Purpose : To investigate the feasibility of in vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for evaluation of lung cancer. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board of our hospital and informed consent was obtained in all patients. Ten patients (7 men, 3 women; mean age, 64.4) with pathologicallyproven lung cancer (mean, 56.8 mm; range, 44-77 mm) were enrolled to 1.5 T MRS using a single-voxel respiration-triggered point-resolved spectroscopic sequence. Technical success rate and the reason of technical failure, if any, were investigated. Results: Out of 10 lung cancers, analyzable MRS spectra were obtained in 8 tumors (technical success rate, 80%). Two MRS datasets were not able to be analyzed due to serious baseline distortion. Choline and lipid signals were detected as major metabolites in analyzable MRS spectra. Conclusion: In vivo proton MRS method using a single-voxel respiration-triggered point-resolved spectroscopic sequence is feasible in obtaining the MR spectra of lung cancer because these spectra were analyzable and high success rate was shown in our study although there was the limitation of small patient group.
Purpose : This study isto determine the grade of brain tumor and compare the characteristics in each grade using in MRS (MR Spectroscopy). Method : STEAM (Stimulated Echo Acquisition Method) and protocol of PRESS (Point Resolved Spectroscopy) were used in the levels of tumor grade. We classified the pattern of tumor and analysis of the spectrum signals quantitatively from voxel in the brain tumor grade. In accordance with the result, we calculated the accuracy of biochemical. Result : In high-grade tumor, the NAA/Cr showed the signal reduction of 29.4% and 53.9%. However Cho/Cr increased 570% and 711%. However, in low-grade tumor, NAA/Cr downed to 42.6% and 58.1%. Cho/Cr increased to 188% and 195%. Conclusion : The study suggests that the comparative analysis of signals from MR spectroscopy could be useful to evaluate the grade of tumor and find out the characteristics of it. By extension, MR spectroscopy can be used for research with other organs in the human.
We report magnetic resonance image (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) findings in a patient of cerebral fat embolism (CFE) occurred in a 26-year-old woman after an autologous fat injection into the face. After initial neurologic symptom onset, MRI and MRS data were obtained two times to investigate repeated CFE. We obtained the MRS data in the two different time intervals and two different echo times to compare the lesions with normal brain parenchyma. The results of MRS data showed that a decrease in N-acetyl-aspartate, an increase in lactate and a very high early peak of free lipids between 0.9 and 1.4 ppm were obtained at the acute infarcted lesion as compared with normal brain parenchyma. In addition, these findings were more clearly detected on short echo time spectrum rather than long spectrum. A close relationship between the clinical manifestations and MRI and MRS findings of the brain can helpful to distinguish CFE with other conditions and to evaluate the cause materials of infarctions rather than conventional MRI or diffusion-weighted imaging.
This study evaluated the effect of gadolinium contrast agents on the spectrum of metabolites during $^1H-MRS$ of brain and to investigate whether the contrast agents injected before MR spectroscopy significantly affect the estimated peaks of MRS. From January to May 2017, brain MR spectroscopy was performed on 30 patients to compare the spectrum before and after contrast injection of the brain white matter tissue. As a result, the spectrum of metabolites decreased after the paramagnetic contrast agents injected. However, it was not statistically significant which indicated that the use of contrast agent did not meaningfully affect the spectrum of metabolites. In conclusion, the use of the paramagnetic contrast before the acquisition of the spectroscopy may aid voxel positioning especially when it is difficult to determine the exact location of the lesion or the contrast is low.
Purpose : We developed a 3D CSI (chemical shift imaging) sequence that uses the PRESS (point resolved spectroscopy) excitation scheme and spiral-based readout gradients. Materials and Methods : We implemented constant-density spirals ($32{\times}32$ matrix, $24{\times}24\;cm$ FOV) which use analytic equations to enable real-time prescription on the scanner. In-vivo data from the brain were collected and reconstructed using the gridding algorithm. Results : Data illustrate that with our imaging sequence, the benefits of the PRESS technique, which include elimination of lipid artifacts, remain intact while flexible scan time versus resolution tradeoffs can be achieved using the constant-density spirals. Volumetric high resolution 3D CSI covering 5760 cm3 could be obtained in 12.5 minutes. Conclusion : Spiral-based readout gradients offer a flexible tradeoff between scan time versus resolution. By combining this feature with PRESS based excitation, efficient methods of volumetric spectroscopic imaging can be accomplished by obtaining whole brain coverage while eliminating lipid contamination.

In this study, transverse relaxation time (T2) measurement and the evaluation of the characteristics of the spectral peak related to stomach tissue metabolites were performed using ex vivo proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) at 1.5-T MRI/S instruments. Thirty-two gastric tissues resected from 12 patients during gastric cancer surgery, of which 19 were normal tissue and 13 were cancerous tissue, were used to measure the $T_2$ of the magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) peaks. The volume of interest data results from the MRSI measurements were extracted from the proper muscle (MUS) layer and the composite mucosa/submucosa (MC/SMC) layer and were statistically analyzed. MR spectra were acquired using the chemical shift imaging (CSI) point resolved spectroscopy (CSI-PRESS) technique with the parameters of pulse repetition time (TR) and echo times (TE) TR/(TE1,TE2)=1500 msec/(35 msec, 144 msec), matrix $size=24{\times}24$, NA=1, and voxel $size=2.2{\times}2.2{\times}4mm^3$. In conclusion, the measured $T_2$ of the metabolite peaks, such as choline (3.21ppm) and lipid (1.33ppm), were significantly decreased (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively) in the cancerous stomach tissue.
Purpose: We achieved high resolution MR imaging and spectra of human skin in vitro with using a 14.1 T MRI/MRS system, and evaluated the hydration effect of various cosmetic products by measuring the skin's. moisture concentration. Materials and Methods: We used the Bruker 14.1 T MRI/MRS system with a vertical standard bore that was equipped with a DMX spectrometer gradient system (200 G/cm at a maximum 40 A), RF resonators (2, 5 and 10 mm) and Para Vision software. Spin echo and fast spin echo pulse sequences were employed for obtaining the high resolution MR images. The 3D-localized point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) method was used to acquire the MR spectra. Results: The high resolution MR images and spectra of human skin in vitro were successfully obtained on a 14.1 T system. The water concentration of human skin after applying a moisturizer was higher than that before applying a moisturizer. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that the high-resolution MR images and spectra of human skin from a high field NMR instrument could be applicable to evaluating the hydration state of the stratum corneum.
In this study, we investigate the effects of poor shimming on quantitative measurement of ratios of metabolite levels by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^1$H MRS). Coefficient of variation (COV) of metabolite ratios for point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) and stimulated-echo acquisition mode (STEAM) spectra was evaluated from a phantom containing in vivo levels of metabolites using a conventional whole body 1.5T MR system and conventional acquisition and analysis protocol. A statistical P-value was also calculated from a linear regression for relationship of metabolite ratios. N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/ creatine (Cr) and NAA/ choline (Cho) had low COV values for the long and short TE spectra (29.1 and 27.5%; 23.8 and 12.6 %), whereas Cho/Cr and Cr/Cho had high COV values (50.0 and 68.6 %; 27.5 and 29.3 %). A linear relationship between NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr, and between NAA/Cho and Cr/Cho revealed the statistical significance in the long and short TE spectra, respectively (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001; P = 0.015 and P = 0.005). There was no significant relationship between Cho/NAA and Cr/NAA in the measurement (P = 0.159; P = 0.910). The present study suggested that NAA/Cr and NAA/Cho could be useful for data with poor shimming in $^1$H MR spectroscopy. In conclusion, statistical significance of metabolite ratios indicated that the Cr and Cho levels could be interpreted as a significant alteration factor in the long and short TE spectra, and then should be used with care to provide precise metabolite quantification.
In this study, we observed the alteration of choline signal intensity in hippocampus region of the depressive rat model induced by forced swimming test (FST). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antidepressant efficacy in the depressive animal model using MR spectroscopy. Fourteen experimentally naive male Sprague-Dawley rats weighting $160{\sim}180\;g$ were used as subjects. Drug injection group was exposed to the FST except for control group. The drugs were administered subcutaneously (SC) in a volume equivalent to 2ml/kg. And three injections were administered 23, 5, and 1h before beginning the given test. 1H MR spectra were obtained with use of a point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) localization sequence performed according to the following parameters: repetition time, 2500 ms; echo time, 144 ms; 512 average; 2048 complex data points; voxel dimensions, $1.5{\times}2.5{\times}2.5\;mm^3$ ; acquisition time, 25min. There were no differences in NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratio between the right and the left hippocampus both normal control rats and antidepressant-injected rats. Also, no differences were observed in NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratio between the normal control rats and the antidepressant-injected rats both the right and the left hippocampus. In this study, we found the recovery of choline signals in the depressive animal model similar to normal control groups as injecting desipramine-HCl which was antidepressant causing anti-immobility effects. Thus, we demonstrated that MR spectroscopy was able to aid in evaluating the antidepressant effect of desipramine-HCl.

Purpose : To introduce and demonstrate the advantages of the new hybrid two-dimensional (2D) proton spectroscopic imaging (SI) over the single voxel spectroscopy (SVS) and conventional 2D SI in the clinical application of spectroscopy for pediatric cerebral disease. Materials and Methods : Eighty-one hybrid 2D proton spectroscopic imaging was performed in 79 children (36 normal infants and children, 10 with hypoxic-ischemic injury, 20 with toxic-metabolic encephalopathy, seven with brain tumor, three with meningoencephalitis, one with neurofibromatosis, one with Sturge-Weber syndrome and one with lissencephaly) ranging in age from the third day of life to 15 years. In adult volunteers (n=5), all three techniques including hybrid 2D proton SI, SVS using PRESS sequence, and conventional 2D proton SI were performed. Both hybrid 2D proton SI and SVS using PRESS sequence were performed in clinical cases (n=). All measurements were performed with a 1.5-T scanner using standard head quadrature coil. The 16$\times$16 phase encoding steps were set on variable field of view (FOV) depending on the size of the brain. The hybrid volume of interest inside FOV was set as $75{\times}75{\times}15{\;}\textrm{mm}^3$ or smaller to get rid of unwanted fat signal. Point-resolved spectroscopy (TR/TE=1,500 msec/135 or 270msec) was employed with standard chemical shift selective saturation (CHESSI pulses for water suppression. The acquisition time and spectral quality of hybrid 2D proton SI were compared with those of SVS and conventional 2D proton SI. Results : The hybrid 2D proton SI was successfully conducted upon all patients.
