This study was carried out to determine the effect of various fertilizer levels, sowing time and planting density on the growth and yield of Scuteliaria baicalensis GEORGE cultivated after the barley in the southern coastal areas of Korea under the non- mulching condition by direct sowing culture. The flowering date of medium dressing plot(N : P$_2$O$\sub$5/ : K$_2$O=9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a) and heavy dression plot(N : P$_2$O$\sub$5/, : K$_2$O=12 :18 : 12kg/10a) were July 23. The flowering date of the medium and the heavy dressing plot was delayed by 3days compared with that of non-fertilizing plot. The growth characteristics such as stem length, diameter of main stem, number of branch per plant, main root length, main root length, main root thickness and dry weight of stem leaves were more increased at medium dressing plot than that of other fertilizer levels, The root dry weight of in Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGE cultivated after barley was hlghest at the fertilizing plot of N : P$_2$O$\sub$5/ : K$_2$O=9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a. The dried-root yield was 178kg in medium dressing plot, 167kg in standard dressing pot, and 126kg in non-dressing plot, The dried-root yield of medium dressing plot was 7% and 41 cie higher than that of standard dressing pot and non-dressing control plot, respectively. Emergence and flowering dates in the sowing time of June 1 were earlier than those of the other sowing times. In the sowing time of June 1, length and diameter of main stem, number of node per main stem, number of branch per plant and dry weight of stem leaves were greater than those of sowing times of June 10 and June 20. Yield components such as main stem length and diameter, main stem numbers, branches per plant, dry weight of stem leaves, main root length and thickness, number of large root and fine root per plant, and dry weight of root were the highest at the sewing time of June 1 as the yield of 71.3kg/10a. Optimum sowing time of Scuteilaria baicaiensis GEORGE cultivated after barley was June 1 in southern areas of Korea. Stem length was long in dense planting of 20${\times}$10cm and short in spacious planting of 30${\times}$10cm and 40${\times}$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Stem diameter was thick in spacious planting of 30${\times}$10cm and 40${\times}$10cm and was thin in dense planting of 20${\times}$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Length and dry weight of root per plant were decreased in dense planting of 20${\times}$10cm and were increased in spacious planting of 30${\times}$10cm and 40${\times}$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Yield of dry root was highest in optimum planting density(30${\times}$10cm 33 plants/㎡) by direct sowing cultivated after barley. The correlation coefficient between number of planting plant and stem length showed highly positive correlation. These characters of stem diameter, number of branches, main root length and yield of dry root mentioned above showed negative correlations with planting plants.

In order to know the effect of planting date and cutting management on Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus truberosus L.) as a new forage or energy crop, JA tubes were planted from April 7 to June 27 with 20 day interval. Growth and yield could stay high as normal planting if tuber planting had been done until late May. The delayed planting after June caused deterioration of seed tuber, produced poor emergence and retarded growth. Previous harvested field did not need additional planting every spring because there were enough leftover tubers usually small size, less than 3gr., to provide a dense seedling establishment. This plot had too dense in population to adjust its spacing by thinning some of seedlings. One or two times cutting for forage or silage production reduced tuber yield very significantly. Therefore, it was not a good management to harvest for both forage and tuber production. Topping at 20cm from growing point in early July prevented from lodging and assured tuber yield.

This study was conducted to obtain the basic informations for producing high quality seeds of vegetable soybeans. Four vegetable soybean cultivars, 'Okharawase', 'Mikawashima', 'Hwaeomputkong', and 'Seokryangputkong' were planted at four locations, Chulwon(altitude, 192m) and Pyeongchang(altitude, 370m) in highland, and Suwon(altitude, 37m)and Daegu(altitude, 55m) in lowland of Korea with two planting dates, May 15 and June 15. Seed infection rates were attributed by in order of phomopsis seed decay caused by Phomopsis spp., seed mottling caused by soybean mosaic virus (SMV), purple seed stain caused by Cercospora kikuchii. Seed infectron rate was the lowest at Pyeongchang and lower on June 15 than on May 15 planting. Phomopsis seed decay by Phomopsis spp. was lower in highland of Korea, Pyeongchang and Chulwon, than in lowland of Korea, Suwon and Daegu. Seed infection rate was also lower on June 15 planting than on May 15, and in seeds harvested at maturity than at ten days after maturity. Germination rate of seeds harvested in highland, Pyeongchang and Chulwon, after six to seven month storage at 5$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ was more than 90% and higher than that of the seeds in lowland, Suwon and Daegu. Germination rate was also higher on June 15 than on May 15 planting.
In developing dynamic growth model of a crop, it is important to estimate accurate dry matter partition to different parts of crop plants. Two rice varieties, Samkang and Chucheong, were transnplanted with three planting densities of 72. 90 and 120 hills per 3.3㎡ on May 30 and June 15 in 1988 to study the effect of planting density on dry matter partition in rice plants. Total dry wight per square meter of two varieteis in May 30 transplanting were greater than those in June 15 transplanting. Total dry wights were increased as planting density was increased. The response of dry weights of differents parts of rice plants per hill were decreased as the density was increased. Although the difference in dry weights of leaf blade and stem and sheath between two varieties was not great, greater ear weight of Samkang resulted in greater total dry weight than that of Chucheong. Despite of transplant in date and planting density on dry weights, the ratio of dry matter partition to different parts of rice plants at a certain growth stage remained constant. Estimated dry weights of different parts at two stages of growth based on average ratio of dry matter partition over two transplantion dates and planting densities agreed well with those observed.
This study was conducted to obtain basic informations for breeding and improving cultural practices of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) through investigation of several agronomic characters of 82 major varieties plants in April 20, May 15 and June 20. Stem diameter and plant height were largest in early planting(April 20). On the contrary, they were smallest in late planting(June 15). Therefore, the later planting, the poorer the vegetative growth on the basis of stem diameter and plant height. Number of capsules per plant and number of grains per capsule were 88 and 54, respectively, in the early planting, while they were decreased to 25 capsules and 40 grains in late planting. The percentage of ripeness and 1000 grain weight 78 and 2.3g in the April 20planting while they were 58% and 2.1g in June 20 planting indicating the later planting, the lower the ripeness. Grain yield per m1 in April 20 and June 20 planting was 112 and 18g respectively. Consequently, grain yield significantly decreased as planting delayed. On the basis of the vegetative and reproductive growth, varieties could be classified into early, conventional, late and indetermediate planting adapted groups. The major yield components were highly and postively correlated with accmulated sunshine hours and temperatures confirming that grain yield was closely related with sunshine and temperature. Among the varieties tested, Gurye and Local 135 had more than 150 capsules. Haenam and Woogang had more than 75 grains per capsule. Since grain yield oflate planted sesame were significantly different among the varieties, breeding of sesame for after barly cropping would be more effective under late cultural condition of after barly.

A total of 15 different corn hybrids, Kwangpyeongok, Gangdaok, Yanganok, Singwangok, Jangdaok, Cheonganok, Cheongdaok, Andaok, Dapyeongok, Pyeongkangok, Pyeonganok, Daanok, Sunwon 184, Gangilok, and P3394 was used to investigate the growth and yield depending on the sowing date. The sowing dates were April 5, June 25, and July 5 and each experiments was performed in triplicste. The growth of Gangdaok was the highest. However, although the growth of Kwangpyeongok, was lower thanthar of Gangdaok, its stem height to ear height ratio was lower than that of Gangdaok, thus, Kwangpyeongok may be more suitable for stable cultivation. Both growth and yield of Daanok were low, regardless of planting date, but yield and ear shape of Pyeongkangok and Dapyeongok were for fresh corn. Growth and yield of the 15 different corn hybrids varied depending on the planting date, However, the growth degree days (GDD) was the most important factor governing the maturity of corn. More than $1500^{\circ}C$ of GDD was sufficient to harvest mature corn hybrids in the central region of Korea. Besides yield and growth, other characteristics, such as sweetness and taste of the hybrids, should be investigated further the selection of the best corn hybrid.
The plant growth and yield of Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Breit. were studied by altitude and tuber weight. The emergence rates in low land area were not different by tuber weights, but it showed earlier emergence date in heavier weight of seed-tuber and low land area. The higher aerial growth such as plant height and number of leaves per plant was the heavier tuber weight in a planting year, but the growth was not different by the weight of tuber at second year after planting. The distribution pattern of tuber size per $m^2$ was not influenced by different seed-tuber weight. The number of harvested tuber was highest at more than 1 g of tuber weight, and followed 1~2 g and less than 2 g. The distribution pattern of fresh tuber yield was not influenced by different altitude and seed-tuber weight. The marketable tuber, 2 g or more, tends to be produced with more than 0.6 g seed-tuber. As the results above-mentioned, it was thought that the high yield was supposed to use seed-tuber over 0.6 g in the fertile soil.
Oriental tobacco (KA 101) was transplanted from Mar. 25 to May 5 with 10 days interval in 1984 and 1985, and its agronomic characteristics, chemical properties ware compared to determine the Proper transplanting time of aromatic tobacco In Korea. As the transplanting was delayed, days to flowering of plant was shortened, length and width of largest leaf, leaf area index tended to decrease. Yield was highest for the Apr. 5th transplanting followed by Mar. 25th planting, then decreased as the planting date was delayed. Quality by price decreased as the transplanting was delayed later than Apr. 25. Delaying transplanting increased nicotine, total nitrogen and ash content, but decreased reducing sugar and petroleum ether extract of cured leaves, The content of volatile organic acids such as 3-methyl pentanoic acid was lower when it was transplanted later than Apr. 25th. Neophytadiene content increased as the transplanting was delayed, but there were no trends with the content of alcohols, aldehydes esters and ketones. Several quality indices including the ratio between the content of volatile organic acids plus petroleum ether extract and ash content plus pH was higher for the Apr. 5th transplanting.

No comprehensive tillage system of corn (Zea mays L.) has been conducted in Korea. Therefore, this experiment was carried to determine soil characteristics, weed and forage production in tillage system of corn. Plot was allotted to one of four treatments in a randomized block design using tillage system. The four treatments were (T1) conventional tillage, plow and rotary till, (T2) rotary till, (T3) disk till, and (T4) no-till system. In soil characteristics before planting and after harvest of corn, pH and organic matter at planting date was higher than at harvest date, however, there were no difference among tillage system. Days from planting to silking of no-till was the longest among tillage system. Lodging resistance of disk and no-till were higher than conventional and rotary till due to its thicken stem diameter. Main weed in corn field are barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgall), velvetleaf(Abutilon avicennae), crabgrass (Digitatia saguinalis), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus). Weed population was lower in no-till than others tillage system. Dry matter (DM) content and ear percentage of conventional and rotary till were higher than others in corn field. However, DM and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields of disk and no-till were higher than those of conventional and rotary till. Therefore, disk and no-till are more suitable in corn silage system because of high lodging resistance and forage yield, and low weed population.
These studies were carried out to find out the most reasonable planting density and :adequate amount of nitrogen fertilizer for the pearl barley. and results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The planting densities affected neither the heading date nor the maturing date of p. earl barley. 2. The planting density of 90cm X (30cm+30cm) was the most adequate for high yield and that of $40cm{\times}20cm$ which was the most densely planted plot in this experiment showed the lowest grain yield. 3. The height and weight of stem were significantly increased by increased fertilization of nitrogen. 4. The highest grain yield per 10a (613kg/10a) was resulted from the nitrogen fertilization of 20kg/10a. and the plot of which amount of nitrogen fertilization was 15kg/10a showed the grain yield of 603kg per 10a. But there was not significant difference between two plots mentioned above. 5. Single plant per hill was the most effective for high yield of pearl barley and 3 plants per hill dropped the grain yield of 28.4%.
