  • Unsteady lift measurements were carried out in order to investigate the effects of phase difference and reduced frequency of a dragonfly-type model with two pairs of wing. A load-cell was employed to measure the lift generated by a plunging motion of the dragonfly-type model with the incidence angles of 0$^{circ}$. Experimental conditions are as follows: phase differences between fore- and hind-wings are 0$^{circ}$, 90$^{circ}$, 180$^{circ}$, and 270$^{circ}$, and reduced frequencies are 0.075, 0.15 and 0.225, respectively. The freestream velocity was 143 m/sec and corresponding chord Reynolds number was $3.4{\times}10^3$. The variation of phase-averaged lift coefficients during one cycle of the wing motion is presented. Results show that the total value of the positive lift coefficient during one cycle of the wing motion is the largest at the phase difference of 90$^{circ}$, and that the maximum lift coefficient and lift coefficient per unit of time increases with reduced frequency.

  • Since its invention at TWI in 1991, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has become a major joining process in the aerospace, railway and ship building industries especially in the fabrication of aluminium alloys. In an attempt to optimize the friction stir welding process of Al alloys for extrusion Aluminium carbody of HEMU-400X (Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series), effects of joining parameters such as tool rotating speed, plunging depth and dwelling time on the weld joints properties were evaluated. Experimental tests were carried out for butt joined Al plates. A wide range of joining conditions could be applied to join Al alloys for Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with an insufficient heat input. The microstructures of welds have dynamic-recrystallized grain similar to stir zone in FSW weld. For sound joints without defects, at the rotation speed of 700 rpm with different welding speeds, the tensile strengths of the Stir Zone(SZ) were almost the same, 80% of those of the base metal. • As the wave impinges on and overtops the structure, a large highly aerated region is created in front of the structure and water splashs on top of the structure. The broken wave in front of the structure and associated green water on top of the structure are highly aerated containing not only a large number of bubbles but also very large sizes of bubbles. In this paper, the velocity field of the highly aerated region and the splashing water on the top is measured using a modified PIV method incorporating the traditional PIV method with the shadowgraphy technigue by correlating the ' texture ' of the bubble images. The velocity fields of a plunging wave impacting on a structure in a two-dimensional wave flume is measured. It is found that the maximum fluid particle velocity in flout of the structure during the impinging process is about 1.5 times the phase speed of the wave, while the maximum horizontal velocity above the top is less than the phase speed, It is also found that the dam breaking solution does not work well in predicting the green water velocity.

  • In general, the dam break problem is demonstrated to simulate open-channel disturbance due to large violent waves. These days, the large violent waves at shore and coastline can be seen frequently such like tsunami. The conventional computational fluid dynamics program based on Grid system, can be used to simulate this problem with large deformation of free surface in the restricted condition due to its limitation. The particle method based on fully Lagrangian approach is able to simulate large deformation of free surface by tracking each particles. In this study, the simulation of disturbance of mobile-bed due to large violent waves was investigated by using particle method.

  • A two dimensional negatively buoyant flow from a shallow channel into rectangular ponds is analysed numerically by a finite difference scheme in a stretched coordinate system. In rectangular ponds, the confuguration of plunge flow largely depends on the densimetric Froude number, $Fr_e$, of the inflow. The velocity of front of the plunging flow increases with increasing negative buoyanty(decrease of $Fr_e$). The location of stable plunge point and maximun travel distance of plunge point are found to be a function of dimensionless time and densimetric Froude number. Large vortices develop on the both sides of negative buoyant flow or plunge flow.

  • Since 1980's, fishery household population have been continuously in a down slope with a 5$\%$ annual decreasing rate in Korea. With a particular situation that the scale of over 60s population has been soaring compared with that of under 16 aged population plunging, some difficulties have been raised with the respect of labor supply into fishery communities. This study is aimed at analyzing the tendency of fisheries population with the change of economic development rates and prospect a future fisheries population with the consideration of present decreasing rate. Model results indicate that the tendency of future fishery household population would be decreased by 4.96$\%$ annually through a decade from 2000. Interestingly, it is predicted that the decreasing rate of male fishery household population would be faster than that of female. Consequently, women would hold a greater part in Fishery household population in 2010. In addition, the fishery household population of 40s and 50s would increase from 36$\%$ to 49$\%$, that of over 60s from 21$\%$ to 37$\%$. In conclusion, as a population over 40's encompass almost 90$\%$ in the total population, the fishing communities have a difficulty in shortage of the young workforce.

  • The Morison's formula has been commonly used in the determination of wave forces of sinusoidal waves acting on coastal or ocean structures of pile-supported type. In the case that plunging breakers are incident, the structures are subjected to impulsive breaking wave forces which are normally much larger than the Morison's. However, the impulsive breaking wave forces act in a very short time, and hence a dynamic structural analysis should be done to determine whether or not to include the forces in the design force items. In the present study, numerical methods for calculating the dynamic response of a vertically located cylindrical pile are developed. Static and dynamic displacements are then compared through several example analyses varying the structural properties of pile.

  • For the purpose of technological analysis in the marine accidents and their prevention, IMO have made it obligatory to load VDR which is similar to the black box in aircraft. However, in case of body sinkage, capsizing, stranding and plunging which are almost 10% of marine accidents, it is difficult to take out the necessary data from the VDR in order to analyze the cause of them. Therefore, this paper apply the navigation dangerousness evaluation technology to the VDR to improve its performance. And we suggest that the vertical acceleration which is one of the factors for evaluating seakeeping performance of a ship is to be added in the existing VDR record data recommended by IMO.

  • The mature zygotic embryos of the Hevea brasiliensis were cryopreserved through the use of the vitrification and encapsulation/dehydration techniques. In all the experiments, the zygotic embryos were pre-cultured for three days in the MS medium supplemented with 0.3 M sucrose before they were used for the cryopreservation technique. In the vitrification procedure, the effect of the plant vitrification solutions (PVS2 and PVS3) and exposure time were studied. The highest survival rate (88.87%) and regrowth (66.33%) were achieved when the precultured zygotic embryos were incubated in a loading solution for 20 minutes at $0^{\circ}C$. They were subsequently exposed to PVS2 for 120 minutes at $0^{\circ}C$ and plunged directly into liquid nitrogen. Cryopreservation by the encapsulation-dehydration method was successfully done by leaving the encapsulated zygotic embryos in a laminar flow for 4 hours prior to plunging into a LN. The survival rate and regrowth of the encapsulated zygotic embryos were 37.50% and 27.98%, respectively. The cryopreserved zygotic embryos were able to develop into whole plants.

  • The present study examines similarity of behavior between an overtopping wave generated by a plunging wave and a dam-break flow through hydraulic model tests. The dam-break flow has been employed to estimate the overtopping effect on the basis of the dam-break flow's behavior similar to the overtopping. In this study, the overtopping velocity was measured by a modified image technique using bubble and bubble texture images called bubble image velocitmetry. From the measurements, the vertical profiles of horizontal overtopping velocity at cross-sections along the deck were presented and discussed. Maximum velocity and depth-averaged velocity at each cross-section were compared with an analytical solution solving the dam-break flow, Ritter's solution. The initial water depth of importance for the solution was determined from the tested wave condition and the overtopping measurements. The comparison shows that the solution with the initial water depth estimated using the front velocity of the overtopping wave is in good agreements with the measurements.
