  • In this work, we prepared Fe-Ni alloy nanopowders by wire electrical explosion in deionized water and ethanol. Particles size and morphology of the as-synthesized nanoparticles prepared in water and ethanol were observed by transmission electron microscopy. In both cases, the as-synthesized nanoparticles were in nearly spherical shape and their size distribution was broad. The particles prepared in the water were in core-shell structure due to the oxidation of Fe element. X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the phase of the nanopowders. It showed that the nanopowders prepared in water had ${\gamma}$-Fe-Ni solid solution and FeO phase. The samples obtained in ethanol were in two phases of Fe-Ni solid solution, ${\gamma}$-Fe-Ni and ${\alpha}$-Fe-Ni. Bulk samples were made from the as-synthesized nanopowders by spark plasma sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. Structure of the bulk sample was observed by scanning electron microscope. Magnetic properties of the as-synthesized nanopowders and the bulk samples were investigated by vibrating sample magnetometer. The hysteresis loop of the assynthesized nanopowders and the sintered bulk samples revealed a ferromagnetic characteristic.

  • The effects of Al-substitution on thermoelectric and charge transport properties of BiCuOSe compounds were investigated. The compounds were prepared by a solid-state reaction and consolidated by SPS (spark plasma sintering). In spite of the increase in the hole concentration with increasing Al amounts in BiCuOSe compound, the electrical conductivity at room temperature was kept constant due to the reduction of mobility. However, electrical conductivities of Al-substituted BiCuOSe compounds at elevated temperature (> 600 K) were higher than those of BiCuOSe, and this result was discussed in terms of it's the band gap energy. The Seebeck coefficient was drastically reduced when Al was substituted in Bi site, which indicated that the electronic structure was influenced by the Al-substitution into Bi-site.

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties of tungsten at room and elevated temperature, hafnium carbide (HfC) reinforced tungsten matrix composites were prepared using the spark plasma sintering technique. The effect of HfC content on the compressive strength and flexural strength of the tungsten composites was investigated. Mechanical properties of the composites were also measured at elevated temperatures and their trends, with varying reinforcement volume fraction, were studied. The effect of reinforcement fraction on the thermal properties of the composites was investigated. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the composites decreased with increasing temperature and reinforcement volume fraction. An inherently low thermal conductivity of the reinforcement as well as interfacial losses was responsible for lower values of thermal conductivity of the composites. Values of coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites were observed to increase with HfC volume fraction.

  • Micro-holes of conductive ceramic are required in micro structures. Micro-electrical discharge machining (Micro-EDM) is an effective machining method since EDM is as process for shaping hard metals and complex-shaped holes by spark erosion in all kinds of electro-conductive materials. However, as the depth of micro hole increases, the machining condition becomes more unstable due to inefficient removal of debris between the electrode and the workpiece. In this paper, micro-EDM was performed to evaluate machining characteristic such as electrode wear, machining time, taper angle, radial clearance with varying voltage and ultrasonic vibration on 10 vol.% Carbon-nanotube reinforced conductive $Al_2O_3$ composite fabricated by spark plasma sintering in previous research.

  • In this paper, pure $I_{ph}$ and hybrid carbon nanotube reinforced $I_{ph}$ were sintered using the SPS(spark plasma sintering) method for high densification. A nanosecond laser (${\lambda}=1063nm$, ${\tau}P=10ns$) and a femtosecond laser (${\lambda}=1027nm$, ${\tau}P=380fs$) were installed on an optical system for the micromachining test. The ablation characteristics of the pure $I_{ph}$ and CNT/$I_{ph}$ composites, such as thermal effect and ablation depth, were investigated using FE-SEM and a confocal microscope device. Laser machining results for the two mating materials showed improved performances: CNT/$I_{ph}$ composites showed good surface morphology of hole drilling without a melting zone due to the composites' high thermal properties; also, the ablated depth of CNT/$I_{ph}$ was higher than that of pure $I_{ph}$.

  • The effects of $Gd_2O_3$ addition and sintering condition on optical and electrical properties of MgO films as a protective layer for AC plasma display panels were investigated. Doped MgO films prepared by the e-beam evaporation have a higher ${\Upsilon}$ (secondary electron emission coefficient) than pure MgO protective layer. Relative density and grain size increased with amount of $Gd_2O_3$ up to 100 ppm and then decreased further addition. These results showed that discharge properties and optical properties of MgO protective layers seemed to be closely related with microstructure factors such as relative density and grain size. Good optical and electrical properties of ${\Upsilon}$ of 0.138, surface roughness of 5.77 nm and optical transmittance of 95.76 % were obtained for the MgO+100 ppm $Gd_2O_3$ protective layer sintered at $1700^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs.

  • Composites comprising various volume fractions of crystalline nickel and bulk amorphous (BA) were produced by means of electroless coating of nickel on BA powder of $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS) of coated BA powder. The flow curves of composites at various temperatures in the supercooled liquid region were determined by the uniaxial compression test with various strain rates. During compression at $450^{\circ}C$ with $\dot{\varepsilon}=2\times10^{-3}$, the monolithic BA sample and crystalline-BA composites displayed the superplastic deformation with $\varepsilon>1.4$. At temperatures above $460^{\circ}C$, the stress-strain curve of the monolithic BA sample depicted a sharp peak stress and a fellowing stress drop due to cracking, while those of the crystalline-BA composites displayed work-hardening up to the imposed strain. FEM analysis indicated that a fairly homogeneous strain state prevailed throughout the composite, while a higher level of stress was obtained in a harder BA.

  • MoN-Cu thin films were prepared to achieve appropriate properties of high hardness and low friction coefficient, which could be applied to automobile engine parts for reducing energy consumption as well as solving wear problems. Composite thin films of MoN-Cu have been deposited by various processes using multiple targets such as Mo and Cu. However, those deposition with multiple targets revealed demerits such as difficulties in exact control of composition and homogeneous deposition. This study is aiming for suggesting an appropriate process to solve those problems. A single alloying target of Mo-Cu (10 at%) was prepared by powder metallurgy methods of mechanical alloying (MA) and spar plasma sintering (SPS). Thin film of MoN-Cu was then deposited by magnetron sputtering using the single alloying target of Mo-Cu (10 at%). Properties of the resulting MoN-Cu thin film were examined and compared to those of MoN-Cu thin films prepared with double targets of Mo and Cu.

  • To improve the mechanical properties of aluminum, graphene has been used as a reinforcing material, yielding graphene-reinforced aluminum matrix composites (GRAMCs). Dispersion of graphene materials is an important factor that affects the properties of GRAMCs, which are mainly manufactured by mechanical mixing methods such as ball milling. However, the use of only mechanical mixing process is limited to achieve homogeneous dispersion of graphene. To overcome this problem, in this study, we have prepared composite materials by coating aluminum particles with graphene by a self-assembly reaction using poly vinylalcohol and ethylene diamine as coupling agents. The scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results confirm the coating of graphene on the Al surface. Bulk density of the sintered composites by spark plasma sintering achieved a relative density of over 99% up to 0.5 wt.% graphene oxide content.

  • In this study, the relationship between corrosion resistance and microstructural characteristics such as grain size reduction, preferred orientation, and homogenous distribution of elements and impurity by mechanical milling of magnesium powder was investigated. Mechanical milling of pure magnesium powder exhibited a complex path to grain refinement and growth together with preferred orientation reversal with milling time. It was also found that anisotropic formation of dislocation on the basal plane of magnesium was initially the dominant mechanism for grain size reduction. After 60 hrs of milling, grain coarsening was observed and interpreted as a result of the strain relaxation process through recrystallization. In spite of the finer grain size and strong (002) texture developed in the sample prepared by spark plasma sintering at $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 min after mechanical milling for 2hrs, the sample showed a higher corrosion rate. The results from this study will be helpful for better understanding of the controlling factor for corrosion resistance and behaviors of mechanical milled magnesium powders.
