical desorption method was used to remove the oil contaminants from the surface of the ballast gravels. Thermosetting resin was used as a media for physical remediation of ballast gravels. The total petroleum hydrocarbon of the gravels was monitored over time. In addition, scanning electron microscopic images were obtained to observe the removal of the oily pollutants from the surface of the gravels.
