Flow over a protruding surface is investigated using numerical simulation. We consider flow between two parallel plates with a cube mounted on one side of the channel. As the flow approaches the cube, the adverse pressure gradient produces three-dimensional boundary-layer separation, resulting In the formation of horseshoe vortices. The objective of our study is to clarify both the steady and the unsteady characteristics of the vortex system. As the Reynolds number increases, the structure of the vortices near the cube becomes complex and the number of vortices increases. The distribution of skin friction on the cube-mounted wall reflects the effect of the horseshoe vortices. All these results are consistent with the experimental findings currently available.

The authors propose to use the vortex generators in order to improve of the efficiency for the cambered otter boards. The equipments and testing method of this model test was the same as the previous report. This study was tested for 6 models such as the single cambered, the V-shaped cambered and the slotted cambered otter board without and with vortex generators. The results obtained are as follows: \circled1 C sub(L) of the single cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased about 10% in comparison with that of model without vortex generators, C sub(D) decreased 2%, and L/D increased 5~20%. \circled2 L/D of the V-shaped cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased 10~20% in comparison with that of model without vortex generators. \circled3 C sub(L) of the two slotted cambered model otter board with vortex generators was increased about 20% within an angle of attack 25$^{\circ}$ in comparison with that of without vortex generators, C sub(D) increased 5~20%, and L/D was higher than prototype within an angle of attack 20$^{\circ}$. \circled4 The separation point of the model otter boards with vortex generators was removed back ward a little in comparison with that of the model without vortex generators. \circled5 Flow speed difference of the back side to the front side of model otter boards with vortex generators was increased a little in comparison with that of the models without vortex generators. \circled6 The size of separation zone in case of the model otter boards with vortex generators was decreased about 10% in comparison with that of the models without vortex generators.

Francis turbines are often operated over a wide load range due to high flexibility in electricity demand and penetration of other renewable energies. This has raised significant concerns about the existing designing criteria. Hydraulic turbines are not designed to withstand large dynamic pressure loadings on the stationary and rotating parts during such conditions. Previous investigations on transient operating conditions of turbine were mainly focused on the pressure fluctuations due to the rotor-stator interaction. This study characterizes the synchronous and asynchronous pressure and velocity fluctuations due to rotor-stator interaction and rotating vortex rope during load variation, i.e. best efficiency point to part load and vice versa. The measurements were performed on the Francis-99 test case. The repeatability of the measurements was estimated by providing similar movement to guide vanes twenty times for both load rejection and load acceptance operations. Synchronized two dimensional particle image velocimetry and pressure measurements were performed to investigate the dominant frequencies of fluctuations, vortex rope formation, and modes (rotating and plunging) of the rotating vortex rope. The time of appearance and disappearance of rotating and plunging modes of vortex rope was investigated simultaneously in the pressure and velocity data. The asynchronous mode was observed to dominate over the synchronous mode in both velocity and pressure measurements.
Modifying effects of the rectangular forward step for suppressing the unsteady pressure fluctuation during interaction between the upstream vortical flow with the edge are studied numerically. The vortical flow is modeled by a point vortex, and the unsteady pressure coefficient is obtained from the velocity and the potential field. To investigate the effects of the edge shape the rectangular forward step is chamfered with various angles. Calculation show that the pressure peaks become decreased by increasing the vortex height as well as the chamfering angle. The pressure amplitudes are very sensitive to the change of the initial vortex height. From this study we can find out that the chamfered edge has two effects; the one is that it suppresses the pressure amplitude generated from the edge, and the other is that it decreases the time variation of unsteady pressure fluctuation. These modifying concepts can be applied to attenuate the self-sustained oscillation mechanism at the open cavity flow.
The vortex ventilation system (VV) which uses a rotating finned swirler installed coaxially with the exhaust duct is a very effective local ventilator. VV can enhance the capture depth by a factor of 3-5 compared to the conventional exhaust hood, in the absence of any solid walls nearby. In real situations there may exist ceiling, side wall and floor, all of which can affect the flow field and suction performance by way of the no-slip condition on the walls. 3D CFD simulation was performed in order to see the effect of the floor on the capture performance of the VV. The presence of floor reduced suction flow velocity, and increased the critical rotational speed which is the rotational speed required for stable vortex formation. Flow velocity profile along the axis could be well approximated by a universal functional form when the distance from the exhaust inlet is non-dimensionalized by the distance to the floor. Capture depth, define by the distance from the exhaust inlet to a point of velocity decreased to 10% of that at the inlet, is reduced by about 10% when the floor distance is 6 times the exhaust hood diameter.
($^{11}$B NMR measurements have been performed on single crystals of LuNi$_2$B$_2$C superconductor to investigate vortex lattice structures and dynamical behavior. The spectrum in the superconducting state is significantly broadened by local field inhomogeneity due to the vortex lattice and the peak point of the spectrum shifts toward low magnetic field due to the imperfect field penetration. The linewidth of the spectrum reflecting local field variation is much smaller than expected for conventional vortex lattices and shows peculiar increase at low temperature. Furthermore, the transverse relaxation rate, 1/T$_2$, probing the slow motion of vortices, exhibits a single peak as temperature decreases. These prominent results highlight significant fluctuation of vortices even for this low T$_c$, and nearly isotropic 3D superconductor.
Fan performances are obtained with various tip clearance gaps and stagger angles of the rotor. A tested fan is an axial-type fan of which the casing diameter is 806 mm. Two different rotors are applied to this test. One is designed on the basis of the free vortex method along the radial direction and the other is designed using the forced vortex method. The operating conditions are varied to the ultimate off-design point as well as the deign point. Overall efficiency, total pressure and input power are compared with the tip clearance gaps and different stagger angle. The experimental results show that changing of the stagger angle has minor influence to the performance when the same rotor is applied. When the tip clearance gap is less than 5% of the rotor span, the overall efficiency, total pressure loss and input power reduction are varied linearly with the variation of the tip clearance gaps. On the design point, the overall efficiency is decreased to the rate of 2.8-2.9 to the increasing of the tip clearance, but the changing rate of the overall efficiency is alleviated when the fan operates at off-design points. In particular, this rate is more quickly declined on a fan with the rotor designed using the forced vortex method. The result of the total pressure shows that the pressure reduction rate is a 0.08-0.1 according to the tip clearance, and additionally the input power reduction rate is a 0.045-0.065 at design point.

Analysis of flow phenomena in a centrifugal compressor impeller has been carried out with numerical simulation to understand the physics of flow near stall. Near stall point, tip leakage flow spills ahead of the leading edge of adjacent blade and other leakage flow passes over the clearance of the adjacent blade instead of rolling up into vortex within the passage. The tip leakage flow at the mid chord of impeller blade impinges against the pressure surface of the adjacent blade and then rolls up into vortex within the passage, which blocks the flow passage and generates viscous loss. The spillage of leakage flow ahead of the adjacent blade generates the recirculation of flow entering the impeller, which causes the power transferred into the flow by the impeller to decrease and blocks the flow passage. Near diffuser hub wall, flow recirculation occurs. As operating point goes to stall point, the core of recirculation approaches the impeller exit The length rises to peak point and then drops with mass flow reduction, while the height steadily rises.

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate on a surface by interaction of a pair of vortices. The test facility consists of a boundary-layer wind tunnel with a vortex introduced into the flow by half-delta wings(vortex generators) protruding from the surface. In order to control the strength of the two longitudinal vortices, the angles of attack of the vortex generators are varied from 20 degree to 45 degree, but spacings between the vortex generators are fixed to 4 cm. The 3-dimensional mean velocity downstream of the vortex generators is measured by a five-hole pressure probe, and the hue-capturing method using the thermochromatic liquid crystals has been used to provide the local distribution of the heat transfer coefficient. By using the method mentioned above, the following conclusions are obtained from the present experiment. The boundary layer is thinned in the regions where the secondary flow is directed toward the wall and thickened where it is directed away from the wall. The peak augmentation of the local heat transfer coefficient occurs in the downwash region near the point of minimum boundary-layer thickness. Streamwise distributions of averaged Stanton number on the measurement planes show very similar trends for all the cases(${\beta}=20^{circ},\;30^{\circ}\;and\;45^{\circ}$).

The propulsive characteristics of oscillating flat plates are investigated using a discrete vortex method. The plates and their wakes are represented by discrete point vortices. To analyze the closely coupled aerodynamic interference between the plates, a vortex core model and a vortex core addition scheme are combined. A calculated wake shape for a flat plate in heaving oscillation is compared with flow visualization. The effect of wake shapes on the propulsive characteristics of the plates in pitching oscillation is investigated. The propulsive characteristics of oscillating plates with three cases (1. one is stationary and another is oscillating, 2. both oscillating in phase, 3. both oscillating out of phase) are calculated. The plates oscillating out of phase showed the largest thrust force among the three cases.
