In this paper, three types of optical receivers are designed using a $0.35-{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology for plastic optical fiber (POF) applications. Basic common-source transimpedance amplifier (CS-TIA), common-gate TIA (CG-TIA), and regulated-cascode TIA (RGC-TIA) are optimally designed, and their transimpedance gain (TZ gain), 3-dB bandwidth, and noise characteristics are compared and analyzed. As a result of simulations, the RGC-TIA indicates better TZ gain and 3-dB bandwidth than other topologies, and CS-TIA has the best noise performance. Each optical receiver occupies area of $0.35mm^2$.
The photocatalytic degradation of TCE using solar energy in POFR was studied. The use of solar energy was investigated in plastic optica fiber photocatalytic reactor (POFR). In POFR, the main parameters of photocatalytic degradation of TCE were lihgt intensity, thickness of $TiO_2$-coated film on plastic fiber core, the same of total $TiO_2$-coated surface area with changed length. We studied the apparent photonic efficiency and photocatalytic degradation rate of TCE in POFR. The apparent photonic efficiency of various light intensities was decreased by an incresed intensities. The photocatalytic activities of $TiO_2$-coated optical fiber reactor system depended on the coating thickness, and total clad-stripped surface area of POF. Photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene ($C_2HCl_3$, TCE) in the gas-phase was elucidated by using $TiO_2$-coated plastic optical fiber reactor. In TCE degradation, in-situ FTIR measurement resulted in mineralization into $CO_2$.

Novel concept of sensor mat and its signal processing method is proposed for patient monitoring in medical application. Proposed sensor mat structure has sensing inner layer which has cross-linked arrangement using plastic optical fiber(POF). Large core diameter of plastic optical fiber behaved as band pass filter by averaging the noise component caused by unwanted environmental factors. Signal processor followed by sensor output added noise immune performance by filtering out unwanted component. Fail-proof patient breath monitoring scheme was realized by using intelligent decision algorithm. Unlike the conventional approach by using mechanical sensor, which have high sensitivity both to signal and to environmental noise, our approach provided reliable breath motion detection.

In this study, the characteristics of optical fibers for the application in photocatalytic system was investigated using the intentionally designed accessories for spectrometer and radiometer to resolve the problems associated with the conventional system such as cost and structural restrictions from artificial lamp usage, to broaden the application fields into underground, and to utilize solar light in the future. To do this two kinds of optical fibers, plastic optical fiber (POF) and quartz optical fiber (QOF) were compared in terms of characteristics related with light transmittance and absorption and reactivity in TCE degradation.

POF(Polymer optical fiber) offers advantages of lighter, inexpensive, and easier to use over GOF(glass optical fiber). Its higher transmission loss and low bandwidth, however, make it suitable only for short distance networking such as LAN. The polymer materials and its synthesis technology of low transmission loss and the broader application for flexible POF are the two of many critical areas to be investigated more. In the current study, low-noise POF modules are developed and optimized with a low noise amplifier and low cost LED of 650 nm. In order to demonstrate the dynamic characteristics of the POF module for optical communication and sensing, we have built an image transfer module, optical transmission speed measurement module, optical transceiver for RS-232, and sound-transfer module, and the signal characteristics of them are evaluated. It is found that the module can be readily used for a quick and simple measurement of optical transfer speed. With help of analog amplifier, LED, and PD, sound and image transfers through a maximum 60 m optical waveguide have been confirmed. Real-time data transfer was also demonstrated in PID control, which is thought to be valuable to industrial plant design and control.
In this study plastic optical fibers(POFs) were considered as light-transmitting media and substrates for the potential use in photocatalytic environmental purification system. After the characteristics of POFs in terms of light transmittance and absorption were determined at the beginning, the detailed investigation was further performed through the photocatalytic degradation of trichloroethylene(TCE), iso-propanol and etc. with TiO$_2$-coated optical fiber reactor systems(POFR). It is concluded that the use of POfs is preferred to quartz optical fibers(QOFs) since the advantages such as ease of handling, lower cost, relatively reasonable light attenuation at the wavelength of near 400nm can be obtained. Various geometrical reactor shapes have been constructed and applied for the last one and half years. For the use of POF in water phase treatment, however, more detailed scientific and engineering aspects should be envisaged. This case requires a suitable mixture to obtain more stable and innocuous immobilization of photocatalyst on POF.

This paper describes 250-Mb/s fiber optic transmitter and receiver ICs for plastic optical fiber applications using a$ 0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. Simple signal and light detection schemes are introduced for power reduction in sleep mode. The transmitter converts non-return-to-zero digital data into 650-nm visible-red light signal and the receiver recovers the digital data from the incident light signal through up to 50-m plastic optical fiber. The transmitter and receiver ICs occupy only 0.62 $mm^2$ of area including electrostatic discharge protection diodes and bonding pads. The transmitter IC consumes 23 mA with 20 mA of LED driving currents, and the receiver IC consumes 16 mA with 4 mA of output driving currents at 250 Mb/s of data rate from a 3.3-V supply in active mode. In sleep mode, the transmitter and receiver ICs consume only 25 ${\mu}A$ and 40 ${\mu}A$, respectively.
