Exhaust plume effects on longitudinal aerodynamics of missile were investigated by wind tunnel tests using a solid plume simulator and CFD analyses with both the solid plume and air jet plumes. Approximate plume boundary prediction technique was used to produce the outer shape of the solid plumer and chamber conditions and nozzle shapes of the air jet plumes were determined through plume modeling technique to compensate the difference in thermodynamic properties between air and real plume. From comparisons among turbulence models in case of external flow interaction with the air jet plume, Spalart-Allmaras model turned out to give accurate result and to be less grid-dependent. Effects induced by the plume were evaluated through the computations with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model and the air jet plume to account for various ratios of chamber and ambient pressure and Reynolds number under the flight test condition.
Accurate assessment of the effect of jet plume on the boattail pressure drag of transonic airbreathing missiles is very important to reduce drag and to satisfy the flight range and the required maneuver. Numerical results of drag analysis for boattail and base pressures due to jet plume are presented considering the turbulence modeling. Drag assessment due to the size of jet plume, the conditions of the exhaust gas, the configurations of the boattail, and transonic mach numbers is included.
A variety of input parameters are taken into consideration while performing a Level 3 PSA. Some parameters related to plume segments, spatial grids, and particle size distribution have flexible input formats. Fine modeling performed by splitting a number of segments or grids may enhance the accuracy of analysis but is time-consuming. Analysis speed is highly important because a considerably large number of calculations is required to handle Level 2 PSA scenarios for a single-unit or multi-unit Level 3 PSA. This study developed a sensitivity analysis supporting interface called MACCSsense to compare the results of the trials of plume segmentation with the results of the base case to determine its impact (in terms of time and accuracy) and to support the development of a modeling approach, which saves calculation time and improves accuracy. MACCSense is an automation tool that uses a large amount of plume segmentation analysis results obtained from MUST Converter and Mr. Manager developed by KAERI to generate a sensitivity report that includes impact (time and accuracy) by comparing them with the base-case result. In this study, various plume segmentation approaches were investigated, and both the accuracy and speed of offsite consequence analysis were evaluated using MACCS as a consequence analysis tool. A simultaneous evaluation revealed that execution time can be reduced using multi-threading. In addition, this study can serve as a framework for the development of a modeling strategy for plume segmentation in order to perform accurate and fast offsite consequence analyses.

The real-time modeling system, named AirWatch System, has been developed to evaluate the environmental impact from a large source. It consists of stack TMS (TeleMetering System) that measures the emission data from the source, AWS (Automatic Weather Station) that monitors the weather data and computer system with the dispersion modeling software. The modeling theories used in the system are Gaussian plume and puff models. The Gaussian plume model is used for the dispersion in the simple terrain with a point meteorological data while the puff model is for the dispersion in complex terrain with three dimensional wind fields. The AirWatch System predicts the impact of the emitted pollutants from the large source on the near-by environment on the real -time base and the alarm is issued to control the emission rate if the calculated concentrations exceed the modeling significance level.

Dispersion coefficient preprocessing schemes have been examined to improve plume dispersion model performance in complex coastal areas. The performances of various schemes for constructing the sigma correction order were evaluated through estimations of statistical measures, such as bias, gross error, R, FB, NMSE, within FAC2, MG, VG, IOA, UAPC and MRE. This was undertaken for the results of dispersion modeling, which applied each scheme. Environmental factors such as sampling time, surface roughness, plume rising, plume height and terrain rolling were considered in this study. Gaussian plume dispersion model was used to calculate 1 hr $SO_2$ concentration 4 km downwind from a power plant in Boryeung coastal area. Here, measured data for January to December of 2002 were obtained so that modelling results could be compared. To compare the performances between various schemes, integrated scores of statistical measures were obtained by giving weights for each measure and then summing each score. This was done because each statistical measure has its own function and criteria; as a result, no measure can be taken as a sole index indicative of the performance level for each modeling scheme. The best preprocessing scheme was discerned using the step-wise method. The most significant factor influencing the magnitude of real dispersion coefficients appeared to be sampling time. A second significant factor appeared to be surface roughness, with the rolling terrain being the least significant for elevated sources in a gently rolling terrain. The best sequence of correcting the sigma from P-G scheme was found to be the combination of (1) sampling time, (2) surface roughness, (3) plume rising, (4) plume height, and (5) terrain rolling.

This study treats the analysis of the performance and the design of plume abatement wet/dry cooling tower with dry type heat exchanger using a numerical method. A two-dimensional analysis is performed using the finite volume method for mechanical draft counterflow and crossflow tower. For a coupling problem between water and air system, a turbulent two phase flow is considered. Effectiveness-NTU method is used for modeling of the dry type heat exchanger. The parameter change simulations of the outer wall shape, the relative flowrate of air, and attachment of an air mixer are performed to examine the effect on plume abatement. It is found that if the relative air flowrate ratio and the adequate air mixer type are chosen well in addition to the ratio of water to air flowrate, the loss of the cooling capacity and the additional cost are reduced and the plume is abated.

Complex terrain which is rather typical topographic character in Korea would greatly influence the dispersion of air pollutant. In this study, we investigated how the complex terrain in the vicinity of the coal-fired plant affects the air dispersion modeling results by using several US EPA models: SCREEN, CTSCREEN, ISCLT3, ISCST3, and RTDM. Screening analysis was followed by long-term analysis, and the plume movement over the terrain was precisely tracked for selected cases. Screening analysis revealed that the highest concentration of sulfur dioxide occurs at the downwind distance of 1.3 km under the unstable conditions with weak winds. However, this highest level of $SO_2$ could be raised by 4 times even in the presence of a hill of 170 m at a distance of 2 to 3 km. Seasonal and annual average concentrations predicted with the ISCLT3, ISCST3, and RTDM models showed a rapid incrase of $SO_2$ levels in front of the high mountains which are located more than 15 km away fromt the source. The highest concentrations predicted with ISCST3 were significantly higher than those with ISCLT3 and RTDM mainly because ISCST3 chooses simple-terrain model calculations for receptors between stack height and plume height. Although the highest levels under the stable conditions were usually found in the areas beyond 15 km or more, their absolute values were not so high due to enough dispersion effects between the source and the receptors.
The precise calculation of gas absorption coefficient in the radiative transfer equation is very important to the prediction of radiative heat transfer induced from liquid engine plume in view of base insulation design. For this purpose, the WNB model for gas absorption coefficient is described with the selection of important parameters and then the calculated results are compared with those of SNB model for validation. Total emissivity, narrow band averaged intensity and total intensity are calculated and compared to the results of SNB model. As results, the total emissivity and the total intensity are well matched within 3.1% and roughly 5 % error, respectively. Moreover, the gas modeling database is constructed with estimation of the combustion gas composition of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ for liquid engine plume.
