To treat nitrate and non-biodegradable organics effectively in sewage, industrial wastewater and livestock wastewater, the activated sludge process integrated by a membrane separation and a porous electrode- electrolysis was proposed and its efficiency was investigated. The proposed system was consisted of 3 processes; activated sludge, membrane filtration and electrolysis. In the study, the membrane filtration played a role in reducing the load of the electrolysis to operate the proposed process stably. The electrolysis consisted of a porous electrode to increase the efficiency due to the extension of the specific surface area. Additionally, redox reaction in the electrolysis was induced by decomposing influent water as current was applied. As a result, hydrogen free radicals and oxygen radicals as intermediates were produced and they acted as oxidants to play a role in decomposing non-degradable organics. It was environmentally-friendly process because intermediates produced by porous electrode were used to treat waste matters without supplying external reagent. Experimental data showed that the proposed process was more excellent than activated sludge process. SS removal efficiencies of the proposed process, membrane filtration and activated sludge process were about 100%, about 100% and about 90%, respectively. COD removal efficiencies of the proposed system, membrane filtration and activated sludge process were about 92%, about 84% and about 78%, respectively. T-N removal efficiencies of the proposed system, membrane filtration and activated sludge process were about 88%, about 67%, and about 58%, respectively. The SS data showed that SS was efficiently removed in the single of the membrane filtration. The COD/T-N data showed that COD/T-N of membrane hybrid process was treated by removing a little soluble organics and SS, and that COD/T-N of electrolysis hybrid process was treated by oxidize organics with high removal rate.
In the ozone evolution using $PbO_2$, which was electrodeposited on Ti plate at various conditions in electrolyte, the effects of lead dioxide structure on the current efficiency and surface structure changes of lead dioxide were investigated. Also the effects of oxygen transfer reaction on the ozone evolution were investigated by means of a $PbO_2$ electrodeposited on the platinum rotating disk electrode. In order to develope an electrode for ozone evolution, durability of lead dioxide and optimum current density were investigated. At the electrodeposited lead dioxide with the larger grain size and higher crystallinity, the efficiency for ozone evolution was higher. Optimum current density to electrodeposite lead dioxide with large grain size and high crystalinity was $50mA/cm^2$. Lead dioxide deposited in the presence of glycerin showed the best advantage of ozone evolution. Also lead dioxide electrodeposited at less than $10mA/cm^2$ or at more than $100mA/cm^2$ has poor performance of ozone evolution and poor adhesive strength to substrate. In the beginning of ozone evolution, surface structure of lead dioxide was changed and this change resulted in good effects on ozone evolution. Lead dioxide doped with other elements was favorable not to ozone evolution but to oxygen evolution, so it is speculated that ozone evolution has not intermediate stage of oxygen evolution and occurs competitively with oxygen evolution. When ozone was evolved at $0.7{\sim}0.8A/cm^2$, the current efficiency was highest.

We fabricated flexible thermoradiotherapy probes to alternated combination with Interstitial hyperthermia and Brachyradiotherapy thermoradiotherapy probe was coated by gold plate on polyethylene brachytherapy probe. When Agar phantom was heated 15 minute with 30 W radiofrequency power, temperature increased as 5oC for polyethylene probe and 20oC for gold coated polyethylene probe. We observed that the 1 cm square array would heat a volume with a 1.25 cm radius circular field cross section to therapeutic temperatures (90% relative SAR using Tm) and the 2 cm square array with a 1.75 cm radius rectangular field with central inhomogeneity. With 2 cm long electrode implants, we observed that the 1 cm square array would heat a 3 cm long sagittal section to therapeutic temperature (90% relative SAR using Tm). The histopathological changes associated with RF heating of normal canine brains have been correlated with thermal distributions. RF needle electrode heating was applied for 50 min to generate tissue temperatures of 43${\circ}$C. We obtained a quarter of the heated tissue material immediately after heating and sacrificed at intervals from 7${\sim}$30 days. The acute stage was demonstrated by liquefactive necrosis, pyknosis of neuronal element in the gray matter. Mild gliosis occurring around the necrosis was demonstrated in the last sacrificed (days30)canine brain.
Luminance properties of external electrode fluorescent lamps and optical components in backlight unit (BLU) and optical transmission rates of optical sheets, are investigated for LCD-TV of 32" in diagonal with WXGA level resolution (1366$\times$768). The luminance is measured in 12-lamps and 18-lamps of BLU. The luminance uniformity preserves about 85 % in the 12-lamps backlight, while the luminance of optical components and the efficiency of backlight in the 12-lamps are lower than those in the 18-lamps backlight. When the lamp luminance in BLU having 12-lamps and 18-lamps is normalized as 100 %, the relative luminance of a diffusion plate, a diffusion sheet, a prism sheet (BEF), a polarization sheet (DBEF), has a constant value without dependence on a lamp luminance. The relative luminance of optical components in 12-lamps BLU is lower than that in 18-lamps backlight. The light transmission rate, the relative luminance of liquid crystal display panel with the luminance 100 % of backlight, is 7.14 % in the use of DBEF and BEF, 6.12 % in the use of only DBEF, and 3.21 % in the use of only BEF. Those Data obtained in this experiment for the lamps and optical components, are the design parameters for the LCD backlight.

Water splitting reaction using photocatalysts is of great interest in the utilization of solar energy [1]. In the present work, visible light-responsive $TiO_2$ thin films (Vis-$TiO_2$) were prepared by a radio frequency magnetron sputtering (RF-MS) deposition method and applied for the separate evolution of $H_2$ and $O_2$ from water as well as the photofuel cell. Special attentions will be focused on the effect of HF treatment of Vis-$TiO_2$ thin films on their photocatalytic activities. Vis-$TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by an RF-MS method using a calcined $TiO_2$ plate and Ar as the sputtering gas. The Vis-$TiO_2$ thin films were then deposited on the Ti foil substrate with the substrate temperature at 873 K (Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti). Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti thin films were immersed in a 0.045 vol% HF solution at room temperature. The effect of HF treatments on the activity of Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti thin films for the photocatalytic water splitting reaction have been investigated. Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti thin films treated with HF solution (HF-Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti) exhibited remarkable enhancement in the photocatalytic activity for $H_2$ evolution from a methanol aqueous solution as well as in the photoelectrochemical performance under visible light irradiation as compared with the untreated Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti thin films. Moreover, Pt-loaded HF-Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti thin films act as efficient and stable photocatalysts for the separate evolution of $H_2$ and $O_2$ from water under visible light irradiation in the presence of chemical bias. Thus, HF treatment was found to be an effective way to improve the photocatalytic activity of Vis-$TiO_2$/Ti thin films. Furthermore, unique separate type photofuel cell was fabricated using a Vis-$TiO_2$ thin film as an electrode, which can generate electrical power under solar light irradiation by using various kinds of biomass derivatives as fuel. It was found that the introduction of an iodine ($I^-/{I_3}^-$) redox solution at the cathode side enables the development of a highly efficient photofuel cell which can utilize a cost-efficient carbon electrode as an alternative to the Pt cathode.

The response characteristics of the PZT transducers during glass capillary breakage were studied at the epicenter of the glass plate. The PZT transducers had been made by using EC-65 PZT ceramics(supplied by Edo co.) with a constant area and a various thickness. The theoretical displacement and velocity at the epicenter of glass plate with an air boundary condition were calculated by assuming the point load of 1N force strength and a rise time of 280 ns with a ramped functional dependence, and the 1st pulses of the PZT transducer may be considered as the vertical velocity incident on the electrode of the PZT ceramic. The responses of the PZT transducer may be depended on the thickness mode of the PZT ceramic below 0.33 in the ratio of the thickness to the diameter of PZT ceramic, but the reponse of the PZT transducer may be depended on the other modes of PZT transducer in the addition of the thickness mode of the PZT ceramic above 0.33. The full time of half maximum at the 1st pulse was nearly 280 ns without a variation of applied breakage load and the resonant frequency of the PZT transducer, and then may be considered as the rise time of a AE source. The maximum amplitude of the 1st pulse depended on the incident vertical velocity and capacitance of the PZT transducer. Therefore, the full time of half maximum and maximum amplitude of the 1st pulse may be considered as the rise time and strength of acoustic emission source respectively.

In a test duct with closed configuration, particle removal performance of an edge-plate type electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was evaluated at a high flow rate in $CO_2$ rich environments by changing gap distances between collection plates, concentrations of $CO_2$, particle sizes, types of electrodes, and types of power supplies. At the same experimental conditions, collection efficiency of particles with the mean particle size, 300 nm, decreased as the gap distance and $CO_2$ concentration increased because of low electrostatic force and low discharged current. In addition, as the particle size increased, the efficiency increased because of high charging rate of the large particles. With the electrode type which has higher surface area of a discharging plate and with the power supply which applied 25 kHz-pulsed DC voltages, the removal efficiency was high even in rich $CO_2$ condition due to high electrostatic force at the same power consumption.

Gargle solution has typically been used for the prevention of oral infectious disease such as dental caries and periodontitis. However, the use of most gargle solutions is controversial in application for children because some gargle solutions have harmful side effects. Electrolyzed water is generated by passed an electric current and has antimicrobial activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the efficacy of electrolyzed water in various conditions for eliminating cariogenic bacteria. Electrolyzed water was generated by a platinum electrode in the presence of sodium chloride at various concentrations. Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus were cultivated into a brain heart infusion broth. After harvesting planktonic bacteria, the pellets were treated with the electrolyzed water and commercial gargle solutions and plated on a mitis-salivarius agar plate. Also, the anti-biofilm activity of the electrolyzed water and commercial gargle solutions was investigated after biofilm formation of S. mutans and S. sobrinus. The bacteria in the biofilm were plated onto a mitis-salivarius agar plate. The plates were incubated, and the colony forming unit was measured. The electrolyzed water containing sodium chloride showed significant antibacterial activity against S. mutans and S. sobrinus as well as some gargle solutions. Furthermore, the electrolyzed water had more disruptive effect on the biofilm of S. mutans and S. sobrinus and killed more bacteria in the biofilm than commercial gargle solutions. The results demonstrate that electrolyzed water may be a useful gargle solution for prevention of dental caries.

This paper gives the experimental results for the effective precipitation of particulated matter(PM) below 1[${\mu}m$] of diameter using the electrostatic precipitator, which is designed by ourselves. In order to improve the precipitation efficiency, the vertical and parallel magnetic field to the electric field is applied simultaneously by arranging ferrite magnets. When the parallel magnetic field is applied, the precipitation efficiency does not improve in comparison with non-magnets. However, when the vertical magnetic field is applied, it is improved about 5[%] more than the case of non-magnetized ferrite plate used. In addition, when the magnets are installed at the center of ground plate electrodes, the precipitation efficiency is ranged from 17 to 32[%] under the applied voltage of 5[kV]. It is similar to the case of the magnet arrangement at the front part of ground electrode. Also, the precipitation efficiency is more improved by arranging magnets as the inside part and zigzag on the electrodes. Especially, large particles of 0.7 and 1[${\mu}m$] is more easily captured by electrostatic precipitator. Consequently, it is convinced that the vertical magnetic field is more desirable than parallel magnetic field on the electric field for the effective treatment of particulated matter.

To cope with automobile exhaust gas regulations, ISG (Idling Stop & Go) and charging control systems are applied to HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) for the purpose of improving fuel economy. These systems require quick charge/discharge performance at high current. To satisfy this characteristic, improvement of the positive electrode plate is studied to improve the charge/discharge process and performance of AGM(Absorbent Glass Mat) lead-acid batteries applied to ISG automotive systems. The bonding between grid and A.M (Active Material) can be improved by applying the Sand-Blasting method to provide roughness to the surface of the positive grid. When the Sand-Blasting method is applied with conditions of ball speed 1,000 rpm and conveyor speed 5 M/min, ideal bonding is achieved between grid and A.M. The positive plate of each condition is applied to the AGM LAB (Absorbent Glass Mat Lead Acid Battery); then, the performance and ISG life characteristics are tested by the vehicle battery test method. In CCA, which evaluates the starting performance at -18 ℃ and 30 ℃ with high current, the advanced AGM LAB improves about 25 %. At 0 ℃ CA (Charge Acceptance), the initial charging current of the advanced AGM LAB increases about 25 %. Improving the bonding between the grid and A.M. by roughening the grid surface improves the flow of current and lowers the resistance, which is considered to have a significant effect on the high current charging/discharging area. In a Standard of Battery Association of Japan (SBA) S0101 test, after 300 A discharge, the voltage of the advanced AGM LAB with the Sand-Blasting method grid was 0.059 V higher than that of untreated grid. As the cycle progresses, the gap widens to 0.13 V at the point of 10,800 cycles. As the bonding between grid and A.M. increases through the Sand Blasting method, the slope of the discharge voltage declines gradually as the cycle progresses, showing excellent battery life characteristics. It is believed that system will exhibit excellent characteristics in the vehicle environment of the ISG system, in which charge/discharge occurs over a short time.
