Permeability was not represented as a simple function of the difference between confining pressure($P_c$) and pore pressure($P_p$). The effective pressure($P_e$) for measurements of the permeability is shown to be $P_c-{\alpha}P_p$, where $\alpha$ is a coefficient of effective pressure. Local values of $\alpha$ were determined at intervals along the pressure path which range 25MPa to 55MPa. The values of $\alpha$ ranged 0.65 to 1.09 for Pocheon granite and 1.20 to 1.43 for Wonju granite. Also, the value of $\alpha$ calculated by the cross-plotting method was 0.90 for Pocheon granite, 1.59 for Wonju granite and 4.35 for jointed Pocheon granite. $\alpha$ was found to be stress-history dependent.

Flow pump technique was used in order to determine the soil-water characteristic curve of weathered granite soils in Pocheon area. This technique enables measurement to be more convenient and accurate as it is based on the CU condition of triaxial compression test. Besides, it is also able to measure dry and moisture curves continuously since the test is controled by means of a computer automatically. In this study, not only a hydraulic conductivity of weathered granite soils at fully saturated state in Pocheon area, but also a soil-water characteristic curve throughout unsaturate flow tests were determined. In addition, Brooks and Corey's model and Genuchten's model were used to simulate the soil-water characteristic curve. On the basis of the simulation an unsaturate hydraulic conductivity was predicted.
Deformation behavior and microcrack development due to uniaxial compressive cyclic loading in the Pocheon granite were investigated using the ultrasonic velocity measurements and the differential strain analysis(DSA). Most microcracks were developed along the direction parallel to the loading axis. Microcracks developed at the early stage of cyclic loading were formed by propagation of pre-existing cracks. Ultrasonic velocity measurement, DSA and measurement of permanent deformation are good tools to represent microcrack development in rock. Since results from each method are slightly different, microcrack development should be interpreted from all three methods. The magnitude of microcracks developed at the early stage of cyclic loading under 80% loading level is twice compared with those under 70% loading level. The highest volumetric crack strain is about 3000, indicating that the Pocheon granite will fail with 0.3% occupation of microcrack in volume.
We have studied the characteristics of rock cleavage for the Pocheon granite with Jurassic emplacement age. Photomicrographs were used to observe and analyze microcracks from the granite. Three sets of microcrack planes are recognized; (1) the rift plane developed parallel to the principal sets of microcracks, (2) the grain plane parallel to the secondary sets of microcracks, (3) the hardway plane perpendicular to both rift and grain planes. The microcracks developed in the granite shows higher polution, mean length and density in the order of rift plane, grain plane and hardway plane. The fracturing characteristics of the granite are closely related to the development of these three planes.
Magnetite deposit of Pocheon Iron Mine is a contact replacement skarn deposit embedded in the carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) which are intruded by granite porphyry. The shape of ore bodies is sweet potato-like and/or irregular massive form; D-ore body, the biggest one is of $180m{\times}40m{\times}200m$ in size. The ore is in general of high grade. The location of the ore bodies is controlled by the fault which strikes north south and dips $60^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$ to the west. A regular distribution of mineralized zones is recognized in order of outward (hanging wall side) from granite porphyry as follows: compact fine-grained skarn, limesilicates, magnetite ore body, marble, limesilicates, pyritized meta-sediments.
In this study, laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests are carried out to evaluate the effects of the cleavage anisotropy of Pocheon granite. Breakdown pressure is smaller when cracks are generated to the direction of rift plane in constant pressurization rate condition because of higher microcracks density. Besides not only injection rate changes but also the amount of injection pressure for fracture initiation and crack expansion is detected while testing due to internal deformation. Pressurization rate is higher while hydraulic fracture testing with constant injection rate condition in case of the specimen which has rift plane perpendicular to borehole because there are much flow paths to penetrate compared to the specimen which has hardway plane perpendicular to borehole. Observation by X-ray CT scanning shows that almost all of cracks due to hydraulic fracturing are generated to the direction of plane which has higher microcrack density that is rift plane or grain plane.
Granite rock is reported to have three orthogonal anistoropic planes i.e., rift, grain induced by microcrack characteristics and mineral arrangement. We investigated the influence of thus fabric anisotropy in granite on elastic wave properties using free-free resonance test to obtain unconstrained compression wave velocity, shear velocity, Poisson ratio and damping ratio. As a result, Rod wave velocity is more dependent on anisotropy of granite due to microcrack distribution than shear wave velocity. In addition, anisotropy of Poisson ratio and damping ratio is also observed with respect to three anisotropic planes.
The wavy extinction of quartz can be used as a standard indicator showing the degree of rock deformation. In determine the degree of rock deformation, the intensity of wavy extinction (IWE) of quartz was measured using polarizing microscope, digital camera, and NIH Image program. This method was applied to the granite of Pocheon-Gisanri area, which are divided three type; biotite granite (Gb), garnet biotite granite (Ggb) and two mica granite (Gtm). In this study, measurement of wavy extinction was proceeded Ggb in eastern part and Gb in western part based on the Pocheoneup. The result was that Gb shows low deformation degree below D2, and Ggb represents high deformation degree above D3, generally showing that increasing deformation degree from northwest to southeast in the studied area. It is suggested that the fault which penetrated Ggb in 1/250,000 geological map affected the deformation degree of Ggb.
A transient pulse methos has been used to measure the permeability of Pocheon granite pre-heated from $25^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$ at effective pressure up to 32MPa. The permeability of whole rock ranged from 0.72 $\mu$d at 10MPa to 0.20 $\mu$d at 32MPa. The permeability of rock heated to $600^{\circ}C$ ranged from 18.07$\mu$d at 10MPa to 6.39$\mu$d at 32MPa. Confining pressure has greater effects on the rocks thermally treated to lower thermal-cycle temperatures than on the higher thermally treated rocks. The increase of permeability is most pronounced between 40$0^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. Below 40$0^{\circ}C$, permeability increase is expected to be associated with the formation of new cracks and widening of preexisting cracks, whereas above 40$0^{\circ}C$, permeability increase is expected to reflect widening of cracks. Using the equivalent channel model, author shows that the exponent n in the relationship relating the permebility(k) to porosity($\phi$) by k∝$$\phi$^n$ falls in the range 2.7$\leq$n$\leq$3.0.
Pocheon, Keochang and Sangju granite samples of different granularity and mineralogical composition were thermally treated at pre-determined temperature of $600^{\circ}C$. Thermally-induced microcracks were characterized using an optical microscopy and their effects on the deformation behavior of thermally cycled samples were studied performing compressive mechanical tests. Optical observations shows that by $600^{\circ}C$ nearlly all crystal boundaries open and the new intracrystalline cracks form in the more grains. The intracrystalline cracks are most pronounced at thermally treated Pocheon and Keochang granite samples. Results from mechanical tests represents negative lateral strains, which give negative Poisson's ratios. It is the most probable that negative lateral strains are produced by residual stresses induced during cooling.
