Conventional aspherical lens polishing methods by the small tool polishing use aspherical profile and the trajectory of the polishing tool is also controlled. In this paper, new full contact polishing mechanism is suggested to polish aspherical glass lens mold by both airbag polishing tool and eccentric motion. Full contact concept by airbag polishing tool and no position control make the easy polishing setup and do not need aspherical design profile. An aspherical lens polishing machine was made for this study and a verification experiment was performed for surface roughness improvements.
The magnetic polishing is the useful method to finish using magnetic power of a magnet. The time hasn't been that long since the magnetic polishing method was introduced to korea as one of precision polishing techniques. However, the reasons for not being spreaded widely are the magnetic polishing method don't have mediocrity for machine, the efficiency of magnet-abrasive is confined as a bad polishing, and there are not many researchers in this field. The mechanism of this R&D is dealing with the dynamic state of magnet-abrasive. This paper deals with mediocritizing magnetic polishing device into regular lathe and this experiment was conducted in order to get a best surface roughness with low cost. Beside the subsidiary experiment was performed using the mixed magnet-abrasive with general alumina, barium. This paper introduced the main reason for difficulty using this method in industrial field. It needs more continues research on it. This paper contains the result of experiment to acquire the best surface roughness, not using the high-cost polishing material in processing. The average diameters of magnet-abrasive are the particles of 150 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 250 $\mu\textrm{m}$.
Cutting process has been automated due to progress of CNC and CAD/CAM, but polishing process has been only depended on experiential knowledge of expert. Polishing work for a curved surface die demands simple and repetitive operations but requires much time for its high precision. Therefore it is operated in the handiwork by skilled worker. However the workers intend to avoid gradually polishing work because of the poor environments such as dust and noise. In order to reduce the polishing time and solve the problem of shortage of skilled workers, it has been done some research for an automation of polishing. To automate the polishing process, a 2 axes polishing robot which is attached to a 3 axes machining center has been developed by our previous research. This automatic polishing robot is able to keep the polishing tool normal on the curved surface of die. Therefore its performance of polishing is improved because of always keeping the tool normal on the surface. In this paper, the smaller sized polishing robot is developed to improve polishing performance. And the controller for 2 axes polishing robot is developed. The controller is composed of TMS320C31 with high speed which is 40-ns instruction cycle time, RAM memory with 64K words, digital input with 64 bits, digital output with 32 bits, and D/A converter with 4 channels, which is 12 bits resolution. To evaluate polishing performance of this developed robot, polishing experiment for shadow mask was carried out.
In this paper, a new polishing head with the variable pressure structure was studied to improve the planarization uniformity of the conventional template-metal head. Metal surface waviness and slurry distribution on the pad have been known to affect the polishing uniformity even in the synchronized quill and platen velocities. A polishing head with silicon rubber sheet was used to get a curved pressure distribution. In the experiment, the vertical deflection behavior on the pad was characterized with back pressure in the air chamber. Quill force increased linearly with backpressure. However, backpressure under a quill force made the upward movements of the quill. In the wafer polishing experiments, polishing rate and polishing thickness distribution were severely changed with backpressure. The best uniformity was observed with the standard deviation off.5% level of average polishing removal 215nm at backpressure 12.1kPa.
An advanced expert system for supporting automatic polishing operation of mold and die has been developed. The goal of this system is to minimize the polishing time, the number of polishing and tools used. Also, this paper proposes the advanced concept of the polishing method to perform polishing operation of mold and die, and it has adapted to the orthogonal array method. as a statistical technique, to choose an optimal polishing condition. An expert system consists of the polishing machining database that includes the information of workpiece and polishing tools, and the input/output module.
In this paper, the polishing force monitoring and the control method were implemented for the polishing machine with the airbag tool. Airbag tool has been known to be adaptable to the curvature variation such as the aspherical and the free-form surface. However, it was necessary to control the tool movement of vertical axis also because of the table rotational wobble and vibration. To solve it by the polishing force control, we installed another stepping motor to the z-axis. And the polishing force was measured with the load cell and controlled by the PID Labview controller. A few hundreds gram of the polishing force were well controlled under 0.8 second of the response time and 5% variation. An experiment was done to clean the edge burrs of the micro channel structure of width $87{\mu}m$ using the polishing force control.
MR fluid can change viscosity in the presence of a magnetic field. A characteristic of MR fluid is reduced scattering during jetting. For these reasons a MR fluid jet polishing system can be used for ultra-precision polishing. In the current paper, the polishing path was calculated considering the aspherical lens profile equation and the experimental conditions for the MR fluid jet polishing system. Then the polishing of an aspherical lens mold core using the MR fluid jet polishing system with the calculated path control was made and the results were compared before and after polishing.
The ultra-precision polishing method using MR fluid has come into the spotlight for polishing metals and optical materials. The MR fluid jet polishing process can be controlled using a change of viscosity by an imposed magnetic field. The MR fluid used for polishing process is a mixture of CI particles, DI water, $Na_2CO_3$ and glycerin. The efficiency of polishing depends on parameters such as polishing time, magnetic field, stand-off distance, pressure, etc. In this paper, the MR fluid jet polishing was used to polish nickel and brass mold materials, which is used to fabricate backlight units for 3-D optical devices in mobile display industries. In MR jet polishing, ferromagnetic materials like nickel can decrease the polishing efficiency by interaction with the cohesiveness of the MR fluid more than non-ferromagnetic materials like copper. A series of tests with different polishing times showed that the surface roughness of brass (Ra=1.84 nm) was lower than that of nickel (Ra=2.31 nm) after polishing for 20 minutes.
Electro-theological fluid is recently used for the micro polishing of 3-dimensional micro-aspherical lens. It's also used for polishing small area defects on the wide flat wafer. Since ER fluid shows a behavior of viscosity changing under certain electric fields. micro polishing efficiency may be enhanced for certain cases. In this paper, a perfluorinated carbonyl fluoride oil based ER fluids was used to improve surface polishing rate and submicron-scale accuracy. As the polishing electrodes, micro size cylindrical tools had been used for maximizing the electric field. An experimental device, which was applied for micro polishing a number of wafers of 4inches in size and other workpiece. was made on a precision polishing system. It consisted of a steel electrode. a wafer fixture. l0㎃ current and DC 5㎸ power supply unit, and a controller unit. From the Experiments. the ER fluid is applicable for micro polishing of small parts.
In the process of optical parts machining, polishing has been applied. Traditional polishing process is suitable for spherical optical parts. But it is very difficult to apply traditional process for aspheric optical parts. Nowadays, as growing needs for aspherical optic parts, many researches have been conducted. In this study, we developed computer controlled polishing system which consists of three major parts of active pressure control for correcting polishing process, mechanical on-machine measurement for rough polishing, and optical on-machine measurement for finish polishing, respectively. In this paper, a systematic stretegy for correcting polishing process, pressure control scheme for polishing tool, and on-machine measurement methods for automated and precise polishing are suggested. The information about developed machine is also included.
