The light and energy-efficiency of classical liquid crystal displays is notoriously poor due to the use of absorption-based linear polarisers and colour filters. For instance, the light efficiency of PVAL polarisers is typically between 40 and 45 % and the colour filters have a typical efficiency below 35 % which results in a total light and energy-efficiency of the display below 10 %. In the past, a variety of polarizers were developed with an enhanced efficiency in generating linearly polarized light. Typically, these polarizers are based on the polarisationselective reflection, scattering or refraction of light i.e. one polarisation direction of light is directly transmitted to the LCD/viewer and the other polarization direction of light is depolarised and recycled which results in a typical efficiency for generating linearly polarized light of 70-85 %. Also, special colour filters have been proposed based on chiral-nematic reactive mesogens which increase the efficiency of generating colour. Despite the enormous progress in this field, a need persists for improved methods for generating polarized light and colour based on low cost optical components with a high efficiency. Here, the use of holographic phase gratings is reported for the generation of polarized light and colour. The phase grating are recorded in a photopolymer which is coated onto a backor frontlight for LCDs. Typically the recording is performed in the transmisson mode or in the waveguiding mode and slanted phase gratings are generated with their refractive index modulation at an angle between 20o and 45o with the normal of the substrate. It is shown that phase gratings with a high refractive index modulation and a high efficiency can be generated by a proper selection of the photopolymer and illumination conditions. These phase gratings coupleout linearly polarized light with a high contrast (> 100) and the light is directed directly to the LCD/viewer without the need for redirection foils. Dependent on the type of phase grating, the different colours are coupled-out at a slightly different angle which potentially increases the efficiency of classical colour filters. Moreover, the phase gratings are completely transparent in direct view which opens the possibility to use them in frontlights for LCDs. Holographic polarization gratings posses a periodic pattern in the polarization state of light (and not in the intensity of light). A periodic pattern in the polarization direction of linearly polarized light is obtained upon interference of two circularly polarized laser beams. In the second part of the lecture, it is shown that these periodic polarization patterns can be recorded in a linear photo-polymerizable polymer (LPP) and that such an alignment layer induces a period rotation in the director of (reactive and non-reactive) liquid crystals. By a proper design, optical components can be produced with only first order diffraction and with a very high efficiency (>0.98). It is shown that these diffraction gratings are potentially useful in projection displays with a high brightness and energy efficiency
We investigated the generation of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in the cell with slanted non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on two kinds of the polyimide (PI) film. It was shown that the monodomain alignment in NLC is obtained in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. The pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3 degrees in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 70 degrees on PI surface without side chain. But, the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 1 degree in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 80 degrees on PI surface with side chain. We consider that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributted to anisotropic dispersion force between the LC molecular and the PI surface.

This study was conducted to evaluate worker exposure to airborne asbestos fibers by industry, and to evaluate polarized-light microscopy for determining airborne asbestos fibers. A total of 11 plants including asbestos textile, brake-lining manufacturing, slate manufacturing, and automobile maintenance shops were investigated. Rsults of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Worker exposure levels to airborne asbestos fibers were the highest in asbestos textile industry, followed by brake-lining manufacturing, slate manufacturing, and automobile maintenance shops, in order. In asbestos textile industry, large variation of asbestos levels was found by plants. The worst plant indicated airborne fiber concentrations in excess of 10 fibers/cc, however, the best plant showed concentrations within 0.50 fibers/cc. 2. Characterization of airborne fibers by industry indicated that fibers from asbestos textile industry were the longest with the largest aspect ratio. Fibers from automobile maintenance shops were the shortest with the smallest aspect ratio. Based on characteristics of fibers and the highest levels of concentrations, it is concluded that workers in the asbestos textile industry are exposed to the highest risk of producing asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. 3. Result s obtained using polarized-light microscopy were $43.7{\pm}12.3%$ of the results obtained using phase contrast microscopy. This may be resulted from the worse resolution of polarized-light microscopy than that of phase contrast microscopy. Based on the results, it is recommended that polarized-light microscopy be used for mainly bulk sample analyses and further study be performed to improve the method for determining airborne samples. However, polarized-light microscopy can be used for determining thick fibers.

We have investigated that the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) is obtained with polarized ultraviolet(PUV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. The LC alignment capability increases with increasing the UV light irradiation time. The polarized UV light irradiation on oblique angle of 60。 irradiated on PI surface rotated by 90。 at 10 min. after being normally irradiated on PI surface at 30 min., the generated pretilt angle of NLC is about 2.5。. The pretilt angle of NLC is attributed to the interaction between the LC molecules and the asymmetric triangular structure of polymer surface due to photo-depolymerization of polymer with the oblique UV light on PI surface. The voltage -transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned twisted nematic (TN)-LCD with UV light irradiation time 60 min. were almost same in comparison with the rubbing-treated TN-LCD.
We synthesized polymethacrylate and polyurethane bearing a photosensitive azobenzene chromophore. Photo-induced birefringence of the thin film was observed under a linearly polarized light(λ = 532 nm). Dynamic behaviors of birefringence in two polymers were investigated in terms of the rate constants of growth and decay. An induced dichroism was observed from polarized UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. Layers of two photosensitive polymers were used for aligning liquid crystal (LC) molecules instead of one of the rubbed polyimide layers in the conventional twisted nematic cell. For producing homogeneous alignment of a nematic LC molecule, a linearly polarized light was exposed to the films of two polymers. The stability of the LC alignment upon the linearly polarized light exposure was also studied.
Photocrosslinkable soluble polyimide and polymethacrylate compound were synthesized for studying the optically induced anisotropy of the thin films. Chalcone group was introduced into the side chain unit of two polymers. We observed a photodimerization behavior between the double bonds in the chalcone group and an optical anisotropy of these materials by irradiation of a linearly polarized UV light (LPL). Optical anisotropy of the thin film was also investigated by using polarized UV absorption spectroscopy. The dynamic property of optical anisotropy in photoreactive polyimide was compared to that in polymethacrylate containing chalcone group in the side chain.

We present highly polarized light emissions from an OLED on a flexible photonic anisotropic substrate. It was found that the polarization direction of emitted electroluminescent light corresponded to the ordinaryaxis of the photonic anisotropic substrate. Furthermore, it was also found that luminous polarized electroluminescence over 4,500 cd/$m^2$ was produced with high peak efficiency of 6 cd/A and high polarization ratio over 25.

A new configuration of LCD projectors for polarized stereoscopic projection having no light loss in the polarization process is suggested. In the proposed system, two polarizing filters that are employed in the conventional LCD polarized stereoscopic projection system causing additional light loss and image distortion are excluded by taking into account of polarization property of the LCD projector and image processing techniques. From some experimental results by using the Type-1 LCD projectors, light loss of the proposed system occurring in the polarization process is found to be zero.
From some experimental results by using the Type-1 LCD projectors of NEC MT 1060R, light loss of the proposed system occurring in the polarization process is found to be zero and the resultant stereoscopic video image projected from this system is also found to be 213%, 75% and 300% brighter than those projected from the conventional Type-1 LCD projector-based, Type-2 LCD projector-based and Type-3 projector-based systems, respectively.
We investigated H-type molecular aggregation in a simply spin-coated amorphous homopolymer film of polymethacrylate containing push-pull azobenzene moieties. It was found that the aggregate formation was strongly influenced by thermal treatment an d that the aggregate created in the polymer film could be easily disrupted by irradiation of a linearly polarized light. In the first writing cycle of aggregated polymer film, photo-induced birefringence showed a steep increase to the highest value followed by a gradual decrease to the certain asymptotic value under longer irradiation of a linearly polarized light. This unique behavior could be attributed to the cooperative motion and the disruption of the aggregated molecules under continuous irradiation of light.
