Numerical study on the gaseous radioactive pollutant dispersion in urban area from the upstream wind: Impact of the urban morphology

  • The radioactive pollutant could migrate to the downstream urban area under the action of atmospheric dispersion due to the turbulent mixing under actual pollution accidents. A scenario in which radioactive contaminants from the upstream (for example, a nearshore nuclear power plant accident) migrates to the downstream urban blocks have been considered in this study. Numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are then conducted to investigate the effects of the urban morphology (building packing density and layout) on the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive pollutants in this scenario. The building packing density and structure can significantly affect urban areas' mean flow pattern and the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The flow pattern and the TKE distribution influence the radioactive pollution dispersion. It is found that the radioactive pollution at the urban canyons is significantly affected by the vertical transport at the canyon. A comparison of the distributions of radioactive and traditional non-radioactive pollutants is also provided.

입자추적모델을 이용한 마산만 북부 해역에서의 육상오염물질 확산 수치모의 (Numerical Simulation for Dispersion of Anthropogenic Pollutant in Northern Masan Bay using Particle Tracking Model)

  • To study the dispersion process and residence time of anthropogenic pollutant in Masan bay, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a particle tracking model, EFDC, is applied. Particle tracking model simulated the instantaneous release of particles emulating discharge from river and wastewater treatment plant to show the behaviour of pollutant in terms of water circulation and water exchange. Modelled outcomes for water circulation were in good agreement with tidal elevation and current data. The results of particle tracking model show that over half of particles released from northern Masan bay transport to out of area while the particles from Dukdong wastewater treatment plant transport to northern area. This meant pollution source from inside and outside of the northern area can affect water quality of northern Masan bay.

  • 본 논문은 GIS에 기반한 하천 네트워크에서 임의의 두 지점 사이의 우발적으로 유출된 오염물질의 이동과 거동을 모의하기 위해 새로이 개발된 모형인 ARPTM에 관해 기술한다. ARPTM 모형은 특히 ADCP자료로부터 계산된 하천의 동역학적인 계수인 종분산계수와 이송속도를 일차원 하천 이송-확산 모형에 적용하였다. ARPTM은 GIS 기술을 바탕으로 운영되도록 설계되어 자료의 준비에 있어 기존의 GIS 자료 및 기능들을 편리하게 이용할 수 있도록 하였고 효율적으로 모의 결과를 다양한 방식으로 도시하여 사용자들의 오염물질의 이동에 대한 이해의 편리를 도모하였다. ARPTM은 복잡한 하천 네트워크에서 오염물질의 유출지점으로부터 하류의 관심지점까지의 경로를 신속하게 계산하고 오염물질의 이송거리와 이송시간과 그리고 농도를 제공한다. ARPTM은 또한 자료의 제공 및 결과가 효율적으로 최근에 개발된 GIS에 기반한 Arc River 데이터베이스에 저장되도록 하여 궁극적으로 측정 자료, 모델링, 그리고 여러 사이버 툴을 통합하여 오염물질 이동을 시공간적으로 묘사하여 대단위 유역에서 오염물질 유출에 따른 경고시스템의 구축에 활용될 수 있다.

여수지역 대기확산의 수치 모사 -I. 지형의 영향- (Simulation of Atmospheric Dispersion over the Yosu Area -I. Terrain Effects-)

  • The atmospheric dispersion of a pollutant emitted from a hypothetical source located in the middle of the Yochon Industrial Estate was simulated by using the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS). Four horizontally nested grids were employed: the coarsest one covered the southern part of the Korean Peninsula including Mt. Chiri and the finest one covered the Yochon Industrial Estate and the surrounding area. Wind fields were initially assumed horizontally homogeneous with a wind speed of 4m/s, the average for the Yosu area, and were developed without both external forces and diurnal changes in order to investigate the terrain-induced phenomena. Wind directions that could emphasize the terrain effects on the pollutant transport and that could carry pollutants to a highly-popluated area were selected for the dispersion study. A pollutant was released for 24hours from a grid-base volume source after a 24-h blank run for developing the wind field. The dispersion study showed that the pollutant from the present source location did not directly affect the Yosu City, but showed high concentrations at locations behind the hills 5 to 6 km away from the source according to wind directions. When the wind speed was low, close to calm condition, the pollutant was detected at upstream locations 6 to 7 km from the source. In comparison with the results from the RAMS simulation, the Industrial Source Complex Short-Term Model(ISCST3) predicted a narrow dispersion that was sensitive to the wind direction. When the wind velocity was affected by the local environment, the ISCST3 calculation using that data also gave a lop-sided result, which was different from the distribution of the pollutant reproduced by RAMS.

중규모 국지순환에서 이산화황의 농도예측에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Prediction of SO2 Concentration in local Circulation of Mesoscale)

  • The Characteristics of atmospheric flow and dispersion of air pollutants in the mountainous coastal area were studied using two-dimensional model by the combination of land-sea breezes and transport. The pollutants emitted into the simulated wind field in considering with the mesoscale local circulations. The typical effects of land-sea breezes and tophography of coastal area on the dispersion are discussed in detail, and the model is proved as an useful tool to pridict real time pollutant transport by the results of application studies in Pusan, Korea where the urbanized coastal area with mountainous topography. It was found that sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) are differently transported and concentrated as going inland by the influence of the sea breeze with topographic changes. 하천에 순간 유입된 오염물질의 거동 특성 분석 (Analysis of Behavior Characteristics of Instantaneous Input of Pollutant in River)

  • 하천에 오염물질이 순간적으로 유입된 경우에는 연속적인 유입의 경우와 다르게 분산계수의 변화에 따라 오염물질의 거동 특성이 민감하게 변한다. 하천에 순간적으로 유입된 오염물질의 거동특성을 분석하기 위하여 한강하류부에서 수리인자 및 수질인자를 실측하였다. 분산계수 추정에 사용되는 경험식에 실측된 수리인자를 적용하여 갈수시 한강하류부의 분산계수의 규모를 분석하고, 적용 가능성이 큰 경험식을 제시하였다 또한, 실측된 수질인자를 RMA-4 모형의 계산치와 비교하여 만족할 만한 결과를 얻었다. 한강하류부에 순간적으로 유입된 오염물질의 분산계수, 하류단 수위 등의 변화에 따라 오염물질의 분산범위, 분산경로, 최초 및 최대농도 도달시간 등을 파악하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 오염물 사고에 대한 신속한 대응을 위하여 입자 분산 모형을 개발 및 개선하고 병렬 프로그램을 적용한 모의 속도 증가와 그 분석을 통하여 속도개선 결과를 평가하였다. 개발된 모형은 전단류 분산이론을 따르면서 수평 혼합 과정은 전단이송, 연직 혼합 과정은 연직배열 알고리즘을 이용한 난류 및 입자 확산을 구현하였다. 오염사고에 신속하게 대응하기 위해 모형 속도 개선을 위하여 OpenMP를 활용한 병렬 프로그래밍으로 멀티코어 적용 알고리즘을 적용하였다. 병렬 프로그래밍 적용 결과, 가상 사행수로에서 기준 소요시간 내로 모의가 가능한 입자 및 활용 코어 개수의 관계를 도출할 수 있었다. 이 연구 결과로 신속한 수질 오염사고 사고대응을 위한 적절한 모의 조건을 구성할 수 있게 되어 모형의 활용성을 증대할 수 있었다.

Numerical and wind tunnel simulation of pollutant dispersion in the near wake of buildings

  • Numerical and wind tunnel simulations of pollutant dispersion around rectangular obstacles with five aspect ratios have been conducted in order to identify the effects of flow patterns induced by buildings on plume dispersion in the near wake of buildings. An emission from a low source located upwind of obstacles was used in this simulation. The local flow patterns and concentrations around a cubical obstacle were initially investigated using three RANS turbulence models, (the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$, Shear Stress Transport (SST), Reynolds-Stress RSM turbulence model) and also using Large-eddy simulation (LES). The computed concentrations were compared with those measured in the wind tunnel. Among the three turbulence models, the SST model offered the best performance and thus was used in further investigations. The results show, for normal aspect ratios of width to height, that concentrations in the near wake are appreciably affected because of plume capture by the horseshoe vortex and convection by the vertical vortex pairs. These effects are less important for high aspect ratios. Vertical vortex pairs present a strong ability to exchange mass vertically and acts efficiently to reduce ground-level concentrations in the near wake.

격자볼츠만 아격자 모델을 이용한 난류 경계층 내에서의 오염물질 확산에 대한 수치적 연구 (Numerical Investigation of Pollutant Dispersion in a Turbulent Boundary Layer by Using Lattice Boltzmann-Subgrid Model)

  • 격자볼츠만 방법(LBM)을 이용하여 난류 경계층에서의 오염물질 확산에 대하여 수치계산을 수행 하였다. 난류 경계층 내의 유동을 모사하기 위하여 격자볼츠만 방법에 Smagorinsky 아격자 모델을 적용한 LB-SGS 모델을 사용하였으며, 오염물질의 확산을 모사하기 위하여 Passive-scalar 방법을 적용하였다. LB-SGS 모델의 신뢰성 검증을 위하여 Fackrell & Robins(1982)과 Raupach & Legg(1983)의 실험 조건과 동일한 조건하에서 수치계산을 수행하였고, 수치계산으로 얻어진 농도 분포를 실험값과 비교하였다. 이 결과로부터 LB-SGS 모델이 난류 경계층 내에서의 오염물질의 농도분포를 예측하는데 적합한 모델임을 알 수 있었다.

일광항의 항만개발에 따른 수질변화에 관한 연구 (A Study on Change of Sea Water Quality due to the Development Plan of Ilgwang Harbour)

  • It is necessary to quantitatively asses the influence of tidal currents to analysis the coastal current patterns before or after constructing offshore structures like as breakwaters. This assesment can be made through the use of simulation models designed to reproduce the water movements of the area. And it is very important to predict a phenomenon of pollutant dispersion in the area. In this study, in order to predict the changes of sea water quality for the port development plan, Ilgwang harbour, located at the east coast of Pusan, the numerical computations were carried out. The flow patterns were investigated before and after the development of the harbour bay and coastal area connected on it. The computational models are an extension of earlier work on the flow which used the ADI Method (Alternating Direction Implicit Method) in appling to Osaka Bay by KANEKO et al. The transport of pollutant constituents depends upon the currental characteristics of the water-transporting medium. In the currental flow model, water velocities and water levels are computed throughout the regions of it. These value are then used in the mass-balance equation to obtain the pollutant-constituent transport. As a result of this research, the present water quality of Ilgwang harbour and the coastal areas connected on it was proved out some good condition. The changes of sea water quality due to the port development plan of the Ilgwang habour bay and the coastal area were not large compared with the present condition, but it will be likely able to get worse by increasing the semi-enclosed areas in the harbour bay. In order to improve the water quality of the area after development, the method to activate tidal exchange in the area can be needed, as a mitigation technique.
