  • This study is to evaluate the structural performance of columns in concrete moment frame. For this purpose the results of previous experimental studies were collected and compared. The experimental variables considered in this study are existance of lap splice within the possible plastic hinge region during an earthquake, ratio of longitudinal reinforcement axial load and the transverse reinforcement ratio. The strength, deformation, ductility capacity and the length of plastic hinge are compared in this study.

  • Onlay bone grafting, guided bone regeneration, and alveolar ridge split technique are considered reliable bone augmentation methods on the horizontally atrophic alveolar ridge. Among these techniques, alveolar ridge split procedures are technique-sensitive and difficult to perform in the posterior mandible. This case report describes successful implant placement with the use of piezoelectric hinge-assisted ridge split technique in an atrophic posterior mandible.

  • This paper evaluates the seismic response of three dimensional steel space buildings using the spread plastic hinge approach. A numerical study was carried out in which a sample steel space building was selected for pushover analysis and incremental nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. For the nonlinear analysis, three earthquake acceleration records were selected to ensure compatibility with the design spectrum defined in the Turkish Earthquake Code. The interstorey drift, capacity curve, maximum responses and dynamic pushover curves of the building were obtained. The analysis results were compared and good correlation was obtained between the idealized dynamic analyses envelopes with and static pushover curves for the selected building. As a result to more accurately account response of steel buildings, dynamic pushover envelopes can be obtained and compared with static pushover curve of the building.

  • This paper provides a method to predict the ductile capacity of reinforced concrete beams that fail in shear after flexural yielding. The proposed method takes into account shear strength deterioration in the plastic hinge region of RC beams. The shear contribution of the concrete in the plastic hinge region decreases after flexural yielding of the beam due to a decrease in the effective compressive strength of the concrete. To verify the shear strength and the corresponding ductility of the proposed method, 8 RC beams were tested under reversed cyclic loading.

  • In present Korea Highway Bridge Standards the lap splice of longitudinal bars in a potential plastic hinge region is allowed so that large amount of transverse rebar specified in high seismicity regions Is required to prevent brittle bond failure If the brittle failure effects can be completely removed from the conventional designed piers, the amount of transverse rebar will be reduced drastically. In this study scaled models with solid and hollow rectangular sections were tested to investigate the seismic behavior of RC piers with 50% of lap-spliced longitudinal bars in plastic hinge regions. In the tests the typical flexural failure conducting a ductile behavior were observed in both models. It is shown that the 50% of lap-spliced bars can be considered as a good alternative of seismic detailing for longitudinal bars.

  • This paper investigates the soil effect on seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings by using the spread plastic hinge model which includes material and geometric nonlinearity of the structural members. Therefore, typical reinforced concrete frame buildings are selected and nonlinear dynamic time history analyses and pushover analyses are performed. Three earthquake acceleration records are selected for nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. These records are adjusted to be compatible with the design spectrum defined in Turkish Seismic Code. Interstory drifts and damages of selected buildings are compared according to local soil classes. Also, capacity curves of these buildings are compared with maximum responses obtained from nonlinear dynamic time history analyses. The results show that, soil class influences the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete buildings, significantly.

  • Flange and web local buckling in beam plastic hinge regions of steel moment frames can prevent beam-column connections from achieving adequate plastic rotations under earthquake-induced forces. Reducing the flange-web slenderness ratios (FSR/WSR) of beams is the most effective way in mitigating local member buckling as stipulated in the latest seismic design specifications. However, existing steel moment frame buildings with beams that lack the adequate slenderness ratios set forth for new buildings are vulnerable to local member buckling and thereby system-wise instability prior to reaching the required plastic rotation capacities specified for new buildings. This paper presents results from a research study investigating the cyclic behavior of steel I-beams modified by a welded haunch at the bottom flange and reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymers at the plastic hinge region. Cantilever I-sections with a triangular haunch at the bottom flange and flange slenderness ratios higher then those stipulated in current design specifications were analyzed under reversed cyclic loading. Beam sections with different depth/width and flange/web slenderness ratios (FSR/WSR) were considered. The effect of GFRP thickness, width, and length on stabilizing plastic local buckling was investigated. The FEA results revealed that the contribution of GFRP strips to mitigation of local buckling increases with increasing depth/width ratio and decreasing FSR and WSR. Provided that the interfacial shear strength of the steel/GFRP bond surface is at least 15 MPa, GFRP reinforcement can enable deep beams with FSR of 8-9 and WSR below 55 to maintain plastic rotations in the order of 0.02 radians without experiencing any local buckling.

  • In this study, a computationally efficient parallel axial-flexural plastic hinge model is proposed for nonlinear dynamic progressive collapse analysis of welded steel moment frames. To this end, post-yield flexural behavior and the interaction of bending moment and axial force of the double-span beams in the column's missing event was first investigated by using material and geometric nonlinear parametric finite element analysis. A piece-wise linear parallel point hinge model that captures the moment-axial tension interaction was then proposed and applied to nonlinear dynamic progressive collapse analysis of welded steel moment frames with the use of the OpenSees Program. The accuracy as well as the efficiency of the proposed model was verified based on the inelastic dynamic finite element analysis results. The importance of including the catenary action effects for proper progressive collapse resistant analysis and design was also emphasized.

  • A kind of accordion-web RBS connection, "Tubular Web RBS (TW-RBS)" connection is proposed in this research. TW-RBS is made by replacing a part of web with a tube at the desirable location of the beam plastic hinge. This paper presents first a numerical study under cyclic load using ABAQUS finite element software. A test specimen is used for calibration and comparison of numerical results. Obtained results indicated that TW-RBS would reduce contribution of the beam web to the whole moment strength and creates a ductile fuse far from components of the beam-to-column connection. Besides, TW-RBS connection can increase story drift capacity up to 9% in the case of shallow beams which is much more than those stipulated by the current seismic codes. Furthermore, the tubular web like corrugated sheet can improve both the out-of-plane stiffness of the beam longitudinal axis and the flange stability condition due to the smaller width to thickness ratio of the beam flange in the plastic hinge region. Thus, the tubular web in the plastic hinge region improves lateral-torsional buckling stability of the beam as just local buckling of the beam flange at the center of the reduced section was observed during the tests. Also change of direction of strain in arc shape of the tubular web section is smaller than the accordion webs with sharp corners therefore the tubular web provides a better condition in terms of low-cycle fatigue than other accordion web with sharp corners.

  • To perform performance-based seismic design of buildings, it is necessary clear goal for usage and stability after an earthquake. To clear this goal, it requires a review of the constituent material of the building and, in particular, a member used as an indicator of the residual strain is useful. There are more usage of prestressed concrete because of prestressing steel witch has characteristics of the origin-oriented. In this study, the goal is estimating of residual strain on the prestressed concrete beam member. The expression for angle of deformed prestressed concrete beam member was obtained from using of curvature on the critical section and the equivalent plastic hinge length based on 'equivalent plastic hinge length method'. Considering the balance of strength and deformation conditions, suitable analysis values were derived from 'split Element Method'. Through various parametric studies, various factors affecting the residual strain were decided. Based on the results of this study, it is expected many researches will be proceed in the future.
