Demand Survey Method for Commercialization of Police Science Technology and Equipment

  • This study is a demand research for the selection of public safety science and technology equipment and suggests an empirical research method. The technology demand survey is the beginning of the selection of innovative technology. And it is the basis of collecting information required for the technology required in the market and helping to apply it to the field. The demand survey for police science and technology can reduce the uncertainty of crime prevention and help the smooth implementation of security policies. However, in Korea, adoption of security science and technology equipment was centered on social issues or researchers' opinions rather than the demands of field users. Until, there was no research has been conducted on the demands of field police officers for selection of security science and technology equipment in Korea. Also, there was no preferential study for the demand for security science and technology equipment. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology that can systematically identify the needs for the technology and equipment of field experts suitable for the public security situation for the selection of security science and technology equipment. Specifically, we propose a sample design for a technology classification system and a survey tool for technology awareness and satisfaction. It is expected that this tool will provide a classification system for security science and technology equipment selected for the Korean police and will help determine the priority of equipment suitable for the field.

The Protective Effect of Fair and Supportive Leadership against Burnout in Police Employees

  • Background: This study investigated the association between fair and supportive leadership and symptoms of burnout and insomnia in police employees. Burnout and insomnia can have negative consequences for health, performance, and safety among employees in the police profession, and risk and protective factors should be thoroughly investigated. Methods: Data were collected in a police district in Norway through questionnaires administered in October 2018 and May 2019. The sample consisted of 206 police employees (52% males), with an average age of 42 years and 16 years of experience in the police occupation. Results: The results showed that a high degree of fair and supportive leadership was associated with lower levels of burnout and insomnia six months later. Fair and supportive leadership explained a greater amount of variance in burnout compared to insomnia. This finding indicates that fair and supportive leadership is a more important buffer factor against burnout than it is against insomnia. Stress was positively associated with burnout and insomnia, whereas quantitative job demands had no significant association with the concepts. Conclusion: Fair and supportive leadership can help protect employees from adverse consequences of stress and contribute to improved occupational health, whereas a low degree of support and fair treatment from leaders can both represent a stressor by itself and contribute to poorer coping of stressful events at work. The important role of leadership should be incorporated in measures aimed at preventing and reducing burnout and sleep problems.

The Effectiveness of the 'One-Table One-Flower' Program on Job Stress Management of Police Officials

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of flower decorations on job stress and stress copying style of police officers. Flower decorations were done in the form of "one-table one-flower", in which flowers were placed on each desk in the office space. By analyzing color psychology, we first identified the symbolism of color, and selected the cut flowers in the same color. We selected six types of flowers in six colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Each Monday morning, the flower decorations were delivered to the police station. We selected 50 subjects who wanted to keep flowers on their desks every week as the experimental group and 44 subjects who only wanted to participated in the assessment as the control group. Before and after the program, we examined the mean difference between the control group and experimental group. After six sessions of the program, there was a significant difference in job stress (p < .001) and stress copying style (p = .049) of the experimental group compared to the control group. Therefore, this study proved that having flower decorations in an office space is effective for the psychological stability of police officers that are highly stressed, due to sensory stimulations from the colors and scents of flowers as well as mutual interaction as they take care of the flowers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the actual disaster response and suggest improvement measures for introduction of an autonomous police system Method: This study suggests the improvement measures by reviewing police disaster response manual, related statistical data, and statutes comprehensively Result: The introduction of autonomous police system enabled effective management of police based on circumstances of each region. However, there are still doubts on police response against situations that require large number of personnel. According to analysis on roles of autonomous police during the mass disasters, the autonomous police controlled disaster site to prevent secondary damage, prevented additional disaster damages, and rescued people. However, it is hard for the autonomous police to respond against the mass disasters due to its structure. Conclusion: To improve the response of autonomous police against mass disasters, this study suggested on disaster scene control and secondary damage prevention by the police, cooperative disaster response with regional autonomous police, and utilization of control tower.

  • This study has to improve the recruitment of Private Police Guards. Secure fairness on recruitment of Private Police Guards has secure excellent Private Police Guards. Under the request of requesting entity, private police guards perform police tasks at the relevant area. Recruitment takes a pivotal role because they take unusual characteristics as they perform police duties at key national institutions, unlike private security. However, problems have continuously arouse due to issues like closed recruitment, interview-based recruitment, and composition of interviewers. Accordingly, this research suggested arranging mandatory regulation to recruit publically, adaptation of physical or written exams in view of characteristics of guarding facilities, and obligating external members when consisting interviewers as solutions.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in the Police Force

  • Background: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a major preventable occupational health problem with 250 million people worldwide known to have disabling impairment of moderate to greater severity. The aims of the study are to estimate the prevalence of NIHL in the police force; and study its association with age, sex, duration of service (years), smoking and alcohol habits, use of hearing protective devices, as well as preexisting chronic diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 543 police personnel who had undergone periodic medical examination over a 12-month period. The diagnostic criteria for NIHL were (1) history of occupational noise exposure, (2) bilateral hearing loss, (3) hearing loss of ${\geq}25dBA$ at 4,000 Hz in two consecutive audiograms, and (4) no significant medical history affecting hearing. Severity of NIHL was based on the World Health Organization grading. Results: Males (74.8%) made up the majority of the police force. The mean age for police personnel was $35.55{\pm}9.57years$, and the mean duration of service was $14.75{\pm}9.39years$. Compliance with the usage of hearing protective devices was seen in 64.4%. The prevalence of NIHL in this study population was 34.2%, with a higher prevalence in males (37.7%) than in females (23.9%). The study also showed strong associations between NIHL and male sex (odds ratio, 1.9; P < 0.05), and hypertension (odds ratio, 3.3; P < 0.001). Overall, 93% were found to have mild NIHL, 3.5% had moderate NIHL, and 3.5% had severe NIHL. No police personnel were found to have profound hearing loss. Conclusion: The prevalence of NIHL in this study is high compared to other similar studies among police personnel. This study shows that increasing age, male, presence of hypertension, diabetes, and longer duration of service are significant associated factors for NIHL. Preventative strategies include health surveillance, implementation of a hearing conservation program, and legislation.

  • Maritime police recognize that the organizational culture of various acting as a member of the organization. Also, marine policing and security activities to determine the number of build. The overall culture of maritime police who share the organization sub-culture may take place. Maritime police organizational culture and a variety of types of group culture, hierarchical culture, development culture, rational culture examined the differences in perceptions. Maritime police aware of the general results of the analysis are as follows; First, the maritime police officers of the age group of 20 was the highest recognition in hierarchy culture and rational culture. Second, the maritime police officers of the rank of captain was the highest recognition in development culture and rational culture. Third, differences in the perception of organizational culture by recruitment analysis show the difference in cultural groups showed, in particular, the special recruitment group of police officers, and maritime police culture can be seen tend to appear low.

  • Avulsion rupture of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon at the distal phalanx is a rare injury. It usually occurs during extension of the DIP joint, while the flexor digitorum profundus tendon is contracted, or when strong extension force is applied, to the distal phalanx. We experienced a patient, combat policeman who had avulsion rupture of flexor digitorum profundus tendon at the distal phalanx after 2 days of combat exercise. Here, we would like to report unusual case of rare tendon injury with studies from other papers.

Radiologic Assessment of Normal Acromial Arch (정상인의 견봉궁 형태에 대한 방사선 계측)

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study is to evaluate morphology of acromion in relation to age and symmetry in asymptomatic adults. Materials and Methods: Seventy five asymptomatic adults were divided into two groups by age(A group of age twenties and B group of age over forty) and both acromial outlet views were obtained. One hundred fifty radiographs were typed and assessed radiologically by methods of Getz and Liotard. Results: The relative percentages of acromial types I, Ⅱ, and Ⅲ were 3%, 90% and 7% in the A group and 6%, 82% and 12% in the B group respectively, Subacromial peak and spinoacromial angle were 4.3mm, 82 degrees in the A group and 4.6mm, 78 degrees in the B group. Conclusion: Incidence of type is not related to age in normal adult and type II is the most common type. Spinoacromial angle is decreased in older age group and type Ⅲ.

Diagnostic Approach to a Patient with a Pleural Effusion Including Ultrasound-guided Paracentesis Performed by a Medical Resident (내과 전공의가 시행한 초음파 이용 흉수천자를 포함한 흉수의 진단적 접근)

  • Background: A patient with a pleural effusion that is difficult to safely drain by a "blind" thoracentesis procedure is generally referred to a radiologist for ultrasound-guided thoracentesis. But such a referral increases the cost and the patient's inconvenience, and it causes delay in the diagnostic procedures. If ultrasound-guided thoracentesis is performed as a bedside procedure by a medical resident, then this will reduce the previously mentioned problems. So these patients with pleural effusions were treated by medical residents at our medical center, and the procedures included bedside ultrasound-guided thoracenteses. Methods: We studied 89 cases of pleural effusions from March 2003 to June 2005. A "blind" thoracentesis was performed if the amount of pleural effusion was moderate or large. Bedside ultrasound-guided thoracentesis was performed for small or loculated effusions or for the cases that failed with performing a "blind" thoracentesis. Results: "Blind" thoracenteses were performed in 79 cases that had a moderate or large amount of uncomplicated pleural effusions and the success rate was 93.7% (74/79 cases). Ultrasound-guided thoracentesis by the medical residents was performed in 15 cases and the success rate was 66.7% (10/15 cases). The 5 failedcases included all 3 cases with loculated effusions and 2 cases with a small amount of pleural effusion. All the failed cases were referred to one radiologist and they were then successfully treated. If we exclude the 3 cases with loculated pleural effusions, the success rate of ultrasound-guided thoracentesis by the medical residents increased up to 83% (10/12cases). Two cases of complications (1 pneumothorax, 1 hydrohemothorax) occurred during ultrasound-guided thoracentesis. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided thoracentesis performed as a bedside procedure by a medical resident may be relatively effective and safe. If a patient has a loculated effusion, then it would be better to first refer the patient to a radiologist.
