  • Metagonimus yokogawai (Katsurada, 1912) Katsurada, 1912 (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) is parasitic in the small intestine of mammals including man and birds in Far Eastern Russia, Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan. In the present study, the metacercariae and adults of M. yokogawai were redescribed to designate a neotype of this fluke together with reviews of previous studies including study histories from the first discovery to now. We particularly, attempted to review the study histories and morphological descriptions of M. yokogawai for the species validity, and compared with the morphological characteristics and life cycles of the closely related species, Metagonimus takahashii and Metagonimus miyatai. Finally, we proposed a differential key for the 8 known Metagonimus species distributed in East Asia. Metacercariae were obtained from the body muscles of sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis) collected in the Asahi River at Takebe-cho, Kita-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Adults were recovered from the small intestine of Syrian golden hamsters, to which the metacercariae had been fed 14 days before. A neotype was selected out of the present adult specimens. The Asahi River at Takebo-cho became the type locality of M. yokogawai. In conclusion, the present review shows that M. yokogawai, M. takahashii, and M. miyatai are valid and discriminated by means of morphological characteristics.

  • An epidemiological survey on Metagonimus yokogawai infection was performed in the eastern coast area of Kangwon province. Formalin-ether concentration technique and Stoll's dilution egg counting method were employed to figure out the prevalence and intensity of M. yokogawai infection and eating habits of inhabitants with raw freshwater fish. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The prevalence rate of M. yokogawai infection was 6.6% among a total of 2, 357 examinees; 8.6% (115 out of 1, 345) in male and 4.0% (40 out of 1, 012) in female. 2. The prevalence rates were different by the streams where the examinees were residing: 17.8% along the area of Ohsip-cheon (stream), 11.8% along Maeup-cheon, 1.7% along Hwasang-cheon, 1.3% along Yeongok-cheon, 0.9% along Namdae-cheon, 0.9% along Sa-cheon and 0% in the other streams (Yongchon-cheon, Kangnung Namdae-cheon and Jusoo.cheon) in decreasing order. 3. By social strata, the positive rate was 8.0% (122 out of 1, 521) in general inhabitants and 3.9% (33 out of 836) in school children. 4. By the intensity of infection by means of EPG counts in feces; the light infection (less than 400/EPG) was 74.1%, moderate infection (401-1, 000/EPG) 17.3% and heavy infection (more than 1, 001/EPG) 8.6%. 5. Twelves out of 50 sweetfish (Plecoglossus altivelis) (24%) caught from the streams in eastern coast of Kangwon-Do were infected with metacercariae of M. yokogawai, and the number of larvae detected were 70.7 per 6sh in average. The metacercarial infection rates in fish were also different by the streams; 100% in Ohsip-cheon of Samcheok-Gun, 14.3% in Sa-cheon, 16.7% in Yeongokcheon of Myeongju-Gun and 0% in Namdae-cheon of Yangyang-Gun, respectively. 6. Six hundred ninety live (695) out of 1, 396 inhabitants and school children (49.8%) were experienced in eating raw freshwater fishes (Plecoglossus altivezis, Triboledon hakonensis, Coreoperca sp., Morose sp., Carassius sp. & Cyprinus sp. and Zacco platypus). The data were assayed with the questionnaire collected from the examinees. In summarizing the above results, it is known that the Ohsip-cheon area of Samcheok-Gun is highly infected region, and the other areas of Kangnung Namdae-cheon, Yeongok-cheon and Yangyang Namdae-cheon are very lowly infected or non-infected regions for M yokogawai infection.

  • The effect of $\alpha-Tocopherol\;(\alpha-Toc)$ level in diet on the biochemical property of sweet smelt, Plecoglossus altivelis, was investigated. The cultured sweet smelt fish were fed two different diets for 8 weeks; a control diet was added $0.01\%$ of $\alpha-Toc$ (CO group) and an experimental diet was added $1.00\%$ of $\alpha-Toc$ (HT group). Both diets were rich in docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), accounting for $12.3-13.2\%$ and $12.1-12.4\%$, respectively. Growth rate (GR) and feed efficiency (FE) were almost no difference between both groups, but female fish of both groups were superior to male fish in GR and FE. Lipid contents of muscle and ovary were high in CO group compared with HT group, but that of testis showed a similar level in both groups. The proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in muscle showed almost no difference in sex and between both groups. In testes, the proportion of PUFA was 1.35 times for HT group to 1.54 times for CO group as much as in ovaries, in which was high approximately 1.5 times compared with muscle. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and hydroxyl (OH) radical levels of plasma were higher in CO group than HT group and superoxide dismutase activity was also slightly high in the former. The intensity of watermelon-like or cucumber -like aroma was related positively with TBARS and OH radical levels in plasma. The level of triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (CHOL) in plasma of CO group was higher than those of HT group. Survival rate was high in CO group with higher level of TG and CHOL in plasma.

  • Some aspects of limno-biology of the five dammed lakes such as Tamyang, Changsong, Kwangju, Naju, and Youngsan Lake along the Yongsan River were investigated from June 1986 to July 1988 for the comparison on the lentic ecosystems in relation to the fish fauna. Sixty four fish species representing 48 genera and 21 families of fishes were collected in these dammed areas, which included 29 species of the family Cyprinidea and 40 speaies of the primary fresh-water fishes. Among, these, 12 species such as Rhodeus Acheilognothus yamatsutae, A canathorhodeus gracilis, Sarcocheilichthys nigripinis morii, S. variegatus wakiyae, Gnathopogon strigatus, Squalidus gracilis majimae, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Cobitis longicorpus sp, Liobagrus mediadiposalis and Odontobutis platycephala are enddmic to Korea. Leiocassis nitidus and Gasterosteus aculeatus which occur in these water areas take note of the zooge rographic study of Korea. The fish species in each of the dammed lakes is in proportion of the scale of the lakes such as 32 species in Thamyang, 40 species in Changsong, 24 species in Kwangju, 35 species in Jaju, and 52 species in Yongsan Lake. The dominant fish species of the 4 upper dammed lakes of Thamyang, Changsong, Kwangju and Naju Lake are Zacco platypus and Rhodeus uyekii, while those of Youngsan Lake are Hemiculter eigenmanni and Carassius auratus. This difference of fish species of those areas suggests that the upper damed lake differ from the lower dammed lakes in the habitable condition of fishes. The migratory fish species have significantly declined and will continue to decline in both population size and number of species in the dammed lakes in near future as a result of the dam construction barriers in the river estuary. The major migratory fishes of this water area are as follows; Anguilla japonica, Plecoglossus altivelis, Hypomesus olidus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Konosirus Punctatus, Coilia ectens, Hemirhampus sajori, Mugil cephalus. Acanthogobius flavimanus, and Takifugu ocellatus.

  • An epidemiological study on Metagenimus yokegawai infection was performed in Samcheok-Bun, Kangwon Province during the period from November 1983 to October 1984. Formalin-ether concentration technique and Stoll's dilution egg counting method were employed to figure out the prevalence and infection intensity of M. yrtkogawai infection. The results are summarized as follow: 1. The Prevalence of M. yokogawai infection was 13.3% among 1,172 examined; 18.0% (114 out of 632) in male and 7.8% (42 out of 540) in female. 2. The Prevalence rates were different by stream; 15.5% in Ohsip-chon (stream), 11.8% in Maeup-chon and 1.6% in Gagok-chon. 3. Along the basin of Oship-chon; 8.2% at the lower reaches in Samcheok-eup, 25.9% at the middle reaches in Miro-myon and 6.2% at the upper reaches in Dogeoe-eup, respectively. 4. By age group, the highest fate (18.3∼20.2%) was observed in 30∼49 years of age (male 24.1∼28.7%, female 11.2∼13.2%). 5. By social strata, the positive rate was 15.0% (120 out of 799) in general inhabitants and 9.7% (36 out of 373) in school children. 6. Intensity by EPG count in feces was 419 in average; the light infection (less than 400 EPG) was 70.4%, moderate infection (401∼1,000 EPG) 19.4% and heavy infection (more than 1,001 EPG) 10.25 respectively. 7. All the 67 sweetfish (length 10.3∼18.5cm) which were caught from Ohsip-stream were infected with metacercariae of M. yokogawai and the number of metacercariae detected were 382 per fish in average (323 in June and 382 in September). 8. Experiences of intake of raw fresh-water fish [Plecoglossus altivelis and Leuciscus (Tribolodon〕 were present in 50.3U (354 out of 704) of the inhabitants along Ohsip-stream according to questionnaire study. The results of this survey indicated that the middle reaches of Ohsip-stream in Miro-myon, Samcheok-gun is the endemic region for M. yokogawai infection.

  • Metagonimus miyatai n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) is described based on adult flukes collected from experimental dogs and hamsters fed with metacercariae encysted in the sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, dace, Tribolodon hakonensis and T. taczanowskii, common fat-minnow. Morocco steindachneri pale chub, Zacco platypus, and dark chub, Zacco temmincki, and on those collected from naturally infected humans. The new species was morphologically compared with M. yokogawai and M. takahashii obtained from experimental animals fed with the sweetflsh and the crucian carp, Cnrossius caressius, respectively. The uterine loops of M. miyatai reached near the posterior end of the body through the space between the two testes, whereas those of M. yokogawai, occupied only the space between the acetabulum and anterior border of two testes. This uterine tubule distribution was similar to that of another closely related species, M. takahashii. However vitellaria of M. miyatai ended in front of the posterior end of the left testis, while those of M. takahcshii reached the posterior end of the left testis and ran it over. By raising M. miyatai as a new species, differentiation of M. yokogawai and M. takahashii became very clear. A key to the species of the genus Metagonimus in the Far East has been proposed.
