In Korea, there is a general lack of information available on air emissions from industry. The reasons for this include the lack of regulatory requirements for emission monitoring, limited information on specific industries, and difficulties in monitoring certain sources. This paper presents the first detailed air pollutant emission factors from composite wood product manufacturing in Korea. This study introduced emission factors for wood-based panels such as plywood, particle board (PB), and medium density fiberboard (MDF). The emission factors of particulate matters (PM) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from MDF were higher than that from other wood products. The concentration of total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) for hot press from wood-based panels was higher than drying or gluing processes. Emissions data from NPIP were compared to the data from the suggested emission factors in this study and the US EPA's. The data from our emission factors were closer to the observed results than the data using the US EPA's emission factor.
The purposes of this study were, first, to investigate retention levels of toxic elements and oxide individual plies for each panel and, second, to examine disproportioning of individual toxic elements Thirty five water gum plywood panels were treated with a copper-chromium-arsenic preservative (CCA) by the soaking process as the treament time were applied. Such individual plies at a distance of 2.5cm, 7.5cm from the edge were assayed for CuO, $CrO_3$, and $As_2O_5$ on the basis of copper, chromium and arsenic content by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. In these experiments, 12mm thickness plywood panels made of water gum, which were selling, were selected for the preservative treatment. Treating solutions were prepared for 10%, dilute solution of copper-chromium-arsenic preservative and then 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours soaking trements in CCA preservative were applied. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The retention of total oxide in the face and back plies (1+7) retained more than the retention of total oxide in the other plies. The total oxide retention for the individual plies except the face and back plies (1+7) was showed in the following orders; cross plies (3+5), cross plies (2+6), core ply (4). 2. The retentions of total oxide increased as the increase of treatment time. The CCA treated plywood retained high levels of total oxide retention in the face and back plies (1+7). 3. All the retentions in the face and back plies (1+7) is over 5Kg/$m^3$, New Zealand Timber Preservation Standards Specification, and after 6 hours, the retentions in the cross plies (3+5) is over 4. The relative penetration of copper, chromium, and arsenic were not affected by the treatment time. The proportion of arsenic decreased in relation to both copper and chromium and the proportion of copper increased in relation to both chromium and arsenic. 5. A disproportioning of copper, chromium occurred with longer distance from edge, and with longer distance from edge the leachability resistance of CCA treated specimens decreased. After 6 hours (soaking time), the proportion of active elements at a distance of 2.5cm from the edge was consistent. And after 24 hours-soaking, the proportion of active elements at a distance of 7.5cm from the edge was consistent.
In recent years, the use of cross laminated timber (CLT) has been evolving. In addition, CLT manufactured with various species such as Japanese cedar has been developed to utilize the local resources in each country. However most factories in Japan produce CLT by bonding the laminae in width direction for orthogonal layers, where grain of element is perpendicular to the grain of outer layer, and this process is considered to be one of the factors that reduce productivity. A new wood based material (hereinafter referred to as Ply-lam) using wooden panel such as plywood for the orthogonal layer was developed in order to improve productivity in CLT manufacturing and improve quality. Japanese cypress lamina was used for the parallel layer, where grain of element is parallel to the grain of outer layer, of CLT and Korean larch plywood was used for the orthogonal layer, in order to effectively use Korean larch and expand the utilization of Japanese cypress. The cross-sectional construction of the Ply-lam was 5-layers 5-plies, and the dimensions were 1000 mm (width) × 150 mm (depth) × 4000 mm (length). As a performance evaluation of the manufactured Ply-lam, strength tests such as out-of-plane bending, in-plane bending, out-of-plane shearing and in-plane shearing tests were carried out. As the result of this study, Ply-lam composed of Japanese cypress lamina panels and Korean larch plywood showed very higher out-of-plane bending strength compared to the standard strength of CLT. And the result obtained in other tests seems to show a sufficiently high value.
In this study, for using effectively domestic (temperate) small and medium diameter logs as a wooden floorboard, cross-laminated wood panels were manufactured using domestic larch and tulip woods as a base material for teak and merbau wood flooring, and static bending strength performances were measured to investigate the applicability as the base materials of wooden flooring in place of plywood. Static bending MOE was much influenced by the strength performances of the top layer lamina than that of the laminae for base materials. Bending MOR showed the higher values in tulip wood that was hardwoods than in larch wood that was softwoods regardless of the strength performances of the top layer laminae, and it was found that the values were much influenced by the strength performances of the base materials used in the core and bottom layers. However these values were 1.4-2.5 times higher values than the bending strength of the wooden floorboards specified in KS, it was found that it can be sufficiently applied to the base materials of wooden floorboards in place of plywood.
Demand of natural interior finishing material has been widely sprayed in nowadays because many weak people as children, pregnant women, and elder people are being struggled with sick house syndrome due to volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene, etc. Our research group developed a no-added formaldehyde adhesive for wood-based panels from mainly rice powder and some additives in the previous study for abating sick house syndrome. Since the rice powder adhesive provides a good source of nutrients with microorganisms, it was suspected a susceptibility of the rice powder adhesive to fungal and sapstain attack. We evaluated anti-sapstain activity of the rice powder adhesives modified by adding wood preservatives. We modified the rice powder adhesive by adding three different types of anti-sapstain preservatives at three different concentrations to assess their anti-sapstin activity. The bonding strengths of the modified rice powder adhesives were still outstanding performance on all samples. Moreover, the plywood manufactured with the modified rice powder adhesive satisfied outdoor use requirement for ordinary plywood (KS F3101, Korean Standard). The results obtained showed that at least 3% of preservative should be added to the rice powder adhesive to obtain effective anti-sapstain activity.
Five type boxes manufactured from cement(A), wood panel(B), charcoal-packed wood panel(C), plywood panel(D) and charcoal-packed plywood panel(E) were prepared. Relationship of preservation characteristic of strawberry and relative humidity, and properties of thermal and sound insulations in the boxes were examined. During the experimental duration, relative humidity in the cement box was highest and lowest in the charcoal-packed wood panel box. Weight loss of strawberry was greatest in charcoal-packed wood panel box and very little in cement box. In the boxes with charcoal-packed wood panel box and very little in cement box. In the boxes with charcoal, strawberry was preserved for 10 days without getting mold, but in cement box it was covered with mold in 3 days. The charcoal-packed boxes showed higher thermal insulation property than the cement box. There were no significant differences in the property of sound insulation among the 5 type boxes. Consequently, it is suggested that charcoal-packed wood panels can be used for a better ecomaterial.

Formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from wood-based panels that have been made using wood particles, wood fiber, wood chips, formaldehyde-based resins and so on. In this study, we examined formaldehyde and total VOCs (TVOC) emission behaviors for plywood overlaid with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard (PL), and two kinds of surface materials (decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil) that were adhered onto the PL that named DPL and PPL. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) was used to overlay the decorative veneer and pre-impregnated finishing foil on the plywood with water-soluble phenolic resin impregnated linerboard by a hot press instrument. The debonding test and accelerated aging test were conducted to assess their mechanical properties. Formaldehyde and TVOC emission concentrations were measured using the FLEC method and a VOC Analyzer, respectively. The debonding test results of PL, DPL and PPL were 1.2, 1.5, and $0.5N/mm^2$, respectively. The surface appearance of the samples were not changed after the accelerated aging test. The PL and DPL exhibited reduced formaldehyde and TVOC emission levels, respectively. In the case of PPL, the VOC value was relatively higher than those of PL and DPL.
The primary objective of this research was to investigate optimum manufacturing condition of thin composite panels composed of sawdust, polyethylene film and polypropylene net. At the study the experiment was designed to make thin board in which sawdust offers effectiveness as core composing material, polyethylene as adhesive with added urea resin, and polypropylene as stiffness and flexibility in the composition panel. 100 types of thin composite panels were manufactured according to press-lam and mat-forming process of various hot pressing conditions(pressure, temperature and time). They were tested and compared with control boards on bending properties(MOR, MOE, SPL, WML), internal bond strength, thickness swelling, linear expansion and water absorption. At the same time the visual inspections of each types of panels were accomplished. The physical and mechanical properties of composite types passed by visual inspection were analyzed by Tukey's studentized range test. From the statistical analysis, the optimum manufacturing condition of thin composite panels were selected. Compared with two manufacturing processes, mat-forming process performed better than press-lam process in all tested properties. The optimum manufacturing conditions resulted from the experiment and statistical analysis were able to determine as following: the press temperature was shown the most good result at 130$^{\circ}C$ in mat forming process and 140$^{\circ}C$ press lam process, the press time 4 min in both processes, but the press pressure was 25-10kg/$cm^2$ in mat forming and 15k/$cm^2$ press lam process.
