  • A parametric study is conducted for the segmented arc plasma torch with the input power and current of 0.4 MW and 300 A, respectively. For this purpose, we use the analytical relationship equations between plasma temperature, inner diameter (R) and length (L) of the torch constrictor at the given input power and current conditions based on the arc channel model. The results reveal that arc plasma temperatures show non-linear behavior or absence corresponding to the variations of L and R when their values become larger than 1.25 m and 7.5 mm, respectively. For L < 1.25 m and R < 7.5 mm, however, they can increase monotonically as L increase or R decrease when one of both parameters is fixed. From these parametric study results, optimum ranges of R and L are suggested as $5.5mm{\leq}R{\leq}7.0mm$ and $0.5m{\leq}L{\leq}1.0m$ for 0.4 MW class segmented arc plasma torch, under which stable arc plasma with the temperatures of ~15,000 K can be achived at the input currents of ~300 A.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the polymerization ability of three different light sources by microhardness test. Stainless steel molds of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm in thickness of 7 mm in diameter were prepared. The hybrid composite Z100 was packed into the hole of the mold and curing light was activated for designated time. Three different light sources, conventional halogen, light emitting diode, and plasma arc, were used for curing of composite. Two different curing times applied ; one is to follow the manufacturers recommendation and the other is to extend the curing time of LED and plasma arc for balancing the light energy with halogen. Immediately after curing, the Vickers hardness was measured at the bottom of specimen. The results were as follows. 1 The composite cured with LED showed equal to higher microhardnesss than halogen. 2. The composite was cured with plasma arc by manufacturers recommendation showed lowest micro-hardness at all thickness. However, when curing time was extended, microhardness was higher than the others. In conclusion, this study suggested that plasma arc needs properly extended curing time.

  • In this study the heat transfer and fluid flow of the molten pool in stationary gas tungsten arc welding using argon shielding gas were investigated. Transporting phenomena from the welding arc to the base material surface, such as current density, heat flux, arc pressure and shear stress acting on the weld pool surface, were taken from the simulation results of the corresponding welding arc. Various driving forces for the weld pool convection were considered, self-induced electromagnetic, surface tension, buoyancy, and impinging plasma arc forces. Furthermore, the effect of surface depression due to the arc pressure acting on the molten pool surface was considered. Because fusion boundary has a curved and unknown shape during welding, a boundary-fitted coordinate system was adopted to precisely describe the boundary for the momentum equation. The numerical model was applied to AISI 304 stainless steel and compared with the experimental results.

  • One of the purposes of arc control is to change its state to the diffuse state before current zero as soon as possible. This can provide optimal conditions for full extinction of arc by minimizing the quantity of residual plasma between contacts near current zero. TRV(transient recovery voltage) occurs at current zero at the same time with current interruption. If there is substantial residual plasma near current zero it can cause 'post arc current' by the interaction of its conductance with TRV. In this paper, arc control ability as a function of configuration of spiral type VI contacts was compared on the criteria of the time taken for arc to reach to the diffuse state.

  • The plasma process is applied to various industrial fields such as high-tech IT industry, textiles and medical. Therefore, there is increasing interest in the plasma power supply, and demand for power devices of high efficiency and high power density is increased. Plasma power supply for process must solve the arc problem, when the plasma is unstable. The output capacitor is closely related to the arc problem. If the output capacitor is smaller, the damage from the arc problem is reduced. However, the small value of the output capacitor affects the operating characteristics of the power supply. In this paper, a LLC resonant converter is adopted, because it can achieve high efficiency and power density in the plasma DC power supply. However, due to the small value of the output capacitor, the converter is operated as a LLCC resonant converter. Therefore, a gain characteristic of LLCC resonant converter is analyzed by using the FHA (First Harmonic Approximation) in plasma power supply. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the characteristic analysis of LLCC Resonant Converter.

  • In this paper, argon gas was used for numerical analysis of an arc in a cutting plasma torch driven by constant current. We established nozzle-constricting type torch domain and calculated steady state characteristics of argon arc plasma using the control volume method(CVM). For simplicity, we assumed that the flow field is laminar and the local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE) prevails in all domain regions. We also neglected cathode-fall and anode-fall effects. Considering magnetic pinch effect and viscosity effect, we solved the momentum equation. Voltage drop in the arc column due to input current was calculated from the temperature field obtained by the energy balance equation.

  • The computational investigation is performed to find out the interaction of arc plasmas with surrounding materials and the thermal flow characteristics in a PASB (Puffer-Assisted Self-Blast) chamber, which is one of new breaking concepts in $SF_6$ switchgears. It is very important to define the flow and mass transfer happened during the full arcing history for further understanding complex physics inside the chamber. In this study, we have considered two diffusion processes by the hot arc plasma, one is PTFE nozzle ablation and the other is Cu electrode evaporation, simultaneously. It was found that the principle of the pressure-rise inside the chamber is confirmed by the computational results and the increase of the electrical conductivity of the residual gas near current zero is critical to the chamber design.

  • Use of a plasma arc as the source of energy for penetration welding of thin plates gives rise to a cylindrical hole surrounded by the molten metal. Material moves from the front to the rear of the hole by flowing around the hole as the workpiece is translated relatively to the arc. Based on the finite difference method, three different computer models have been proposed for the steady state, two dimensional heat and mass flow during the plasma arc welding. In the formulation energy equation was derived by the energy blance method through the cell control volume, and all the governing equations derived for the fixed coordinates was translated for the moving coordinate system. The driving force for fluid flow being considered was only electromagnetic force. The calculated and measured molten poon and HAZ width were compared and better agreement was obtained for the models considering the keyhole effect.

  • This paper treats with some of plasma jet behaviors under magnetic field for the purpose of controlling important characteristics of plasma jet in the practices of material manufacturings. Under the existence and non-existence of magnetic field, the pressure distribution, flame length, stability and noise of plasma jet are comparatively evaluated in respect of such parameters as are current, gap of electrode, quantity of argon flow, magnetic flux density, diameter and length of nozzle. The results are as follows: 1) the pressure, the length and the noise of plasma jet rise gradually with the increase of are current, and have high values under identical arc current as the diameter of nozzle increases, but reverse phenomenon tends to appear in the noise. 2) The pressure, the flame length and the noise increase with the increased quantity of argon flow, and the rising slope of noise is particularly steep. Under magnetic field, the quantity of argon flow in respect of flame length has the critical value of 80(cfh). 3) The pressure and length of flame decrease with small gradient value as the length of gap increases, but the noise tends to grow according to the increase of nozzle diameter. 4) The pressure and the length of jet flame decrease inversly with the increase of magnetic flux density, which have one critical value in the 100 amps of arc current and two values in 50 amps. The pressure of jet flame can be below atomospher pressure in strong magnetic field. 5) "The constriction length of nozzle has respectively the critical value of 6(mm) for pressure and 23(mm) for the length of flame. 6) Fluctuations in the wave form of voltage become greater with the increase of argon flow and magnetic flux density, but tends to decrease as arc current increases, having the frequency range of 3-8KHz. The wave form of noise changes almost in parallel with that of voltage and its changing value increases with argon flow, arc current and magnetic flux density, having the freuqency range of 6-8KHz. The fluctuation of jet presurre is reduced with the increase of argon flow and magnetic flux density and grows with arc current.rent.
