  • The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita caused a serious damage to many plants. The phenolic components of the leaves of Schinus terebinthifolius were investigated as potential nematicidal agents for M. incognita. Nine compounds were isolated and characterized as viz., 1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloyl glucose (1), kaempferol-3-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnoside (Afzelin) (2), quercetin-3-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnoside (Quercetrin) (3), myricetin (4), myricetin-3-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnoside (Myricetrin) (5), methylgallate (6), protocatechuic acid (7), quercetin (8), and gallic acid (9) using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Compound 1 showed pronounced nematicidal activity compared to Oxamyl as a positive control. It showed the lowest eggs-hatchability (34%) and the highest mortality in nematode population (21% after 72 hours of treatment) at a concentration of $200{\mu}g/mL$. It exhibited the best suppressed total nematode population, root galling and number of eggmasses in infected tomato plants. The total carbohydrates and proteins were also significantly induced by 1 with reduction in total phenolics and increase in defense-related proteins. Thus, compound 1 could be a promising, more safe and effective natural nematicidal agent for the control of root-knot nematodes.

  • Five phenylpropanoids (1-5), a benzofuran neolignan (6), two 8-O-4'-neolignans (7-8), and five tetrahydrofuran lignans (9-13) were isolated from a methanol extract of Myristica fragrans seeds. The structures of 1-13 were determined by $^1H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopic data analyses and a comparison with the literature data. Compound 3 was isolated for the first time from this plant. All the isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against tyrosinase. Among them, safrole (1) showed significant inhibitions against both the monophenolase ($IC_{50}=32.11{\mu}M$) and diphenolase ($IC_{50}=27.32{\mu}M$) activities of tyrosinase. The kinetic analysis shows that safrole (1) is competitive inhibitors for both monophenolase and diphenolase. The apparent inhibition constant ($K_i$) for safrole (1) binding with free enzyme was determined to be 16.05 and $13.66{\mu}M$ for monophenolase and diphenolase, respectively.

  • Big data analytics and AI play a critical role in the development of smart plants. This study presents a big data platform for plant data and an 'AutoML platform' for AI-based plant O&M(Operation and Maintenance). The big data platform collects, processes and stores large volumes of data generated in plants using Hadoop, Spark, and Kafka. The AutoML platform is a machine learning automation system aimed at constructing predictive models for equipment prognostics and process optimization in plants. The developed platforms configures a data pipeline considering compatibility with existing plant OISs(Operation Information Systems) and employs a web-based GUI to enhance both accessibility and convenience for users. Also, it has functions to load user-customizable modules into data processing and learning algorithms, which increases process flexibility. This paper demonstrates the operation of the platforms for a specific process of an oil company in Korea and presents an example of an effective data utilization platform for smart plants.

  • The thickness and chemical composition of oxides on heat recovery steam generator tubes of combined cycle power plant were examined in order to evaluate the corrosion of the tubes. Tubes were removed from the plant after actual operations for 21,482, 42,552 and 56,123 hours respectively. Thickness and growth rate of the oxide scale on reheater inner tube (SA213-T22) were very high compared to those other tubes. The oxide scale was about $250{\mu}m$ thick and uniform. The components of the scale were iron oxides. The oxide scale was mixed oxides consisting of magnetite$(Fe_3O_4)$ and hematite$(Fe_2O_3)$. The oxide on inner tube was removed using many kinds of chemicals and it was found that chelating agents were dissolved faster than other chemicals.

  • The long wave infrared which is ranged to 4~1, 000 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ is a kind of electromagnetic wave, and the wave is being absorbed by higher plant easily. The absorbed wave in the plant promotes the metabolism of plant cell by way of resonance with the water molecules of plant cell. This experiment was carried out to determine the effect of long wave infrared radiation ceramic on growth of rice seedling, and to make the optimum mixture rate of ceramic powder when ceramics was mixed with bed soil at 4, 8, 12, 16% levels for machine transplanting. The results of this study indicate that the growth of the seedling significantly higher in the treatment sites than that of control sites. However, there was no significant differences in dry matter weight between the treatment and control sites. At the 9.6% mixing ratio, the highest growth of rice seedling was found.

  • The $\alpha$-FeOOH powders were prepared by allkaline and acidic method on the small scale plant from the waste pickling liquor of iron. $\alpha$-FeOOH, $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ and ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$ powders were examined by TEM, SEM, TG-DTA, X-ray diffraction, VSM and chemical analysis. The results obtained from the experiment could be summerized as follows : the reaction time for the preparation of $\alpha$-FeOOH was observed to be smaller in the case of alkaline method and the products was acicular with the size of about $0.5\mu\textrm{m}$. The color of $\alpha-FeOOH and $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$was lovely yellow and red, respectively. The magnetic properties of $Fe_3O_4$ obtained by the reduction of $\alpha-Fe_2O_3$in the $H_2$ atomosphere at $370^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour showed 367(Oe) and 82.7(emu/g).

  • An unrecorded cactus species, Opuntia monacantha Haw. (Cactaceae), is newly reported in Korea. It was found growing on the coast of Jeju Island. It is distinguished from other Opuntia species by the following morphological characteristics. It is an erect succulent tree, commonly 2~3 m, but can reach 4 m. It is highly branched at the top and has drooping upper branches. The cladodes are oval to obovate, narrowing basally, and glossy green. It has yellow outer tepals with a reddish median stripe on the back. It produces purple fruit with yellowish green juicy pulp, which contains several rudimentary seeds and very few mature seeds (<2). The Korean name "Wang-seon-in-jang" is given to the species, based on the height of the plants and the large cladodes.

  • We applied a commercially available computational fluid dynamics model, FLOW-3D, to design a settling basin inlet structure for the intended O sewage plant. In addition, we analyzed the extent to which the inlet sewage water was distributed as a result, firstly, of the location and width of a submerged baffle wall and, secondly, of the opening ratio of a baffle wall with opening holes. The application results show that the flow is unstable due to the generation of eddies in both sides of the submerged baffle wall when the submerged baffle wall is located close to the inlet. The eddies and subsequent instability also occur when the submerged baffle wall is located close to the baffle wall with opening holes. Moreover, the discharge that passes through the midsection of the settling basin increases as the width of the submerged baffle wall increases. At the O sewage plant, when the submerged baffle wall with a width of 2.4 m was located 2 m from the inlet structure and the opening ratio of the baffle wall was 7 percent, the most satisfactory distribution of the inlet sewage water occurred at the entrance of the settling basin.
