Purpose: A modified free thenar flap was designed for coverage of volar finger defect with constant innervation using the palmar cutaneous branch of the median nerve. After clinical application of this flap, sensory results were evaluated in 6 cases. Methods: Patients were selected who have volar soft tissue defect with or without fingertip defect. The six cases of the innervated free thenar flap were performed since September 2009, and sensory outcomes were evaluated by the Semmes-Weinstein monofilament and two-point discriminator at four and half month after the surgery. Results: The Semmes-Weinstein Monofilament test revealed 3 cases showed 2.83, 1 case showed 3.61, 1 case showed 4.31 and 1 case showed 4.56. The static two-point discrimination test revealed 1 case showed 4 mm, 1 case showed 6 mm, 2 cases showed 9 mm, and 2 cases showed over 15 mm. The moving two-point discrimination test revealed 1 case showed 3 mm, 1 case showed 4 mm, 1 case showed 5 mm, 1 case showed 7 mm, and 2 cases showed over 15 mm. The donor sites showed no significant limitation of the thumb and neuroma formation. Conclusion: The innervated free thenar flap showed good sensory outcomes as a sensate free flap in a short time after surgery. It can be an option for coverage of volar finger defects that requires sensation.

Objective: To compare the utility of computed tomography perfusion (CTP) and three different 4-point scoring systems in computed tomography angiography (CTA) in confirming brain death (BD) in patients with and without skull defects. Materials and Methods: Ninety-two patients clinically diagnosed as BD using CTA and/or CTP for confirmation were retrospectively reviewed. For the final analysis, 86 patients were included in this study. Images were re-evaluated by three radiologists according to the 4-point scoring systems that consider the vessel opacification on 1) the venous phase for both M4 segments of the middle cerebral arteries (MCAs-M4) and internal cerebral veins (ICVs) (A60-V60), 2) the arterial phase for the MCA-M4 and venous phase for the ICVs (A20-V60), 3) the venous phase for the ICVs and superior petrosal veins (ICV-SPV). The CTP images were independently reviewed. The presence of an open skull defect and stasis filling was noted. Results: Sensitivities of the ICV-SPV, A20-V60, A60-V60 scoring systems, and CTP in the diagnosis of BD were 89.5%, 82.6%, 67.4%, and 93.3%, respectively. The sensitivity of A20-V60 scoring was higher than that of A60-V60 in BD patients (p < 0.001). CTP was found to be the most sensitive method (86.5%) in patients with open skull defect (p = 0.019). Interobserver agreement was excellent in the diagnosis of BD, in assessing A20-V60, A60-V60, ICV-SPV, CTP, and good in stasis filling (κ: 0.84, 0.83, 0.83, 0.83, and 0.67, respectively). Conclusion: The sensitivity of CTA confirming brain death differs between various proposed 4-point scoring systems. Although the ICV-SPV is the most sensitive, evaluation of the SPV is challenging. Adding CTP to the routine BD CTA protocol, especially in cases with open skull defect, could increase sensitivity as a useful adjunct.

Background: Many options are available to cover a palatal defect, including local or free flaps. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of palatal mucoperiosteal island flap in covering a palatal defect after tumor excision. Methods: Between October 2006 and July 2013, we identified 19 patients who underwent palatal reconstruction using a palatal mucoperiosteal island flap after tumor excision. All cases were retrospectively analyzed by defect location, size, tumor pathology, type of reconstruction, and functional outcomes. Speech and swallowing functions were evaluated using a 7-point visual analog scale (VAS) score. Results: Among the 19 patients, there were 7 men and 12 women with an age range of 25 to 74 years (mean, $52.5{\pm}14.3$ years). The size of flaps was $2-16cm^2$ (mean, $9.4{\pm}4.2cm^2$). Either unilateral or bilateral palatal island flaps were used depending on the size of defect. During the follow-up period (mean, $32.7{\pm}21.4$ months), four patients developed a temporary oronasal fistula, which healed without subsequent operative. The donor sites were well re-epithelized. Speech and swallowing function scores were $6.63{\pm}0.5$ and $6.58{\pm}0.69$ on the 7-point VAS, indicating the ability to eat solid foods and communicate verbally without significant disability. Conclusion: The palatal mucoperiosteal island flap is a good reconstruction modality for palatal defects if used under appropriate indications. The complication rates and donor site morbidity are low, with good functional outcomes.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to estimate muscle defect by ultrasonography in the patients with secondary deformities of the lip. We investigated the association between the muscle defect in the repaired cleft lip and the philtral appearance not only at resting state but also maximal puckering. Methods: From December 2006 to November 2007, 52 children were evaluated after primary or secondary cheiloplasty. Digital photographs were taken both from the front and both three quarter views in repose and at maximal pucker. Video clips were also taken in repose and at maximal pucker. A panel of four, scored the philtral ridge and dimple seen on these photographs and videos by using two visual analog scales. Eminence of the philtral ridge was scored by a 5 point grading scale, from "conspicuous groove" to "normal philtral ridge" and the philtral dimple was scored by 3 point grading scale, from "no dimple" to "prominent dimple". Ultrasound images of the upper lip were made using a linear array transducer at the resting position of the lip and evaluated by a single radiologist. Results: The philtral ridge eminence scored $2.79{\pm}0.54$ and $1.40{\pm}0.53$ at resting and maximal pucker, correlating with "flat" and "conspicous groove". The philtral dimpling scored $1.44{\pm}0.53$ and $2.27{\pm}0.66$ at resting and maximal pucker, correlating with "no dimple" and "slight dimple". Ultrasound imaging showed the average muscle dehiscence to be $3.78{\pm}2.14$ mm at resting position. Correlation between the muscle defect in ultrasound imaging and philtral ridge eminence at rest was statistically significant (p<0.050), but was not significant (p=0.756) at maximal pucker using Spearman's rank correlation. Correlation between the muscle defect in ultrasound imaging and philtral dimpling was not statistically significant both at rest (p=0.920) and at maximal pucker (p=0.815) using Spearman's rank correlation. Conclusion: Quantitative assessment of the muscle defect using ultrasonography correlates with the static philtral appearance, but does not correlate with the dynamic appearance. Also, the size of the muscle defect does not show any correlation with the philtral dimpling. Our findings reveal that ultrasound imaging partially reflect static appearance of philtrum but cannot reflect dynamic appearance and suggest the need for further research to evaluate dynamic appearance.
Detecting defects on FPD (Flat Panel Display) color filter before the full panel is made is important to reduce the manufacturing cost. Among many types of defects, the low contrast blemish such as Suzi Mura is difficult to detect using standard CCD cameras. Even skilled inspectors in the inspection line can hardly identify such defects using bare eyes. To overcome this difficulty, point spectrometer has been used to analyze the spectrum to differentiate such defects from normal color filters. However, scanning ever increasing-size color filters by a point spectrometer takes too long time to be used in real production line. We propose a system using a spectral camera which can be viewed as a line scan camera composed of an array of point spectrometers. Three types of lighting system that exhibit different illumination spectrums are devised together with a calibration method of the proposed spectral camera system. To visualize the defect areas, various processing algorithms to identify and to enhance the small differences in spectrum between defective and normal areas are developed. Experiments shows 85% successful visualization. of real samples using the proposed system.
In this study, effects of forming angle and friction coefficient on a initiation of the Mannesmann hole defect were analyzed by using a response surface method. The maximum effective plastic strain at center point of specimen is utilized for the prediction of the starting point of crack occurrence, which is suggested by the comparison of integrals of four different ductile fracture models between the histories of the effective plastic strain at center point. It was revealed that the principal stress at the center is the dominant element to the increase of the effective plastic strain. It was also verified by the simulation results from the comparison of experiment and simulation. It is provided that the forming angle of 25 degrees and the spreading angle of 1 degree can be a proper design condition without an occurrence of internal hole defect and an excessive slip.
Structural and electronic properties of bulk GaN with nitrogen vacancy($V_N$), oxygen substitution on nitrogen site($O_N$), and complex of nitrogen vacancy and oxygen substitution on nitrogen site($V_N-O_N$) were investigated using the first principle calculations. It was found that stability of defect formation is dependent on the epilayer growth conditions. The complex of $V_N-O_N$ is energetically the most favorable state in a condition of Ga-rich, however, oxygen substitution in nitrogen site is the most favorable state in N-rich condition. The electronic property of complex with negative charge states at $\Gamma$ point was changed from semiconductor to metal. On the contrary, the properties of nitrogen vacancy except for neutral charge state have shown the semiconductor characteristics at $\Gamma$ point. In the oxygen substitution on nitrogen site, the energy differences between conduction band minimum and Fermi level were smaller than that of defect-free GaN.
In this study, the improved throughput and stability in device fabrication could be obtained by applying CMP process to STi structue in 0.18 um semiconductor device. To employ the CMP process in STI structure, the Reverse Moat Process used to be added after STI Fill, as a result, the process became more complex and the defect were seriously increased than they had been,. Removal rate of each thin film in STI CMP was not uniform, so, the device must have been affected. That is, in case of excessive CMP, the damage on the active area was occurred, and in the case of insufficient CMP nitride remaining was happened on that area. Both of them deteriorated device characteristics. As a solution to these problems, the development of slurry having high removal rate and high oxide to nitride selectivity has been studied. The process using this slurry afford low defect levels, improved yield, and a simplified process flow. In this study, we evaluated the 'High Selectivity Slurry' to do a global planarization without reverse moat step, and also we evaluated EPD(Eend Point Detection) system with which 'in-situ end point detection' is possible.
To make a mobile robot to get to a goal point, path which connects the mobile robot and the goal point is needed and a path planning is necessary. There are various kinds of a path planning. Well known methods are skeleton method, cell decomposition method and potential field method. But each method has both fortes and defects. In this paper, we propose a new method of path planning to find a path for mobile robot. It is obtained by modifying a Voronoi diagram. An original Voronoi diagram can make a safe path but its result is not satisfied. First defect of path, finded by the original Voronoi diagram, is sulplus of safty which make a path longer. Second defect is that the original Voronoi diagram method has a problem of connecting the Voronoi daigram with start/goal point of mobile robot. These defects are removed in proposed algorithm in this paper. We define a function to show the quality of paths. And by computer simulation, paths are compared and its result are shown.
The stochiometric mix of evaporating materials for the $CdGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $CdGa_2Se_4$ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system. The source and substrate temperature were $630^{\circ}C\;and\;420^{\circ}C$, respectively. After the as-grown single crystal $CdGa_2Se_4$ thin films were annealed in Cd-, Se-, and Ga -atmospheres, the origin of point defects of single crystal $CdGa_2Se_4$ thin films has been investigated by PL at 10 K. The native defects of $V_{Cd},\;V_{Se},\;Cd_{int},\;and\;Se_{int}$ obtained by PL measurements were classified as donors or acceptors. And we concluded that the heat-treatment in the Cd-atmosphere converted single crystal $CdGa_2Se_4$ thin films to an optical p-type. Also, we confirmed that Ga in $CdGa_2Se_4$/GaAs did not form the native defects because Ga in single crystal $CdGa_2Se_4$ thin films existed in the form of stable bonds.
