An efficient low-input system (LIS) for fertiliser use in rice cultivation is necessary to reduce fossil energy use and pollution. Japanese people like Japonica rice, especially cv. Koshihikari. However, it has very low lodging resistance in Japanese weather condition. Our objective was to develop a LIS with the minimum sacrifice of grain yield in rice. Koshihikari was grown using conventional fertilization as a control (CON) with 4 g N $m^{-2}$., 8g $P_2$$O_{5}$$m^{-2}$ and 8 g $K_2$O $m^{-2}$ as a basal fertilizer dressing. It was compared with a low fertilizer treatment (LF) with only 4 g $P_2$$O_{5}$$m^{-2}$ as a basal dressing in the first year and no basal phosphorus fertilizer in the second year. Chopped rice straw was incorporated into the soil before the cropping season in both years. Fertilizer of 4 g N $m^{-2}$ was top-dressed at 15 days before heading in CON plots and 30 days before heading in LF plots in both years. Lodging was significantly less in LF than in CON plots, however, no rice straw effect was found in low fertilized condition. Grain yields in LF plots were reduced by 15-16% below those of CON plots. Lower yields in LF plots were associated with a reduced number of spikelets per unit area. However, big spikelet size was acquired in LF by 10 days earlier N top dressing than CON plots. A close relationship was found between spikelet numbers and N content of the plant at heading, and between grain yield or shoot dry weight and N content of the plant at maturity. Regardless of the fertilizer application methods, N use efficiency for the number of spikelets, final total dry matter and grain yield was essentially identical among fertilizer treatments. The reduced growth and yield in the LF plots resulted from low absorption of nitrogen. Conclusively, LIS can drastically reduce chemical fertilizer use and facilitate harvest operations by reducing lodging with some yield reduction..

Jet Bubbling Reactors(JBRs) were operated for the removal of SO$_{x}$ in flue gases produced from many electric power plants. However, many JBR flue gas desulfurization (FGD) facility faced a decrease of SO$_{x}$ removal efficiency and an increase of scale problems with continuous operations. We increased alkalinity of the SO$_{2}$ absorbing medium by adding the dibasic acids (DBAs) to solve these problems more effectively. The SO$_{2}$ removal efficiency, the purity of CaCO$_{3}$ and COD of the wastewater was measured to identify the addition effects of DBAs (150, 200, 250, and 400 ppm) for 2hr in a day into the JBR attached to the large-scale power plants (400 MW$\times$3). Addition of the DBAs resulted in the improvement of the SO$_{2}$ removal efficiency from 2 to 5% and the purity of the gypsum from 1 to 2%; these improvement were due to the alkalinity increase of the absorbing medium and the reduction of a proportion of un-reacted CaCO$_{3}$, respectively. Also, the scale problems formed by un-reacted CaCO$_{3}$ inside the reaction zone of the JBR were substantially reduced. Even though the effluent COD of the wastewater slightly increased from 10~15 to 18~36 mg/l and the erosion problems in the injection pump and duct occurred, this method of increasing SO$_{2}$ removal efficiency by adding the DBAs could be considered as a profitable approach.ach.

In this paper, simulation methods of the system dynamics model developed by Das et al. (1997) for activated-sludge wastewater treatment plants are illustrated in an attempt to determine the operating rules and the policies related to capacity expansion of an activated-sludge wastewater treatment plant. For existing conditions, the analyses were performed by varying activated-sludge return rate to observe changes in effluent water quality and treatment efficiency. The effluent water quality is also analyzed for various average daily inflow conditions and activated-sludge return rates. As a result, without expanding the aeration tank, maximum average daily inflow that can satisfy the effluent water quality standard of BOD $0.02kg/m^3$ was determined as $2,840m^3/hr$, subject to 100% of activated-sludge return rate while other factors remain constant. When the activated-sludge return rate is less than 100%, expansion of the aeration tank is necessary and minimum sizes of the aeration tank to satisfy the effluent water quality standard were determined for various activated-sludge return rates. In addition, the total operating and maintenance as well as unit treatment cost regression equations for activated-sludge wastewater treatment plants are suggested by using the cost data that are obtained from Water and Wastewater Division, Ministry of Environment. The regression analyses showed that the economies of scale phenomena exist in the operating and maintenance costs of activated-sludge wastewater treatment plants.

In offshore plants, various equipments including cranes and davits are used for safety management. Hydraulic cylinder type actuators are mainly used for luffing operations such as cranes and davits. However, in the case of a cylinder using hydraulic pressure, a separate power pack is required to supply hydraulic pressure. When used for a long time, maintenance costs such as sticking of hydraulic valves, contamination of hydraulic oil and deterioration of hydraulic hoses occur. In addition, a lot of hydraulic oil is used in the handling of cranes and davits, which causes marine pollution due to management problems. As a result, as interest in marine pollution prevention has increased recently, interest in actuators that do not use hydraulic pressure is also increasing. Therefore, in this study, we intend to develop a davit with an electric cylinder type actuator that uses electricity rather than hydraulic pressure by the SOLAS regulation. In other words, the conceptual design of the davit driven through the linear motion of the ball screw using electricity is performed, and the structural safety of the drive is also reviewed so that it can be utilized in the industrial field.
Heavy metals, widely present in the environment, have become significant pollutants due to their excessive use in industries and technology. Their non-degradable nature poses a persistent environmental problem, leading to potential acute or chronic poisoning from prolonged exposure. Recent research has focused on separating heavy metals, particularly from industrial and mining sources. Industries such as metal plating, mining operations, tanning, wood and chipboard production, industrial paint and textile manufacturing, as well as oil refining, are major contributors of heavy metals in water sources. Therefore, removing heavy metals from water is crucial, especially for safe water supply in swimming and water sports. Iron oxide nanoparticles have proven to be highly effective adsorbents for water contaminants, and efforts have been made to enhance their efficiency and absorption capabilities through surface modifications. Nanoparticles synthesized using plant extracts can effectively bind with heavy metal ions by modifying the nanoparticle surface with plant components, thereby increasing the efficiency of heavy metal removal. This study focuses on removing lead from industrial wastewater using environmentally friendly, cost-effective iron nanoparticles synthesized with Genovese basil extract. The synthesis of nanoparticles is confirmed through analysis using Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction, validating their spherical shape and nanometer-scale dimensions. The method used in this study has a low detection limit of 0.031 ppm for measuring lead concentration, making it suitable for ensuring water safety in swimming and water sports.
As the natural flows in rivers dramatically decrease during drought season in Korea, a deterioration of river water quality is accelerated. Thus, consideration of downstream water quality responding to changes in reservoir release is essential for an integrated watershed management with regards to water quantity and quality. In this study, water quality models based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) method were developed using historical downstream water quality (rm $\NH_3$-N) data obtained from a water treatment plant in Geum river and reservoir release data from Daechung dam. A nonlinear multiple regression model was developed and compared with the ANN models. In the models, the rm NH$_3$-N concentration for next time step is dependent on dam outflow, river water quality data such as pH, alkalinity, temperature, and rm $\NH_3$-N of previous time step. The model parameters were estimated using monthly data from Jan. 1993 to Dec. 1998, then another set of monthly data between Jan. 1999 and Dec. 2000 were used for verification. The predictive performance of the models was evaluated by comparing the statistical characteristics of predicted data with those of observed data. According to the results, the ANN models showed a better performance than the regression model in the applied cases.

Power interruption is a phenomenon that no voltage is displayed over a short time or long time. Most devices will not operate normally when the supply voltage is low or does not exist. However, the device can also be operated with a different power which is ensured by a separate power generation. Recently, power interruption has been reduced gradually by the improvement of electricity quality, its duration also has been very short. Induction motors are widely used for the pumping in the water and sewage facilities and power plant applications. The pump is used as a machine for moving the fluid in the high place from a low location. So pump equipment always have a potential energy. If a momentary interruption occurs, the potential energy of the pump is reversed as that of water turbine and motor is operated as generator. This study is an analysis for the voltage variation, current, torque and power flow by the generating operation of the induction motor before and after the change of momentary interruption.
In the core of the nuclear power plant of PWR, several cases of fuel failure by unknown causes have been experienced for various fuel types. From the common features of the failure pattern, failure lead time, flow conditions, and flow induced vibration characteristics in nuclear fuel bundles, it is deduced that the fretting wear failure of the fuel rod at the spacer grid position is due to the fluidelastic vibration. In the past, fluidelastic vibration was simulated by quasi -static semi-analytical model, so called the static model, which could not account for the interaction between the rods within a bundle. To overcome this defect and to provide for more flexibilities applicable to the fuel bundle, Tanaka's unsteady model was modified to accomodate the geometrical differences and governing parameter changes during the operations such as the number of rods, pitch to diameter ratio (P/D), spring force, damping coefficient, etc. The critical velocity was calculated by solving the governing equations with the MATLAB code. A comparison between the estimated critical velocity and the test result shows a good agreement. Finally, the level of decrease of the critical velocity due to the reduction in the spring force and reduced damping coefficient due to the radiation exposure is also estimated.
An analysis model is developed using a commercial software 'simulationX' for designing hydraulic-pneumatic system of heave compensator for offshore drilling operations. Reliability verification of the analysis model for the test equipment of 1/5 scale compensator was conducted by comparing test results and simulation results. An analysis of full scale heave compensator is developed on the basis of verified a model. Then, the results of simulation were analyzed to obtain following conclusion. The displacement of crown block about excitation input amplitude (${\pm}3,000mm$) of the steward platform using a 'simulationX' is attenuated under ${\pm}35mm$, and the compensation rate is 98.7%. In this study, goal of a compensation rate is more than 95%. The previously results are satisfied with the objectives of compensation rate.
