MPT, which has been developed recently, is very tolerant to aqueous samples. Several types of MPT have been investigated and is found that the double concentric tube could sustain a stable plasma at a low plasma gas flow rate. However, the tip of torch is easily ruined. Triple concentric torch has shown the best stability and the plasma shape, much like that of ICP, especially when the central channel is quartz. The plasma is exposed and mixed with air as is suggested from the background spectrum, which leads to quenching of He MPT. Sensitivity of helium MPT equipped with a membrane desolvator has shown 10 times lower than that of Argon MPT for most of elements except for the ones with relatively high excitation energy. He MPT requires small plasma flow rate (about 1.6 L/min), stable and simple to use. Excitational temperature and electron number density measured are 4950 K and 3.28 ${\times}$$10^{14}cm^{-3}$, respectively.
Okamoto cavity was modified to generate high power (2.45 GHz, 2 kW) He, N2 and Ar plasmas with WR-340 waveguide. Many factors which influence to the plasma generation were optimized and investigated for the spectroscopic properties of the He plasma generated. Some of the important factors are the diameter of the inner conductor, the distance between the inner and outer conductors and the distance between the tip of the inner conductor and the torch. After optimization for the He, two torches (a commercial mini torch for ICP and a tangential flow torch made locally) were compared and showed similar results for the helium plasma gas flow of 25 L/min~30 L/min. A tall torch (extended) was used to block the air in-flow and reduced the background intensity at 340 nm region (NH band). Emission intensity was measured for determination of halogen element in the aqueous solution with power and carrier gas flow rate. Electron number density and the excitation temperature were on the order of $3.67{\times}10^{11}/cm^3$ and 4,350 K, respectively. These values are similar or a bit smaller than other microwave plasmas. It has been possible to analyze aqueous samples. The detection limit for Cl (479.45 nm) was obtained to be 116 mg/L and needs analytical optimization for the better performance.

The properties of wastes for melting need to be considered to minimize the maintenance of refractory and to discharge the molten slags smoothly from a plasma torch melter. When the nonflammable wastes from nuclear facilities such as concrete debris, glass, sand, etc., are melted, they become acid slags with low basicity since the chemical composition has much more acid oxides than basic oxides. A molten slag does not have good characteristics of discharge and is mainly responsible for the refractory erosion due to its low liquidity. In case of a stationary plasma torch melter with a slant tapping port on the wall, a fixed amount of molten slags remains inside of tapping hole as well as the melter inside after tapping out. Nonmetallic slags keep the temperature higher than melting point of metal because metallic slags located on the bottom of melter by specific gravity difference are simultaneously melted when dual mode plasma torch operates in transferred mode. In order to minimize the refractory erosion, the compatible refractories are selected considering the temperature inside the melter and the melting behavior of slags whether to contact or noncontact with molten slags. An acidic refractory shall not be installed in adjacent to a basic refractory for the resistibility against corrosion.

The high temperature thermal plasma technology applied to waste treatment has undoubtedly gained high importance owing to its outstanding properties such as flexibility, compact reactor. and clean treatment as the environmental problem goes to a main issue in public talks, because the thermal plasma with temperature of around 10,000K or little less is particularly suitable for waste treatment. Since the thermal plasma is, in general, governed by a number of parameters, some complicated and elaborate controls might be mandatory. The high maintenance cost caused by big input power has been a main obstacle to the growth of the waste treatment plant based on thermal plasma technology, but the recent R&D on the waste-to-energy shows that the problem could be solved soon. In this paper, the authors introduce the current R&D activity related to three-phase ac plasma torch in KERI.
In this paper, argon gas was used for numerical analysis of an arc in a cutting plasma torch driven by constant current. We established nozzle-constricting type torch domain and calculated steady state characteristics of argon arc plasma using the control volume method(CVM). For simplicity, we assumed that the flow field is laminar and the local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE) prevails in all domain regions. We also neglected cathode-fall and anode-fall effects. Considering magnetic pinch effect and viscosity effect, we solved the momentum equation. Voltage drop in the arc column due to input current was calculated from the temperature field obtained by the energy balance equation.
This paper describes weld seam tracking and error compensation methods of automatic plasma arc welding system designed for the corrugation panel that consists of a linear section and a curved section with various curvatures. Realizing automatic welding system, we are faced with two problems. One is a precise seam tracking and the other is an arc length control. Due to the complexity of the panel shape, it is difficult to find a seam and operate a torch manually in the welding process. So, laser vision sensor for seam tracking is equipped for sensing the seam position and controlling the height of a torch automatically. To attain more precise measurement of an arc length, we measure the 3D shape of the panel and analyze error factors according to the various panel states and caused errors are predicted through the welding process. Using that result, compensation algorithm is added to that of arc length control and real time error compensation is achieved. The result shows that these two methods work effectively.

In this paper, the efficient layout method for generating common and continuous cutting path of flat-bar profile. The ‘flat -bar’ is a stiffener and has long rectangular shape. This paper describes a fast nesting algorithm of the flat-bar, and a procedure to generate cutting path of gas/plasma torch, which is operated by a NC (numerically controlled) gas/plasma cutting machine. By using this common and continuous path, the machining-time for cutting and the maintenance-cost of plasma-torch could be reduced. Proposed procedures are written in C-language and applied to the Interactive Flat-Bar-Nesting System executable on Open VMS with X-Window system.

In order to understand the mechanism of the synthesis of particles using a plasma torch, it is necessary to understand the reaction mechanisms using a computer simulation. In this study, we have developed a simulation method to combine the Lagrangian scheme to follow microparticles and a nodal method to treat nanoparticles categorized with different particle sizes. The Lagrangian scheme includes the Coulomb force which affects the dynamics of larger particles. In contrast, the nodal method is adequate for the nanoparticles because the charge effect is negligible for nanoparticles but the number of nanoparticles is much larger than that of microparticles. This method is helpful to understand the dynamics and growth mechanism of micro- and nano-powder mixture observed in the experiment.
This paper describes an automatic weld seam tracking method of plasma arc welding system designed for the corrugation panel that consists of a linear section and a curved section with various curvatures. Due to the complexity of the panel shape, it is difficult to find a seam and operate a torch manually in the welding process. So, the laser vision sensor for seam tracking is designed for sensing the seam position and controlling a torch automatically. To achieve precise seam tracking, the design of sensor head, image simulation, and calibration are carried out. Through a series of experiment result, compensation algorithm is added and real time error compensation is achieved. The experiment result shows that this vision sensor works effectively. It will provide more precise welding performance and convenience to the operator.

A performance of the torch greatly depends on the plasma gas and the cooling gas. The plasma gas constricted by the nozzle concentrates electric power and momentum, so it can eject molten metal from a cut. As an electric arc constricted in a nozzle is more constricted through thermal pinch by the cooling gas, it is possible to transfer larger thermal concentration to the workpiece. The optimized parameter value in this study was given below. Plasma gas pressure is $4[kgf/cm^2]$ and gas mass flow is $30[{\ell}/min]$. Cooling gas pressure is $6[kgf/cm^2]$ and gas mass flow is $120[{\ell}/min]$.
