Lightweight metallic truss structures with open, periodic cell are currently being investigated because of their multi-functionality such as thermal management and load bearing. The Kagome truss PCM has been proved that it has higher resistance to plastic buckling, more plastic deformation energy and lower anisotropy than other truss PCMs. The subject of this paper is an examination of the failure mechanism of Wire woven Bulk Kagome(WBK). To address this issue, the out-of-plane compressive responses of the WBK has been measured and compared with theoretical and finite element (FE) predictions. For the experiment, 2 multi-layered WBK are fabricated and 3 specimens are prepared. For the theoretical analysis, the brazed joints of each wire in WBK are modeled as the pin-joint. Then, the peak stress of compressive behavior and elastic modulus are calculated based on the equilibrium equation and energy method. The mechanical structure with five by five cells on the plane are constructed is modeled using the commercial code, PATRAN 2005. and the analysis is achieved by the commercial FE code ABAQUS version 6.5 under the incremental theory of plasticity.

The perfect and accurate methods to control the wear are not made clear so far. For this phenomenon only mating surface has been studied. In order to control the wear the essence of it has to be made clear. It is reported that adhesive wear might occure as a result of plastic deformation, the fracture and removal or transfer asperities on close contacting surfaces. On this view point the plastic flow was attempted to compare with fluid or electromagnetic flow. The partial differential equations of equilibrium for the plane strain deformation will make use of the method of characteristics. The characteristic curves or characteristics of the hyperbolic equation coincide with the slip lines by R. Hill's papers. By Hencky's stress equation, it is evident that if P and .phi. are prescribed for a boundary condition then it may be possible to proceed along constant .alpha. and .betha. lines to determine the value of the hydrostatic pressure everywhere in the slip line field net work. A wedge formation mechanism has been considered for an explanation of this matters. The analysis shows that there is a critical value, which depends on the hardness ratio and the shear stress on the interface, for the top angle of asperity is less than this critical value, the asperity can yield plastically despite of being harder than the mating surface.
An combined implicit/explicit scheme for the analysis of sheet forming problems has been proposed in this work. In finite element simulation of sheet metal forming processes, the robustness and stability of computation are important requirements since the computation time and convergency become major points of consideration besides the solution accuracy due to the complexity of geometry and boundary conditions. The implicit scheme dmploys a more reliable and rigorous scheme in considering the equilibrium at each step of deformation, while in the explict scheme the problem of convergency is elimented at thecost of solution accuracy. The explicit approach and the implicit approach have merits and demerits, respectively. In order to combine the merits of these two methods a step-wise combined implici/explicit scheme has been developed. In the present work, the rigid-plastic finite element method using bending energy augmented membraneelements(BEAM)(1) is employed for computation. Computations are carried out for some typical sheet forming examples by implicit, combined implicit/explicit schemes including deep drawing of an oil pan, front fender and fuel tank. From the comparison between the methods the advantages and disadvantages of the methods are discussed.
A new meshfree method for the analysis of elasto-plastic deformations is presented. The method is based on the proposed first-order least-squares formulation, to which the moving least-squares approximation is applied. The least-squares formulation for the classical elasto-plasticity and its extension to an incrementally objective formulation for finite deformations are proposed. In the formulation, the equilibrium equation and flow rule are enforced in least-squares sense, while the hardening law and loading/unloading condition are enforced exactly at each integration point. The closest point projection method for the integration of rate-form constitutive equation is inherently involved in the formulation, and thus the radial-return mapping algorithm is not performed explicitly. Also the penalty schemes for the enforcement of the boundary and frictional contact conditions are devised. The main benefit of the proposed method is that any structure of cells is not used during the whole process of analysis. Through some numerical examples of metal forming processes, the validity and effectiveness of the method are presented.
Flexural capacity prediction is a challenging problem for externally prestressed concrete beams (EPCBs) due to the unbonded phenomenon between the concrete beam and external tendons. Many prediction equations have been provided in previous research but typically ignored the differences in deformation mode between internal and external unbonded tendons. The availability of these equations for EPCBs is controversial due to the inconsistent deformation modes and ignored second-order effects. In this study, the deformation characteristics and collapse mechanism of EPCB are carefully considered, and the ultimate deflected shape curves are derived based on the simplified curvature distribution. With the compatible relation between external tendons and the concrete beam, the equations of tendon elongation and eccentricity loss at ultimate states are derived, and the geometric interpretation is clearly presented. Combined with the sectional equilibrium equations, a rational and simplified flexural capacity prediction method for EPCBs is proposed. The key parameter, plastic hinge length, is emphatically discussed and determined by the sensitivity analysis of 324 FE analysis results. With 94 collected laboratory-tested results, the effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed, and comparisons with the previous formulas are made. The results show the better prediction accuracy of the proposed method for both stress increments and flexural capacity of EPCBs and the main reasons are discussed.
The problem analyzed here is a sheet metal forming process which requires a drawbead. The drawbead provides the sheet metal enough tension to be deformed plastically along the punch face and consequently, ensures a proper shape of final products by fixing the sheet to the die. Therefore, the optimum design of drawbead is indispensable in obtaining the desired formability. A static-explicit finite element analysis is carried out to provide a perspective tool for designing the drawbead. The finite element formulation is constructed from static equilibrium equation and takes into account the boundary condition that involves a proper contact condition. The deformation behavior of sheet material is formulated by the elastic-plastic constitutive equation. The finite element formulation has been solved based on an existing method that is called the static-explicit method. The main features of the static-explicit method are first that there is no convergence problem. Second, the problem of contact and friction is easily solved by application of very small time interval. During the analysis of drawbead processes, the strain distribution and the drawing force on drawbead can be analyzed. And the effects of bead shape and number of beads on sheet forming processes were investigated. The results of the static explicit analysis of drawbead processes show no convergence problem and comparatively accurate results even though severe high geometric and contact-friction nonlinearity. Moreover, the computational results of a static-explicit finite element analysis can supply very valuable information for designing the drawbead process in which the defects of final sheet product can be removed.
A direct discrete formulation suitable for the nonlinear analysis of masonry structures is presented. The numerical approach requires a pair of dual meshes, one for describing displacement fields, one for imposing equilibrium. Forces and displacements are directly used (instead of having to resort to a model derived from a set of differential equations). Associated and nonassociated flow laws are dealt with within a complementarity framework. The main features of the method and of the relevant computer code are discussed. Numerical examples are presented, showing that the numerical approach is able to describe plastic strains, damage effects and crack patterns in masonry structures.
In this paper a spline function solution for the ultimate strength of steel members and member structures is derived based on total Lagrangian formulation. The displacements of members along longitudinal and transverse directions are interpolated by one-order B spline functions and three-order hybrid spline functions respectively. Equilibrium equations are established according to the principle of virtual work. All initial imperfections of members and effects of loading, unloading and reloading of material are taken into account. The influence of the instability of members on structural behavior can be included in analyses. Numerical examples show that the method of this paper can satisfactorily analyze the elasto-plastic large deflection problems of planar steel member and member structures.
An efficient approach to limit analysis is presented whereby a continuous perfectly plastic structure is replaced by a discrete mathematical model. It is formulated as a mathematical programming problem using the static theorem of plasticity. The discretization is accomplished by writing the governing equilibrium equations in finite difference form, and is combined with piecewise linearization of the nonlinear yield curve, thus converting the formulation into a linear programming exercise. Examples of reported cases involving plates and shells are solved to illustrate the ease of application of the present method, its flexibility and accuracy - features which it make attractive to practising engineers.
The beam string structure (BSS) has been widely applied in large span roof structures, while no analytical solutions of BSS were derived for it in the existing literature. In the first part of this paper, calculation formulas of displacement and internal forces were obtained by the Ritz-method for the most commonly used arc-shaped BSS under the vertical uniformly distributed load and the prestressing force. Then, the failure mode of BSS was proposed based on the static equilibrium. On condition the structural stability was reliable, BSS under the uniformly distributed load would fail by tensile strength failure of the string, and the beam remained in the elastic or semi-plastic range. On this basis, the limit load of BSS was given in virtue of the elastic solutions. In order to verify the linear elastic and limit state solutions proposed in this paper, three BSS modal were tested and the corresponding elastoplastic large deformation analysis was performed by the ANSYS program. The proposed failure mode of BSS was proved to be correct, and the analytical results for the linear elastic and limit state were in good agreement with the experimental and FEM results.
