SOLAR CYCLE VARIATION OF UPPER THERMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE OVER KING SEJONG STATION, ANTARCTICA

  • A groung Fabry-Perot interferometer has been used to measure atomic oxygen nightglow (OI 630.0nm) from the thermosphere (about 250km) at King Sejong station (KSS, geographic: $62.22^{\circ}$S, $301.25^{\circ}$E; geomagnetic: $50.65^{\circ}$S, $7.51^{\circ}$E), Antarctica. While numerous studies of the thermosphere have been performed on high latitude using ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometers, the thermospheric measurements in the Southern Hemisphere are relatively new and sparse. Therefore, the nightglow measurements at KSS play an important role in extending the thermospheric studies to the Southern Hemisphere. In this study, we investigated the effects of the geomagnetic and solar activities on the thermospheric neutral temperatures that have been observed at KSS in 1989 and 1997. The measured average temperatures are 1400K in 1989 and 800K in 1997, reflecting the influence of the solar activity. The measurements were compared with empirical models, MSIS-86 and semi-empirical model, VSH.

  • Many researches conducted to investigate the relationship between surface emissivity and surface temperature in the past two decades and pointed out that the emissivity play a key role in applying remote sensing data to retrieve surface temperature. The task of surface temperature estimation is so important in many research fields, such as earth energy budgets, evapotranspiration, drought, global change and heat island effect. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop an effective and accurate technique to estimate the emissivity for accurate surface temperature estimations. This study developed an improved emissivity estimation technique for the use of surface temperature retrievals with MODIS data. The result of applying this improved technique using Band 31 of MODIS shows that the accuracy of estimated surface temperatures will be improved. This study also uses MODIS data observed in 2005 to establish the relationship between the surface emissivity correction factor and NDVI. Through the use of these correction factors, the land surface temperature can be retrieved more accurate with MODIS data.

The Analysis of Protection Ratio and Its Effect of Interference-to-Noise Ratio for Digital Microwave System with Diversity

  • In this paper, the derivation of the protection ratio for the digital microwave system with diversity is newly suggested for a basic guidance of initial planning for frequency coordination, and computational results are presented for an actual radio frequency band. The net filter discrimination has been also examined to see the effect of the adjacent channel protection ratio caused by adjacent channel interference. In addition, the protection ratios for the space or frequency diversity system are analyzed in terms of diversity improvement factors to find out an equivalent allowable noise-to-interference ratio (N/I) from degraded fade margin. According to results for 6.2 GHz system, with the space diversity of 25 m distance between antennas or the frequency diversity of ${\Delta}f/f=0.05$, under 64-QAM and 60 km at BER $10^{-6}$, the protection ratio can be greatly reduced in comparison to the non-diversity system. So, assuming that only the same protection ratio as the non-diversity system is kept, it is shown that the system with diversity may get more interference level of N/I allowing from 9.0 to - 5.9 dB or from 6.0 to - 4.3 dB for the space or frequency diversity. In consequence, it is concluded that the diversity system is more robust or tolerable for interferences or fades, which may play an important role in overcoming N/I to some extent.

  • 사용자가 시간과 장소에 구애 받지 않고 컴퓨터를 자연스럽고 효율성 있게 사용할 수 있는 환경을 의미하는 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅은 네트워크와 센서(Sensor), smart devices, 무선 통신과 smart middleware(UPnP(Universal Plug and Play), Jini, HAVi(Home Audio Video Interoperability) IEEE 1394, PLC (Power Line Communication) 등) 등을 기반으로 Smart Space를 만들 수 있다. 그러나 여러 종류의 가전제품들이 늘어나고 수많은 사용자들의 요구를 충족시키기엔 smart middleware의 단일 제어로는 처리가 불가능하여 본 논문에서는 이기종간의 미들웨어간의 상호작용을 위해 개발된 OSGi(Open Service Gateway Initiative) Spec. 3에서 제공하는 서비스 플랫폼(Service Platform)을 기반으로 사용자/디바이스 관리 및 분산 시스템 등의 취약점들을 보완하여 Smart Space상에서 효율적인 서비스 번들을 관리하기 위해 MASBM(Multi-Agent Service Bundle Manager)을 제안하였다.

Progress Report : Quantifying and Classifying Peculiarity of Cluster Galaxies

  • In the LCDM paradigm, hierarchical merging is thought to play a key role in the formation and evolution of massive galaxies. Theoretical and observational studies suggest that massive galaxies started forming at high redshifts and were assembled via numerous mergers. Galaxy clusters are the sites where the most massive galaxies are found and the most dramatic merger histories are embedded. The previous work of Sheen et al. (2012) identified via visual inspection many massive galaxies with merger features in clusters, which surprised the community. In this study we aim to quantify peculiarity of galaxies to pin down the merger frequency in cluster environments more objectively. We have performed optical deep imaging of 4 Abell clusters by using IMACS f/2 on a Magellan Badde 6.5-m telescope. For the galaxies in our data, we applied GALFIT algorithm, which fits analytic models to galaxy data, and we analyzed their residuals. We present the preliminary results of our sample galaxies.

  • The development of computer graphics techniques came after development of various entertainment industry such as movies, game and so on, and techniques that make diverse objects in virtual space and control the action of objects are growing rapidly. Especially objects(characters) play an important role in encouraging virtual space at computer animation field. If lots of objects are animated in virtual space, undesired matters of fixed topography or collision between objects etc occur. In order to solve this problem, we need control techniques in detail. This paper presents and implements collision evasion with submarine topography in a virtual aquarium and control technique about collision evasion with other objects.

Abnormal Winter Melting of the Arctic Sea Ice Cap Observed by the Spaceborne Passive Microwave Sensors

  • The spatial size and variation of Arctic sea ice play an important role in Earth's climate system. These are affected by conditions in the polar atmosphere and Arctic sea temperatures. The Arctic sea ice concentration is calculated from brightness temperature data derived from the Defense Meteorological Satellite program (DMSP) F13 Special Sensor Microwave/Imagers (SSMI) and the DMSP F17 Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) sensors. Many previous studies point to significant reductions in sea ice and their causes. We investigated the variability of Arctic sea ice using the daily sea ice concentration data from passive microwave observations to identify the sea ice melting regions near the Arctic polar ice cap. We discovered the abnormal melting of the Arctic sea ice near the North Pole during the summer and the winter. This phenomenon is hard to explain only surface air temperature or solar heating as suggested by recent studies. We propose a hypothesis explaining this phenomenon. The heat from the deep sea in Arctic Ocean ridges and/or the hydrothermal vents might be contributing to the melting of Arctic sea ice. This hypothesis could be verified by the observation of warm water column structure below the melting or thinning arctic sea ice through the project such as Coriolis dataset for reanalysis (CORA).

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the outdoor living space of apartment housing complexes in Daejeon area and to find out the degree of satisfaction, the frequency of use, the preference of facilities and the degree of importance. This study insists that the recognition about the residents' changing demands and interests be considered more important than the aesthetic design. Moreover, it can be proposed as the basic resource which can be used for the social demands. Therefore, various perspectives about the outdoor living space of apartment housing complexes can play an vital role in improving the design process and developing better residential environment.

Chronic Subdural Hematoma in the Aged, Trauma or Degeneration?

  • Chronic subdural hematomas (CSHs) are generally regarded to be a traumatic lesion. It was regarded as a stroke in 17th century, an inflammatory disease in 19th century. From 20th century, it became a traumatic lesion. CSH frequently occur after a trauma, however, it cannot occur when there is no enough subdural space even after a severe head injury. CSH may occur without trauma, when there is sufficient subdural space. The author tried to investigate trends in the causation of CSH. By a review of literature, the author suggested a different view on the causation of CSH. CSH usually originated from either a subdural hygroma or an acute subdural hematoma. Development of CSH starts from the separation of the dural border cell (DBC) layer, which induces proliferation of DBCs with production of neomembrane. Capillaries will follow along the neomembrane. Hemorrhage would occur into the subdural fluid either by tearing of bridge veins or repeated microhemorrhage from the neomembrane. That is the mechanism of hematoma enlargement. Trauma or bleeding tendency may precipitate development of CSH, however, it cannot lead CSH, if there is no sufficient subdural space. The key determinant for development of CSH is a sufficient subdural space, in other words, brain atrophy. The most common and universal cause of brain atrophy is the aging. Modifying Virchow's description, CSH is sometimes traumatic, but most often caused by degeneration of the brain. Now, it is reasonable that degeneration of brain might play pivotal role in development of CSH in the aged persons.

  • Purpose: Religious facilities often intend to contribute to surrounding neighborhood and local community. While motivated by religious aims, churches can play a role in social welfare for elders in local community. It is obvious that the role will be different from official social welfare services from government and this study aims to examine the possibility of churches in the role of elderly social welfare in terms of space and program. Methods: Researchers interviewed management of four existing welfare programs by churces in order to understand operation of social welfare program for elders by churches. The second step was case study of four churches in Suwon City area. The potential for social welfare space use for elders was examined. Results: Researchers found the role of churches in providing welfare relevant programs and services but its function is not well established yet. Financial support is needed and another support is need from welfare experts. Implications: While churches has not well established the role in elderly welfare in local communities, churches can further develop welfare services utilizing space, manpower, and activity programs.
