In accordance with the growing trend of decommissioning nuclear facilities, research on the cutting process is actively proceeding worldwide. In general, a thermal cutting process, such as plasma cutting is applied to decommissioning a nuclear reactor pressure vessel (RPV). Plasma cutting has the advantage of removing the radioactive materials and being able to cut thick materials. However, when operating under water, the molten metal remains in the cut plane and re-solidifies. Hence, cutting is not entirely accomplished. For these environmental reasons, it is difficult to cut thick metal. The contact arc metal cutting (CAMC) process can be used to cut thick metal under water. CAMC is a process that cuts metal using a plate-shaped electrode based on a high-current arc plasma heat source. During the cutting process, high-pressure water is sprayed from the electrode to remove the molten metal, known as rinsing. As the CAMC is conducted without using a shielding gas, such as Argon, the electrode is consumed during the process. In this study, CAMC is introduced as a method for dismantling nuclear vessels and the relationship between the metal removal and electrode consumption is investigated according to the cutting conditions.
This study investigates the reinforcing effects of the Multi-bar Spring nails with respect to the conventional Soil-nails in artificial slopes. Based on wide experience related to design and construction, soil nails have been widely applied to reinforce slope in the world. Multi-bar spring nails are one of the improved soil nailing methods. These method maximizes bending, shearing, pull-out resistance for those multi-nails, not unit nail, that are inserted in the borehole using special spacer at regular intervals. In addition, because cutting plane is confined effect resulting from a pressured plate at the end of the nails with compression spring equipment, slope stability is secured using MS-nailing method. Analyzing bending, pull-out, shearing condition of MS-nail, it was examined throughly elastic region, load transfer capacity, reinforcing effect on cutting plate of MS-nails. In addition, Pilot and laboratory tests, numerical analysis were carried out to verify the superiority of MS-nailing method. In case, MS nailing method is applied to reinforce artificial slope, it was analyzed that bending, pull-out, shearing resistance was increased more than existing nailing method was applied. In this study, it was shown that surface failure was more or less prevented using MS-nailing method, confining effect on cutting plane using spring stuck to flexible equipment.

A novel rapid prototyping (RP) process, an automated transfer type variable lamination manufacturing process (Automated VLM-ST) has been developed. In Automated VLM-ST, a vacuum chuck and linear moving system transfer the plate type material with two pilot holes to the rotation stage. A four-axis synchronized hotwire cutter cuts the material twice to generate Automated Unit Shape Layer (AUSL) with the desired width, side slopes, length, and two reference shapes in accordance with CAD data. Each AUSL is stacked on the stacking plate with two pilot pins using the pilot holes in AUSL and the pilot pins. Subsequently, adhesive is supplied to the top surface of the stacked AUSL by a bonding roller and pressure is simultaneously applied to the bottom surface of the stacked AUSL. Finally, three-dimensional shapes are rapidly fabricated. This paper describes the procedure for generating the cutting path data (AUSL data) f3r automated VLM-ST. The method for the generation of the Automated Unit Shape Layer (AUSL) in Automated VLM-ST was practically applied and fabricated for a various shapes.
The near surface mounted (NSM) FRP strengthening method has been conventionally applied for strengthening the deteriorated concrete structures. The NSM strengthening method, however, has been issued with the problem of limitation of the cutting depth which is usually considered as concrete cover depth. This may be related with degradation of bonding performance in long-term service state. To improve the debonding problem, in this study, the Stirrup partial-cutting NSM (SCNSM) strengthening method using CFRP plate was newly developed. SCNSM strengthening method can be effectively applied to the deteriorated concrete structure without any troubles of insufficient cutting depth. To experimentally verify the structural behavior, the flexural test of the concrete beam by using the SCNSM strengthening method was conducted with the test variable as the strengthening length (32%, 48%, 70%, 80%, 96% of span length). In the result of the test, the NSM and SCNSM strengthened specimen showed similar structural behavior with load-deflection, mode of failure. Additionally, there was no apparent structural degradation by the stirrup partial-cutting. Consequently, it was evaluated that the SCNSM strengthening method can be useful for seriously damaged concrete structures that is hard to apply the conventional NSM strengthening method for increasing the structural capacity.
Evaluation of fracture toughness of welded structures has a significant influence on the structural design. However the residual stresses is redistributed while the welded structures is cut for preparing specimens. This study investigated an effect of the welding residual stress redistribution on the impact absorption energy of Charpy specimen. SA516Gr70 steel plate by at the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and gas tungsten arc welding(GTAW) was cutting. Specimens for Charpy impact testing were taken from the welded plate. Two material removal mechanisms (wire cutting and water jet) were used to make the specimens. Welding residual stress and redistribution residual stress were measured using the XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) method. The amount of redistribution of residual stress depends on the different material removal mechanism. Redistribution of residual stress of reduced the impact absorption energy by 15%.

The problem of generating torch paths for 2D laser cutting of a stock plate nested with a set of free-formed parts is investigated. The objective is to minimize the total length of the torch path starting from a blown depot, then visiting all the given Parts, and retuning back to the depot. A torch Path consists of the depot and Piercing Points each of which is to be specified for cutting a part. The torch path optimization problem is shown to be formulated as an extended version of the standard travelling salesman problem To solve the problem, a hybrid genetic algorithm is proposed. In order to improve the speed of evolution convergence, the algorithm employs a genetic algorithm for global search and a combination of an optimization technique and a genetic algorithm for local optimization. Traditional genetic operators developed for continuous optimization problems are used to effectively deal with the continuous nature of piercing point positions. Computational results are provided to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

The simulation of Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) machining facilitates the selection of optimal cutting parameter for high machining efficiency and better surface quality. In this study, This paper proposes a dual-dexel model to represent the fiber laminate with computational geometry method to calculate the fiber length removed per revolution and fiber cutting angles. A flat end milling simulation software is developed in C# to simulate and display the CFRP milling process. During simulation, fiber lengths, fiber cutting angle and engaged cutting angle can be displayed in real-time. A CFRP plate with different angles in different layer is used to compare the simulation results.

A novel process is newly developed for building RP(Rapid Prototyping) parts using a sheet lamination technique. The build process of existing sheet lamination type RP machines consists of the following steps : feeding, lamination and cutting. In this process, the laminated part of an object is often scratched by a cutter or damaged by a laser beam due to the cutting operation preceded by lamination, In addition, decubing of the unused portion from the laminated block is difficult. In the new process, cutting operation is performed before lamination. The cutting operation takes place while a paper sheet is firmly attached on the plate using electrostatic force. Then liquid glue is applied to the calculated region of the given contour for lamination. The process aims to manufacture a $2k RP machine, what we call the Freeform Mater I, that can use A4 or latter-size used papers. A prototype machine that demonstrates the design concept is built and further research issues are discussed.

This study aims to develop a PZT-driven depth adjustment device with a flexure hinge and to investigate its static/dynamic characteristics. This device will be applied to rapidly and accurately trace a flat surface with slight waviness of up to several hundreds of micrometers in magnitude. One typical example is to cut a film coated on a steel plate. A depth control system composed of PMAC, PZT/PZT amplifier, flexure hinge/knife, and laser displacement sensor is implemented on a desktop three-axis machine and an actual cutting test is conducted on a steel workpiece with a sinusoidal-wavy surface. It is verified that the dynamic characteristics of the device limit the maximum cutting speed and depth precision.
The stencil is a thin stainless sheet in which a pattern is formed, which is placed on a surface of plate to reproduce the pattern of electric circuit. Conventionally the stencil has been produced by etching process. This process has many anti-environmental factors. In this study, Nd : YAG laser cutting process has been applied for stencil manufacturing. The study is focused on estimating kerf width of laser cut stencil by E.B.P.(Error Back-Propagation). This algorithm is good for estimating target value from input value. In this paper, target value was kerf width, and input values were frequency, pulse width, cutting speed and laser power. E.B.P. after teaming input and target could estimate kerf width from some variables precisely.
